Great detail. If I didn't know better, I would say it was a 1:1 car. Like those x-frame Chevys.

For your first project, I would recommend a snap kit with skill level 1. This will familiarize you with instructions and how a model goes together. If that goes together well, move on to a glue kit with level 1 or 2. I agree with Mr.CFMgarage, build for your own enjoyment. Many of the models displayed on this forum are way beyond my skill level, so don't get discouraged. Welcome to our hobby. I must warn you that it can become compulsive. It's an exercise in patience.

I've built a ton of '63s since '63, but they didn't look as good as this one.

Jim Reed was a New York Yankee in NASCAR-land. This car won the Southern 500 and two other races in 1959. I was a bit disappointed in the Yesterday's Decals not being entirely correct and complete. But they look good anyway.

51 Chevy - a rod with some history - update 4/6
Lizard Racing replied to Jantrix's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Great art! This project addresses a little known (or little admitted) aspect of the car hobby. This would make a great diorama. -
1970 Le Mans Movie
Lizard Racing replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It was the "street" version of the GT 40. Obviously driven by some guy with more money than brains; driving a car like that to Le Mans to be seen, only to park it in a public field. -
Great detailing! This engine would look good in about anything.

Thanks to jjsipes for inspiring me to convert my generic Black Widow into the Buck Baker 1957 NASCAR champion. I'm not much of a fan of current NASCAR but I find myself building a lot of older cars. I still have a Marshall Teague '53 Hudson and a Cale Yarbrough '76 Chevy and a Jim Reed '59 Chevy to do.

I'm doing a Jim Reed '59 Chevy that won the Southern 500 and three other races in 1959. Here is the interior. I used parts of the Plastic Performance Parts roll cage and scratch-built the front bars to be more period correct. There was a fit problem with the body and the larger PPH wheels and tires. If you are doing a '59 and using alternate wheels, be sure to check prior to painting. I damaged the paint with all the handling from the fit checks. I learned to drive in a '59 and have a real appreciation on how complicated the body contours and trim parts are.

1963 Corvette Grand Sport (update 8/16/16)
Lizard Racing replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Good work! I built the Delmo Johnson (Sebring #3) version. But I am going to convert it to the Jim Hall/Roger Penske version. This car actually won a major race (Nassau '64). For anyone interested in GS Corvettes, I would recommend the book Corvette Grand Sport by Lowell Paddock and Dave Friedman. -
Mix and Match
Lizard Racing replied to Eloveless's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mr. Ace: What an ecclectic build! I recognize parts from a number of cars. Really cool looking. -
Mix and Match
Lizard Racing replied to Eloveless's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Remember, this is a HOBBY. Build the models you want, regardless of what others may say. Mixing parts is perfectly OK if that's what you want. I do race cars exclusively, but some custom combinations sound interesting. -
Mr. Misha: The roof stripes are painted. I knew there was no way I was going to get a decal to lay flat on that curve. I photocopied the decal and used it as a template for the stripes. The rest of the decals are from the kit. One complaint: The gold colored decals (Doug's Headers and National record Holder) pretty much faded away on application. I used the 766 number from the kit, intended for the white car. I didn't like the original number. Thanks to everyone for the gracious comments.

This is the '66 Bill Jenkins Chevy Nova. This car was equipped with the small block 350 hp 327. Weighing 800 lbs less, he whipped up on many Hemis and other more powerful cars. I remember reading about this car back in the day. I've never built a stocker before. It was really different leaving the interior stock for a change.

Looks just like the pictures.

Local Hobby Shp vs. Mega-Store
Lizard Racing replied to CometMan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was fortunate when living in Georgia to have a LARGE Hobbytown USA fairly close by. It was made from a three-screen theater, so they had a lot of stuff. Then I moved to Utah last summer, but was pleased to find a small HTUSA a few blocks away. I like to support local businesses whenever possible. I do go online to find aftermarket parts like wheels and tires. There are so many resources available today than when i first started in the hobby. -
about how many models have you
Lizard Racing replied to bubbaman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've been building off and on for over 50 years. Moves and other circumstances required giving away previous work (except for a few gems). In the current crop, I have 16 built and another 10 in work or in the stash. Advice from Mr. Jantrix is good. Go slow, have fun and do a good job. -
Really, should Ferraris be anything but red?
