Brings back great memories................back when I was a teen, a LONG time ago, the local K Marts had a close out of the Tyco sets right after Christmas. I bought every one my allowance and meager earnings could afford. I had a set up in the basement that had over 200 feet of track on about four levels. It was a nightmare keeping power to it, but when it ran right it was a BLAST. Had both Tyco and A/FX cars running on it............loads of fun. Grew up, got married, and the old track hit the landfill..............sad indeed!

Yeah, I figure it about the same way. I worked on a farm when I was a kid, and drove B Models, old Ford F series, IHC R Models, and even an old Reo Speedwagon around doing chores. They sure made an impression on me as well. Then I worked at a construction company that ran lots of R Model Macks and one old B81 quad box. That was sure a challenge to drive, (would have been easier if you had three arms!). Had a bunch of Detroit powered stuff, both trucks and equipment. I think that was where I fell in love with their screams. Are the new ProStar type trucks nice? Sure...................but not for me. -

IHC Transtar CO-4090A WIP

I found the conversion kit on eBay a few years ago, and couldn't resist it. I put it into my "to do" pile, and finally decided what "to do" with it! The 4090's were not very common at all. I actually saw one very close to me about a year and a half ago, and stopped to check it out. The poor thing was under about 8 feet of snow, but it was unmistakable as to what it was. After the snow melted, I went back to see it again, and found out that it had been sent to the scrapper.................about brought tears to my eyes! I talked to the guy who had it, and I guess it was a basket case, repowered with a 6-71N, (which was toast with a hole in the block and a rod peeking out), automatic trans, and fire gutted interior. So, he had dragged it home as parts for a 4070A that he had, took what he wanted, got it buried in snow, then scrapped it as soon as the snow melted. Still a crying shame. BUT, it kind of made up my mind to build the kit I had, and since I LOVE cabovers, (REALLY!!!), I figured it would make a unique model, as a heavy haul COE. Anyways, ANYTHING with a Detroit can't be half bad, right??? I absolutely loved driving the Detroits that I had over the years. Slam your thumb in the door when getting into them first thing in the morning, and drive 'em like you're PO'D at them, and they will run just fine! Absolutely unmistakable sound too...........simply wonderful. -

Love your project!!! -
Another of my "works in progress". I seem to have far more WIP's than completed ones, but that is probably because my attention span is so short it only has one end! This is a kit bash from the AMT lowboy into a single axle lowboy from many years ago. It at least has gotten painted, and needs all of the detailing yet, but it is getting closer than I am used to seeing! As with most of my builds, I strive for the appearance of the total package, and not in specific prototypical details......but I enjoy my results! I need to thank gatorincebu for introducing me to this forum......it is AWESOME, and I sincerely owe him my thanks! Tom

This is a project that I have been working on for a long time. It is an IHC Transtar CO-4090A with the 12V71 engine. I added twin turbos to the engine to make it a 12V71TT. A pusher axle, a 4090 conversion cab, a bunch of bits and pieces from other kits and some Mark Savage rear tires, and still needing a LOT of detailing, such as weld beads, raising the headache rack to match the raised cab height, piping, hoses, and LOTS more miscellaneous details, and maybe some day it MAY reach somewhere near completion. But for now, it is fun to screw around with. The winch arrangement has been changed three times in the last 6 months. Someday, it may actually be what I want! Sure, you seldom see this type of truck as a COE, but, since I LOVE COE's, (and ANYTHING Detroit Diesel), this is where it starts!

I used to have a short nosed 9500 with a 22 foot roll back body on it for my towing company. That old girl was a screamer with the Detroit in it. LOVED that truck, and it brings tears to me eyes whenever I think of the day I let her go for sale. I could shift that old girl faster than my GTO, and you HAD to be able to whenever you got near a hill, but boy oh boy, on the flats............FUN!

Possible project?

That can make a VERY cool build! I was a Fire Chief of a department that had an old corn binder like that one. It hauled a 1000 gallon tank. Kind of overloaded, but made a very neat looking unit. Alas, we replaced it with a newer Ford LN series truck, and the old girl went off to the scrapper. Crying shame, as it also had under 10K miles. -

Missed one of those in an old GMC oil truck at an auction a few years back. The one you built looks MUCH nicer! Great work! -

Love it....................always liked the cabover 'Binders. My current project is a CO-4090A with the V12 Detroit. It has been in progress for quite some time, as I simply cannot build anything out of the box, and have already changed it 7 or 8 times from the original plan. But, it is starting to come together. -
Years ago, when I used to own a body shop and we used to paint ANYTHING, including heavy equipment, much of it was yellow, such as Cat, Case, Dresser, JD etc. Then, somewhere along the line, the paint makers were mandated by the EPA to reduce the lead in paint. POOF, there went the opacity in many paints, but especially yellow. We used to be able to paint Cat yellow over black primer, and it covered in no more than two coats. But when it went lead free, it all became transparent. So, we started using Dupont Vari-Prime as a base coat for the yellow jobs. It worked quite well and covered better than a gray primer base. I have also used tintable primers, but my memory doesn't remember what brand. PPG also made a DP epoxy primer in yellow. I also used to have an endless supply of paints for my models, as I used everything that the real 1:1 jobs did. But, those days are gone. So, I now use Mr. Surfacer 1200 or 1500 as a base, followed by any Model Master flat yellow, such as Dunkelgelb. Then the yellow top coat, applied in thin coats as even then, it must be built up. Progress is NOT such a good thing!
