machining own parts whats good to start out on
CAL replied to jw78z28's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have had mine for six months or so and kind of figured it all out, plus I was formerly a machinest. So if you have any questions feel free and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. It is what it is, it is not the best money can buy, but I have not been disappointed either. -

Yes, it uses pretty standard stuff. Littlemachineshop.com is a good place to get stuff. They carry all the replacement parts for these machines, tooling, and addons. You will just want to get a 3/16 draw bar because the stock one is metric and it is hard to find metric collets. Otherwise it's standard MT2/MT3 arbors. The tool post on the lathe is also standard for a micro and tooling is easy to find 5/16 IIRC. I haven't had any trouble getting anything. -

That is basically what my stuff is, and if you have some machining background and know how to set them up they are not bad little machines. There are a bunch of little tricks to them, more on the mill than the lathe. However, it is hard to beat the price. You could even get some steppers and a controler and do a CNC machine from these basics. -

I got a Sieg X2 micro mill and 7X10 lathe, you kind of have to know how to set it up and tune it. However, once it dialed in it works good. I have been happy with it. I got my mill new and my lathe off Ebay, cheap and had to put some money into it. All together I got it all up and running for 1/2 what a new one costs. If you have money to spend and want turn key stuff Sherline, but it is very pricey. The basic machines are just the half of it. All the other stuff that goes along with having a machine shop is the other half. I have well over a $1000 invested in my machines. I would strongly discourage a combo machine. -

I thought about it, it would just be a brutle drive, especailly if something happened along the way. They are a blast to drive, for sure, my car, a 964 is about 87% 993.

Yeah it was 1377 miles away with not much between. Believe me that was the first serious plan to drive it back. Really, the only good place to stop is Salt Lake which was almost 900 miles and a 15hr + drive. Trust me, I will be driving it as soon as it lands.

How many BUILT models do you own?
CAL replied to Jeff Sauber's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Exactly. I have about 7 built on display, 20 that were built and distoryed in a move sitting in a box, 3 that were sold and ended up in a museum, 10 started and about 450 unbuilt kits, and I am averaging about 1 build in 1 1/2 years over the past 5 years or so. The math isn't working out unless I live 750 years. -

A Lenco is basically an automatic transmission. It has a plantary set a automatice clutch pack and the lever is connected to a servo or actuator that locks that particular ratio. I don't remember what it was patterened off of but it was some standard automatic transmission parts that were used. Each gear is one unit and you can stack as many together as you think you need. The reverser was a seperate unit. They were running 6 speed Lencos about the time I was getting out in the 1990s. I am not sure what ever happened to G-Force but that looked like a regular 4 or 5 speed manual box, only they turned it on it's side and gave each gear it's own lever.

I have very little doubt that really did happen somewhere sometime someplace. -

this should work for most practical purposes. I built another bench and moved the machine shop to the back.

Model Cars being built on youtube
CAL replied to kitefighter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have seen those, they are good. -
Yeah, I had a model stolen from a LHS display case. It sucks especailly when they say sorry, but didn't even offer to replace the kit or anything.

So how big is the garage?
CAL replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
apperently not big enough Maybe I need to try that. I thought I was the only one with that problem. -
Yeah, unless you are Tifosi, who cares. I am a Porsche and Ferrari fan and can't even strike up a conversation with the people I run into.
