Was what I saw really a UFO?

Bump! Maybe this should be a sticky? You definitely need a good quality drill bit for this operation. Last thing you want is your bit wandering off and damaging things beyond the point of no return.? I use a large darning needle to mark the spots to drill. I also cut a really skinny strip of #1000 sandpaper and use it like dental floss to smooth the inside of the handle.

This one maybe? https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/71690-drill-out-that-door-handle/

“Stops on a dime now” said the mechanic.

I didn’t do a dedicated build thread Bil, but put it in this community thread. https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/188879-the-49-mercury-thread-because-if-you-havent-built-one-yet-you-should/

I’m along for the ride too Bil.? I recently built one, and I agree, it is a really nice kit.? The only part that doesn’t have real nice locating points is the sidepipes.

Thanks Curtis. I used a .031” drill bit in a hand held pin vise. I VERY carefully drilled four holes, then used a sharp hobby knife to whittle and scrape out the center. Then I cut a long strip of 1000 grit sandpaper about 3/32” wide and used it like dental floss to smooth out the hole. I see it needs a bit more dressing.

1961? Olds super 88

Thanks, that is how I research all my builds David. I searched this car too and have yet to find one without the so-called “skegs” on the rear quarters. I wish I had taken a picture from the rear also. -

Nope. The “bubble top” roof was not available in’62 as far as I can tell. Plus, the parallel body lines come to a point at the rear of a ‘61, whereas they stay parallel on a ‘62. More likely some where along the line a ‘62 or later bumper was installed and the rear fenders modified to match? Just my guess.?♂️ Edit: It doesn’t look like a ‘62 bumper either. Maybe just some custom work? 1962 -

Burnish some tape down on the moldings and make a few patterns/templates before sanding anything off.

Unfortunately no…I only took the one picture and didn’t realize there was anything odd about, not being familiar with those cars. I have zoomed in on the back end and there are definitely no “skegs” on it. I’m thinking there must have been substantial rust or other damage to the area? Or maybe a previous owner just despised the skegs…I think it looks better without them really. If I ever come across it again, I will definitely ask the owner what’s up.? -
I think the steering column is way too long, so I chucked it in my drill and shaped it down to a more realistic length. Made a new turn signal lever from .015” wire and Super glue. I have no decals for this kit, so I used the leftover guages from a Revell ‘Cuda.? I was all set to put some primer on the body…I thought. I went to test fit the hood and find that it sits way below the fender level. I had to add a .020” strip on the drivers side, and .015” on the passenger side. That’s were it sits now. When the Tamiya thin is dry enough I will shave the excess off the spacer strips.

Thanks Guys! Yeah time sure flies when you’re retired…I remember at work when days dragged on forever.?

No worries on my end, I’ve got what I need. Thanks.?

Odd that your kit instructions are for a prestige kit, but call it a 1968. The Scalemates 099-38159 instructions match yours, but do not show the display stand.
-
The 099-38159 instruction sheet I posted above is from scalemates for the gray car box. The parts match the yellow prestige edition exactly. Thanks for that hint Harry. The prestige edition also contains a display stand.
-
Possible? The instructions you posted are for a 1968 Corvair, but mine is sold as a 1969….but the kit number is the same 6773. If there were any changes you would think they’d give it a different number.? The 2005 release is just a rebox (different number though) as the instructions are identical to the parts I have in the box.

And those tires! They look like Interco boggers. Link to article about the tractor: https://www.dieselworldmag.com/uncategorized/from-farm-to-hot-rod/

Thanks Harry, I will check them out too. Edit: It appears that the next release instructions are identical to the kit #6773 pictured above. Thankfully my kit is not missing any parts.?
-
Thank You very much Gerry.? I have parts that are not shown on the Fotki site, so I’m not sure what I have and don’t have. Edit: I have a complete kit and it is apparently identical to the next release.? Parts for the “145” engine and ”Spyder” option are not included in either of these two kits.

Can anyone post pictures of the instructions for this kit? I found them on Fotki, but they are chopped up, out of order, and I think missing sections? Thanks in advance, Greg.?
