Trumpeter 1960 Pontiac Bonneville
Sidney Schwartz replied to Sidney Schwartz's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I hear ya'. I bought this kit quite a while ago and have held off doing it for the same reason. I'll be dealing with a couple of those micro parts as I tackle the dashboard, which I'm starting now. I think one of them is the cigarette lighter. ? -

Thanks! What did you find disappointing about the engine? I'm not knowledgeable enough about real cars to be able to tell if a kit is realistic or not, at least most of the time. -

Interesting. This has just the one set. Did you build yours yet? -
I've never done a work in progress post before. I don't do much in the way of customizing, so I hope this won't be too boring. This seems to be a unique kit. Trumpeter makes mostly military models. This is one of very few car models they made, and it seems to be no longer in production. Guess I lucked out when I found one. It's the most detailed and well made kit I've seen so far...very classy. There's are photo etched hinges that have to be folded and assembled...I'll probably mess those up. ? Here are all the parts... Very well organized. Every part's location is shown in the instructions... Excellent instructions. Very clear... Yow! check out the microscopic parts. These will be "fun". All parts have been cleaned and primered...we're ready to go. There are 29 parts just for the engine. Sorted by color for painting... Engine is done and I'm happy with it. I was able to drill and wire the distributor that came with the kit. Next up will be the dashboard. I won't be able to do much beyond that until the paint I ordered arrives. Body will be metallic orange, interior two-tone red. Thanks for looking. ?

Alternatives to bare metal foil
Sidney Schwartz replied to khier's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I tried the Hasegawa gold mirror finish for the emblems and lettering on a body. It was awful. Way too thick for the details to show through. Waste of money. ☹️ Ended up using a gold fine point marker instead. -
Is there a method that will allow me to match the powder color to the interior paint color? Or is it just a matter of being lucky and finding powder and paint that already match?

Alternatives to bare metal foil

It shouldn't be. You might try contacting the vendor and telling them you got a defective sheet and ask them to replace it. -
Thanks all for the info. I've seen embossing powder but didn't know what it was for. I'll try some. Nice work, Steven! ?

Good question. What are the differences?

What are good sources for flocking? Thanks.

Just a perfect stock Ford, you mean! ???

I'm really pleased with how this came out. I was intending it to be green and ivory. The ivory paint turned out to be more of a yellow, but I decided to keep it. This is a really exceptional kit. Very detailed, lots of parts (some really tiny), and superb parts fit. You can tell a lot of thought went into the design...pretty much every part is keyed to where it fits so that it's nearly impossible to put it together wrong. Naturally it would not be a Sidney build if I didn't lose at least one part...in this case the VW logo that goes on the hood. I'm planning on getting another one of these sometime and painting it in ladybug colors...red with big black polka dots. The wife will love it. ? Thanks for looking.

Simply awesome! Such nice builds! ??? Where do you buy your flocking? I'm having trouble finding a good source.

Thanks, everyone!

Another nice one! What are you using to do your detailing, like the lettering on the hood? That's something I need to be better at.

Ditto.

Just ordered one from Amazon. Now I have to put myself in a deep meditative state and contemplate colors.... ?
-
Love your videos, Michelle...you are very creative. I'm putting this one on my list to buy.

Thanks, all. I wish I could afford to buy another one of these, but that would blow my model budget for the month. ?

Wow...that's just about perfect! Beautiful!

Handy BMF trick
Sidney Schwartz replied to Sidney Schwartz's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The problem for me is that I have difficulty handling very thin strips of foil. Heck, I have difficulty handling foil, period. -
I'm drooling. Just beautiful. ?

It's Camaro-palooza here. Another beautiful build!

I lucked out with this one, mostly. It's a rare one and they go for $100+. Got this one for $40. The box looks like someone played soccer with it, but the actual kit was in almost perfect condition. The rear bumper has a piece missing...I couldn't figure out how to fix it so I didn't try. The windshield frame was in three pieces...I did the best I could with that. Other than that, nothing broke or missing. I couldn't find a copyright anywhere, but I'm guessing it was made in the early 60's. This is actually an excellent kit, with very good detail and parts fit. You can just make out the metal springs in the suspension. It's a real shame they don't make these anymore...these beautiful molds are gathering dust somewhere, or worse. Body is Tamiya Silver Leaf under Krylon Crystal Clear, interior is Tamyia Mica Red, BMF for chrome, dash gauges by BestModelCarParts, distributor/wires from Morgan Automotive Detail. Thanks for looking. ?️
