EXCESSIVE PRICE INCREASES.
CAL replied to E St. Kruiser50's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Donno but I get cheap kits out of Japan. Fujimi 250 GTO $24 $30 shipped LHS $62 Tamiya new C9 $20 $27 shipped LHS $49 Tamiya FXX $49 $55 shipped LHS $79 You get the idea so I am not typing them all out. However, generally a Japanese kit orded for Japan, or HK is 1/2 the LHS price. Yeah I am not paying $30-$40 for a Revell kit that was under $20 last year. The Revell Nova was the most I ever paid for a 24/25 scale domestic. -
Does anyone own a CNC lathe milling machine?
CAL replied to Smart-Resins's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd lay it down if I had the dough. If you were looking at it do some kind of business venture that is the way to go. Pretty much everyone I know likes their Sherline. I don't know any with a CNC, but their basic lathe and mill they like. If it were me I'd do the $3085.00 which includes all the stepper motors for the CNC package and build my own PC. I wonder how much the software is. I know I could build twice the PC they are offering for 1/2. Looks like it's boiling down to $1700 for the PC and software in that package. Something to consider. -

Don't think it's CNC though just a Lathe and mill. A CNC is in whole nother ball park. I have looked around at checked them out. I am planning on getting a small machine shop set up this year myself. But it wont be a CNC, A Sherline CNC ready mill and lathe is $3100 + a PC + software +++ I can see it being an easy 5k when all said and done. I did physically look and Harbor Freights Mill and Lathe which is probably what I will get for about $700 set up. It was much better that I thought it was going to be, however, I still have reservations about durabilty and accuracy. The alternative is a Sherline set up and the bare minium is going to be $1200 for a mill and lathe without any attachments or tooling. Or if I could find an old shcool unimate I'd snap one of those up. I keep looking but haven't found one. -
Any suggestions on laptops???
CAL replied to cruz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yes Compaq at one time were real good, then HP bought them which was also real good but both got bad for awhile. I had an HP that was replace with a Compaq which was replaced with another Compaq all under warranty, and then had gone bad again just out of warranty. I think if I was going to buy a laptop I'd get a MacBook. Otherwise I build my own. Best computer I have ever had, hands down, period. I guess HP's quality has gone back up a bit, but not without a black eye. -
you guys crack me up. looks like it ate too much and threw up.

Oh look someone put some meat like product in your disk drive. That's something my wife would let our kids do if I had kids.

No usually you have car special built specifically for Le Mans, or at least major body work. Other tracks would typically have much different set ups and aero work. And no those louvers really had nothing to do with cooling, it was all aero.
-
I think back then they just change the whole nose. Now days they can replace just that louvered panel with more or less louvers. It works like a chimney. The more agressive the louvers the more downforce. The less agressive the less frontal downforce. This can be done by the number of louvers and how tall they were. Covers would take away frontal downforce. Of course, this also change the rear grip of the car. Le Mans is considered by a large a low downforce track. Lots of long straights some sweeping corners and few high downforce corners. Weather is always another consideration.
-
I am not sure what you are talking about. The louvers over the front tires? Those were an aero device to change frontal down force by add or subtracting.

That's how I feel about the 70 RS Camaro I got rid of: accident free, rust free, needed a cylinder head.

Interesting Formula One story going around...
CAL replied to Len Colombo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There has been a US F1 Constructor, since 1980. Shadow/Ford which only won 1 race in 7 years the program ran. In fact, there has only been 3 countries who ever produced a WCC title, when England at the top of the list. If they are starting from scratch it would take more than a year. -

Who'd they buy? Because that is the only forseeable way to get into F1 and there is a number to choose from. Super Aguri Honda Jaguar In recent history. And many many more from the past, that are still around but couldn't keep up in F1. Where is the money coming from? It takes a cool 100M easy (before every seeing race 1) just to develop a team much less campaign one. I don't see it happening in this economy. Not that I wouldn't like to see it happen. -
The up side is you can't seem much of the motor. the down side is there are no engine lables that are so prevelant on 911s.
