  1. This is like an archeology dig ... who built the clear body J ??
  2. Andretti and McLaren. ?? Those are two pretty good race car drivers ....
  3. Pleasant surprise in today’s mail ... Veloce’s Ford Small Block source book has a reprint of the 30 page Ford Motor Company publication on the 65 Ford Indy DOHC engine - page for page - very nice - I had pined about getting a copy of this pamphlet on this thread last year - it hasn’t been re-produced in some years - but Author Des Hammill found my cure ... book also has some good info on the hi performance engines used by Shelby ... so maybe I should complete that DOHC Indy engine ?? ??? ya think ?
  4. The camshaft housings were made from three strips of Evergreen liquid glued together to get the profile / Shape correct ... then added some .025 plastic pegs so I’ll get a solid attachment to the cyl head once the parts are painted ...
  5. If I spend my spare time building model cars and Going to baseball games that means I’m older than _______. ???
  6. If my postings start to spread out - it’s because I can finally go to some ball games. Yeah ... actually posting this on my I phone in the bottom of the 4th ... Canes are beating the Blue Devils ...
  7. The carbs will get some aluminum caps and horns. ... time to clean up the Sherline workbench ... maybe I’ll post a photo before the cleanup. Just for laughs ... the cyl head has plug holes drilled at angles - this was a duel plug / cylinder engine - the distributor sits in front of the engine - below the fuel pump and above the water pump ...
  8. The other side of the cyl head gets angled holes for the carbs... the Amal carb bodies are soldered up from 1/16 thin tube and some .078 tubing scrounged from the back of one of my STUFF drawers ... Next is some work on the cam housings ...
  9. Gracias. Saw several running together at the Barber track in Alabama a few years ago. Yes they are small and they sound like a huge swarm of ANGRY bees ...
  10. You’re markings on the body ... was the body too wide up front but scale at the rear ?! That’s a pain ...
  11. And the NACA ducts aren’t so easy - got to make two small ones on my Lotus ...
  12. Maybe not .... when Doug Nye did his great History of the Post War Grand Prix car Vol I - about 35 years ago - it included the factory drawings for the Vanwall space frame. Thank you Mr Nye! The current plan is to build a display chassis - as photographed / featured in the book’s chapter on the marque - actually I think that undressed chassis was once on display at the Collier Museum - now known as Rev’s - years ago - I was unable to photograph it then as the museum has always had strict photograph rules - no flash - not a problem today - with I phones - but back then - it was the “””one that got away “”. Anyway - this mite be the chassis for the Rev’s Collection Vanwall . Vanwall only built 5 or 6 .... - there is so much on these cars that I can do a nice job with what I’ve got - but boy would I have loved to have shot a roll of film on that chassis ... oh well ... and the Merit Vanwall kit may make a cameo in this project anyway ...
  13. How come nobody’s asked me where this engine is going .. ??
  14. On the right side of the cyl head I’ll make the combustion ports . This engine used Amal single throat carbs in an arrangement very similar to its Norton ancestor ... I mite cheat and use some kit sourced exhaust pipes from Fernando Pinto’s very good Vanwall kit. Not Sure - maybe ...
  15. The cyl head exhaust ports and flanges under construction ... evergreen strip and lots of liquid glue...
  16. 2 things to pay attn to while making the cyl head. The angle for the cam boxes - should be 60 degrees - and I drilled thru the head for the openings for the coolant tubes - so that I’ve got a pattern to use when I solder up the radiator manifold ...
  17. Yikes ... that photo of Autolite I with the parachute is wonderful ...
  18. ok. So far so good. Now on to the cylinder head ...
  19. “Growing” the engine block - from the display engine photos you’ll see that the block is topped with a row of cylinder castings - I couldn’t quite work out their exact dimensions - but I used .156 evergreen tube - which is 4 scale inches - and a height of .100 - 2&1/2 scale inches in height ... that’s close enough ... the rest is all done with lengths of Evergreen strip and bar and liquid glue ...
  20. Do not. - I repeat - do not take the measurements on my Drawing as gospel - these are somE guestimates - and changes were made as the engine parts are made...
  21. I took these photos over 30 years ago - at the recently shuttered Donington Museum - my one and only visit - the display engine has a story to tell - I think - the pumps and distributor are attached to the side of the engine block - they don’t belong there - unless this was used in the team’s rear engined prototype or the Lotus 18 / Vanwall experiment ... maybe it was - don’t know ... would love to know where this engine is now ...notice the hairpin springs poking out from the cylinder head - these are really hard to see once the engine is installed ... what a cool looking engine ...
  22. Evergreen makes some sheet that railroaders use to make boxcar siding. The HO size is handy for making engine parts that are ribbed - like the Vanwall sump - the ribs are deepened with a razor saw - and away we go ...
  23. The engine is a scratchbuilders dream - or nightmare ? We’ll see..
  24. DING DING. ... the photo is from a restorer’s website - I’m not adding the link because the site appears To have some virus issues at The current time [ don’t we all ]. Tony vandervell’s engine was a quirky mix of old and new. It featured Norton’s cyl head design - including those wonderful exposed valve hair springs - poking out under the valve covers.
  25. Nope. Not that one ... but it is British ....
