Out for a Cruise
Lizard Racing replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What a great story! KEEP THE CAR!!! If you unload it with all the sentimental value, you will always regret it. -
1963 Corvette Grand Sport (update 8/16/16)
Lizard Racing replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I recently read an interview with George Barris before he died. He said a lot of '63 owners came to him to remove the rear window divider. He said he kept all the removed pieces! I bet those owners could kick themselves in later years. -
Indy 500
Lizard Racing replied to Lizard Racing's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't mean to be a pain, but since I have no life, I kept all my Sports Car Graphic magazines from the 60's. On page 16-17 of the August 1964 issue is the annual Firestone two-page ad about their victory in the Indy 500. Included is a Quote from Foyt: "Firestone tires did a tremendous job. I went all the way without a tire change." Winning any Indy 500 (no matter how) is a lifetime achievement. I was just reading profiles of the winners in this year's program and was amazed at the number of winners who perished in racing accidents. Some even the same year. -
I already have your site bookmarked. I will now have to shop more online as our LHS is closing. Drat!

1963 Corvette Grand Sport (update 8/16/16)
Lizard Racing replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Great start to a great car! VRM does make good decals. I always was intrigued with the sideways mounting of the brake master cylinder. A novel way to make room for the glorious engine. -
A 69 440 Six-Pack was one of the baddest of the bad muscle cars. Not necessarily the fastest, but the toughest to take off without spinning the rear wheels. Your model is a worthy representation.

Indy 500
Lizard Racing replied to Lizard Racing's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Foyt won in '64 on a single set of tires. Before that in the 30's, a Cummins diesel made the 500 miles nonstop. Memory fails me on further details without looking it up. -
To repeat above: just freakin' amazing! Amazing job on the model as well as the photography. I'm not really a Ford fan, but I am a fan of a tremendous work of art.

Empty kit boxes?
Lizard Racing replied to 68shortfleet's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had some originals dating back to the '60s that I used for parts. Then I found out they were worth money. I gave them to my son as part of his inheritance. -
I didn't see anything wrong with the "far from Perfect." A very good job on a classic racecar.

Don't throw it away, you might need it someday. When emptying out my deceased parents' house, I found some spray paint from when I was in school, 35 years earlier. And they took it with them when they moved.

Indy 500

EdselDan: try going to indycar.com. They have a highlights video. The definition of winner is the one who reaches the finish line first. No matter how it's done. I have seen a lot of 500s that were won in the last 10 laps. Indycar is probably the most competitive series going right now. -
A favorite car driven by a favorite driver. Everybody watch Rush!

A lot of people are saying Alexander Rossi did not deserve his win in the 500. He kept out of trouble, conserved his fuel and took a late-race gamble. He also turned the fastest race lap on 106. Since Indy Car racing as become a spec-car series, the only advantage someone has is in strategy. When there are 17 cars still on the lead lap at the end, and one second covered the first 10 qualifiers, that's competitive.

Strangest Thing On Your Workbench?
Lizard Racing replied to Vande's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Unless someone has a dinosoaur, that has to be the strangest. My herpitologist daughter would not approve of killing the snake, as they do occupy an ecological niche (as opposed to mosquitos and fire ants). You're doing the right thing contacting reptile rescue. Is the cat OK? -
Just got the Surfite ensemble done. It was supposed to be an OOB build, but I couldn't leave it alone. Added headlights, flame decals and a grab bar at the rear of the roof. Ed "Big Daddy" Roth was a genius car maker and T-shirt painter.

1975 Gremlin and Pepsi Chevelle. There is a 2000 Corvette C5R Daytona winner. -

1972 Dodge Charger 1/1 Copy update 05/11/16
Lizard Racing replied to 72 Charger's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This was one of the best-looking cars Chrysler ever made. I just started on a replica of a 74 Gremlin we had. Good luck on the details. -

Oval track-non-NASCAR?
Lizard Racing replied to Joel Naprstek's topic in Other Racing: Road Racing, Salt Flat Racers
This is one I built some time ago. A Kurtis-Offy midget driven by Johnny Tolan that won the 1947 Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association championship. -
1963 Corvette Grand Sport (update 8/16/16)
Lizard Racing replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
According to Chevrolet Grand Sport, page 17: "... and Design chief Bill Mitchell's prized split rear window divider was let go too-in the interest of weight savings as well as visibility." I would be glad to share any other info from the book if anyone needs it. An excellent reference. -
I had the same problem with mine. I ended up removing the excess wheel backing, sanding the inside of the fender and cutting off the excess length of the axle. The tire now rubs on the rear spring, but at least it now fits. Hope this helps.
