Let's See Some Survivors!
redneckrigger replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
These all date from the mid to late 70's. I used to be one who would try to replicate a 1:1 car. The brown GTO was my kid brothers, the '66 GTO a friend I worked with, the AMX my wife's cousin's, and the rest just builds of cars I had seen. They are still with me after three moves and all these years, and after a change of interest to heavy trucks. -

From RC Toy to Lowboy Load

ROPS is the Roll Over Protection System, or the rollbar over the top of the cab. I don't blame night shift for me.....................it is a severe case of CRS...........(Can't Remember Stuff.......polite version)! -
THAT is a superb question! This is SUPPOSED to be Mack code 804 green. Back when I used to paint 1:1 trucks, we had an R600 and a DM600 steel nose of that color in our fleet. Every time I got paint for them, it was a SLIGHTLY different shade. Seems that this color has MANY different offsets to it, and is about impossible to match, at least in my experience. In fact when I bought the paint for this build, my local paint shop couldn't even find the code. SO.............I found a color chip, and matched it to the closest of my ability to an available paint. My paint supplier is a PPG shop, and I use acrylic enamels. This green is actually a GM code, number 3255, PPG Shop Line Enamels. I still have all of my old codes, but apparently, those formulas are less and less available in enamels today. Since I left the 1:1 painting world back in 1998, most of my old codes are not good any more, so now it is just look WAY WAY WAY back into my memory to remember the color and try to match to an existing chip!

1984 GMC update 4/10
redneckrigger replied to k100's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Looking VERY nice! Had an '85 GMC K3500 Sierra Classic big block with the single rear wheels that I bought new and beat to death. Had great dreams to redo it, and I got as far as gathering all new OEM sheet metal fenders, doors, hood, complete box, even a new cab, wheels, tires, lift kit, a crate 502, new interior and LOADS of other bits and pieces. But, I just ran out of steam and sadly, sold it when I moved. BUT, your build is getting me to start gathering pieces again, although in 1/25th scale! Takes up a lot less room too! Keep the photos coming! Thanks for the incentive! GREAT WORK!!! -

Yeah, the ROPS is all wrong, am modifying that. And yeah, some other things look too big etc., but it will serve the purpose. Didn't want to get into another involved rebuild, so it was a Q&D..............Quick & Dirty. I SHOULD have sectioned the top of the cab to extend it higher to enlarge it, but I chose the lazy way by simply extending the bottom of the cab/tank unit. Looks just a bit out but it'll work. I'll call it a 50 footer.................looks like the real D6T from 50 feet away! -
Nice KW!!!!!! Good work!

Well, after spending a year plus on the CO4090A, I had to do an easy one, so I spent a couple days on the D6 shown elsewhere in this forum. So, now it's on to a little more involved one. This is an original MPC DM600 that I started almost 30 years ago. I used the Montone body from the Autocar kit, and figured on using the Tip Turbine engine from a Cruiseliner. I made my own pusher axle but am now going to use an aftermarket one. I also had narrowed the track between the rears. The interior is the steel dash one that I painted tan. The rebuild will see it painted 804 Mack Green and the frame will be red. I probably won't get carried away like I did with the IHC but time will tell!

Years ago I found this New Bright remote control bulldozer at a tag sale for 25 cents. New Bright did a bunch of large scale RC toys, a Cat 245, 992, 777, D9L, but this one is a small scale D9, which measures about 7 inches long without the ripper. I scaled it out, and it pretty closely resembles a 1/25th scale Cat D6T. So, even though it isn't technically a kit, and I really didn't go for perfect prototypical details, here is a quick rebuild of this toy to a passable lowboy load. I painted the tracks steel, raised the cab about 1/2", plugged a few holes where the RC mechanisms were, made some engine covers to hide the low detail engine, (didn't feel like replicating that), added some upper track idlers, and painted it Cat Yellow. I am not totally fond of the ROPS that came with it, so am doing that over as shown. Then I will decal it an call it done. Not a high detail build, and not perfect to the 1:1, but, as a quick build, and one that passes muster for ME, it works!

Automotive (and other) toys from our childhood
redneckrigger replied to Harry P.'s topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
My first automotive toys were Matchbox cars.........................had hundreds of them, all disappeared somewhere along the way. Also got into collecting Roco & Roskopf Minitanks at an early age, back in the early '60s. Those somehow stayed with me until just last year when I finally had to admit they were just too small for me to see! They are 1/87th scale, shown here is just one of about 50 boxes of them. So, I sold off all 2500 of them! Got a pretty penny for them, and promptly bought more 1/25th truck kits! -

On first look, I asked myself "WHY?"...................but then as soon as I looked at it again, I said "Why NOT!!!!". That has to be one of the most, if not THE most imaginative truck build I can remember seeing. The whole concept screams ABSOLUTELY POSSIBLE! Add to the fact that I have had a soft spot for cabovers and those cute/ugly Dodge trucks for my whole life. One of my first sets of wheels was a '68 Dodge van used for my parent's business and I put LOTS of miles on her. I can only wish to have 1% of your imagination and skill! Truly awesome! Now for a chopped Dodge C-1000 hauler with aero effects.....in orange, of course.........! -
Just put the finishing touches on the 'Binder. A fellow builder generously made these decals for me and did a superb job. I was unable to find someone to make custom decals and he stepped forward and volunteered. I have sent a few parts out to other members when they were in search of them. I never expected to be on the receiving end of such generosity. Many thanks! Paying it forward DOES work!

Very nice build.......and a cabover to boot! Nothing but the best!!!! -
I LOVE the info on the scribed method............works VERY well! ALSO, for those looking for the prototypical results of copying a 1:1 example, remember to check out the REAL 1:1 vehicle for where all the panel join lines are. MANY plastic kits do not include all of the panel lines. A perfect example is the AMT R600 Mack truck and the Ertl/MPC DM600 and DM800 kits. Those kit cabs do not show the panel lines on the cab as they are perfectly smooth where the seams should be, as if they were all filled in with bondo. Check out a 1:1 version and see them on the drivers side in front of the door; on the rocker panels; or on the cowl beneath the windshield. Those lines are where the individual panels are joined to make the cab. They are a VERY obvious part of the 1:1 truck, and should be added to the scale model. Just a pointer, but one VERY easily done with the scribing method.
