  1. I'm sure we've all done this. In your experience, what is the best way to repair that oops scratch when you over shot the door gap you were deepening? Putty doesnt seem to do well because its so shallow. A little CA?
  2. I attended a contest last year that did the same thing. As the club members wanted to participate ALL the voting was people choice. They handed out a ballot sheet with all the classes on it and it was fill in the blank. Seems like a great idea in theory. The downside is you are now being judged by many people who don't know squat about what work goes into building a model. A "judge" is generally familiar with most kits, and what work must have gone into acheiving the goal of any particular model. I passed a woman who was there with her husband who voted for a model because it was her favorite color. The best model there was a rather plain looking 57 Ford that the builder had converted from a hardtop to a base-model sedan. If you didn't know about the kit it would have been pretty easy to pass it by. But once you got looking at it and saw the effort it took to do the conversions, it was a shoe in for best of show. It was hardly noticed by most non-modelers. A real shame. How would you like to lose a contest by one vote, when someone voted for the other one because it matched her nail polish? Peoples choice is a two edged sword at best.
  3. There is no history that I could find on the history of Minilite wheels. I love them myself. Maybe an email to the company directly could straighten it out? I asked my Dad, who couldn't remember seeing them in use until the mid-60's.
  4. Whoa. That is still a bit steep considering my Super Clean container is a gallon.

Wow. Jim, your paint work has improved by leaps and bounds over the last few years. That is just spectacular. Well done!
  6. What in the blue blazes is SCRAPPLE!?!?
  7. Honestly my photography has always been my last priority when it comes to modeling. I take pics to show off my work a bit and thats all I'm shooting for. At least for the time being. However all you aspiring Revell/Gearz contest types, those pics are critical. If you don't have good photography skills/equiment, find someone who does.
  8. Years ago when the rat rod movement was becoming popular, and we started seeing models built rat-fashion I was really appalled. The idea of building something to look bad on purpose was completely alien to me. I just couldn't wrap my brain around it. I mean you wouldn't want a real car all rusty and junky right? So why build one in scale? In fact I started a thread on the old SA forum (before it got strict over there) about that very subject of WHY? It turned into a rather heated argument. However over the years folks have really stared making beaters, rats and barn finds an art form. And THAT I can really respect. After I tried my first weathering job, it was pretty inevitable that I try my own rat and I really enjoyed it. And its not easy. Sincerely. Some people think, "I'll throw some rust colored paint at it and call it weathered." We seem to be seeing a lot of that lately. It's every bit as difficult to make a model car look "authentic" as a weathered ride as it would a fine glossy show car. The pics of my rat rods everyone here has probably seen a zillion times so I'll spare you the repetition, but if you haven't, check my Photobucket link below.
  9. I'm really kicking this around Virgil. I've had a box stock build bouncing around in my head for a bit. I might do it with you guys this weekend. More soon.
  10. Hey Matt I really like that Duster. But here's and idea for ya. The idea behind that bumper guard is to protect things yes? So why place the headlights up on the hood where they can be easily damaged? Mount those suckers behind that grill!
  11. I'm very sorry for your loss Darin. I've always searched for words of comfort in times like these, but I know there really aren't any. You'll see each other again, I have faith in that at least.
  12. You have my attention sir. Pray do continue. Welcome to our humble forum.
  13. Sorry it didn't work out there. BUT don't discount rattle cans with the salt technique. First off. Don't use table salt. Koscher salt for the win! It's a much heavier grain and easier to knock off after the top coat. THEN..........scrub it down with 70% rubbing alcohol. This will thin the paint down some, allowing the smaller pieces of salt to break away as well as feathering out the breaks in the paint. These were done with koscher salt and rattle cans.
  14. Very cool! I like it.
  15. He sent me a PM that said that Virgil knows what happened. Apparently he is not comfortable publicly sharing what has happened. I don't blame him for being disheartened. And not being on forum for a bit will probably help him deal with the loss he's suffered. But as we well know that modeling isn't just an activity you just give up and never think of again. It's art and as such, the artist will seek to express himself again eventually. We'll be here when he's ready to give it another try. Take care Rick. Be cool.
  16. I don't mean to pry, but what happened to your models?
  17. A lot of great work going on here. I'm quite glad this one is a year long CBP, as life continually derails my modeling plans. If I can escape work this weekend there will be more work on the Puma.
  18. I've never been to a contest where the non-box stock catagories refered to the type of work done to the car. The catagory refers to the type of car the model is supposed to represent. Simple as that.
  19. Any mod that makes a car unroadworthy (dedicated racers exempt) gets a thumbs down from me. If it's still functional and safe, I could care less how they build them, as long as they keep building them.
  20. Here's some scratched suspension parts for a futuristic military vehicle for Cranky's Zombie Hunt.
  21. Wood cooking skewers too.
  22. I never said you didn't have a right to your opinion. I said, that because you are a non-entity here, that your words have no value. Yes, you have posted on some model related threads, however it is evident that you are much more interested in adding more drama to your Pavlovian entertainment. As for you not seeking respect - that much is obvious. Welcome to my ignore list, you are there all by yourself.
  23. On top of 50+ hour work weeks, I'm also a gamer. Right now it's Star Wars: the Old Republic.
  24. This would be a great idea, IF the person in question actually started threads or made posts. He doesn't. The only time we hear from this person is when the opportunity to attack Harry arises. Did you date his sister or something, Harry? He is a non-entity here. His opinions hold no weight because he has not made himself part of this community, has made no friends, has earned no respect by his actions, his words, his body of work. Here. On this forum. He may have these things elsewhere, but I doubt it. I barely have time to build models let alone a costume, so I'll just enjoy the show. As for Virgil, the Mad Poster, Advocate of All Things Rusty and Crusty, I support him 100%. You may not like him, his style or how often we hear from him, but he has given a lot of his time to helping others build better models. He is passionate about finding new and cool ways to build and then passing on his knowledge and expertise. More-so than any other person on any forum I have heard of. Seems people can't handle having a good thing. Gotta tear it down.
