What a great find! I had a rust bucket version of this very model, very similarly if not identically equipped. When I had to replace the engine I pulled the slant six out of my totaled ‘61 Dodge. It must have been one with aluminum internals as it gave the car plenty of pep! It would beat a friend’s 350 T-Bird off the line and stay ahead until about 35 mph. I always wanted to put a 4bbl carb on it but never had the opportunity before I had to give it up. It was a fun little car and I would jump at the chance to own this one you found or one like it in its condition. Good luck on acquiring it. I found a few pics of mine…

Glad to see this thread. I have been working off and on on a ‘61 wagon (Modelhaus) for decades now, not being able to bring myself to shave the Polara chrome trim off the body to create a Dart Senaca. I finally this last fall modified the seats and I then discovered and purchased a Time Machine Resins Polara wagon on eBay. I am now mixing and matching the parts of the two kits and hope to eventually come up with both a Dart and a Polara version. I tried using the ‘64 Dodge chassis but it wouldn’t work with the wagon interior tub, otherwise it is an almost perfect fit. I will, however, be able to use the ‘64 K member with the resin chassis. I have been trying to figure a way to blend the inner fenders of the 2 kits for a more accurate look and looks like you have the solution. Although it would be inaccurate, it looks like the firewall and inner fenders of the ’64 would also be a perfect fit with little if any modification. (I’m so tempted to do one like that!) I have also mated a ‘41 Plymouth manual three speed transmission to the ‘64’s slant 6 (although I don’t know how period correct that is) and chiseled the 2nd exhaust pipe off the chassis (for the Dart. The Polara will run the 383 w/dual exhaust.) Your ’61 seems to be moving right along and looking good!

I have found scripts on photo etched offerings for specific kits. I acquired a PE tree for the ‘58 Edsel that included scripts for a wagon version as I have a resin Edsel wagon trans kit. I have yet to begin that project and I have no experience working with PE parts so I can’t say this would be a good solution. The resin and 3d may offer a little more realistic detail than just a flat metal piece.

Me too! My folks bought a Polara w/police option, 383 4bbl new in December 1960, when I was 8. I was always enthralled with the taillights/rear quarter panel design (they are different than the Dart). I learned to drive in it (as well as a ’57 Chrysler 300C conv!). I bought a ‘61 Dart wagon (with the same Polara rear qtrs) in the ‘80s that I loved, even though it was somewhat of a beater. Sadly it was totaled as it sat on a snowy street in front of my house. An out of control suv slid and t-boned it, dead center in the left door post and doors. Been hoping to find another ever since. I am currently, slowly, working at first on one, now two resin wagon kits. Still would like a real one! BTW this is one beauty of a model! Nothing to apologize there!

I always liked this kit. Built one when I was a kid, probably when this issue was current. Loved the turquoise green plastic! I eventually (when I was still a kid) painted the body panels different colors to represent junk yard replacements. I no longer have that model but I do have what I believe is the last issue with the unchopped top (though Directory of Model Car Kits lists it as the first chopped version). It’s unbuilt and molded in blue.

I have a Modelhaus’64 D100 Custom conversion kit. (Requires only chassis and bed to complete.) I don’t know if it’s the same as the Custom “Sports Special”. I would be willing to trade along with the Dodge lil Red Express Truck donor kit, if needed. . Don’t know what would be a fair trade but I’m looking for early JoHan, AMT and Revell MoPars thru ’65 and ‘65 Mustang coupe/convertible kit.

There was an “annual” of the ‘65 Barracuda with both a 426 Hemi and a rather crude slant six. It would be cool to have a new tool model with a 273 cid option! My sister’s first car was the ’65 with the 273.

Here’s a good place to try. He’s made me custom plates at a very reasonable price. (Btw I’m loving for more billboards like the one in the picture)

Making this into an auto hauler sounds intriguing! Hope to see it completed.

Yeah, kinda, sort of. Didn’t open the inner bags, but the trailer floor wasn’t bagged. I’m not sure how you envision your trailer so I took some pics of it and a partial mockup of the AMT 1/25 single car trailer for comparison. The 1/32 trailer measures 3” wide. The 1/25 trailer is 5” wide including the fenders, 3 5/8” wide without the fenders. Hope this helps. BTW “copyright 1980” Is imprinted on this piece

I got one of the trailers this week, too. I have never seen it either, but I too have a tractor in need of a trailer. Looks like a a nicely detailed kit…
