1972 Challenger parts needed!
Bills72sj replied to usmc_vette1984's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have built the Lindberg 72. I thought it was petty decent. I sanded off the incorrect side (strakes?). I converted the wonky hood scoop to a day two 440 6-Pak scoop. I did add some BMF to the grille opening to simulate the two trim lines. -
Tamiya clear blue for windows tinting
Bills72sj replied to gtx6970's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I use Future floor polish in a paper Dixie cup and some blue food coloring. Be advised it has to be pretty dark in the cup to show actual tint on the windows. If you screw up, It comes right off with household ammonia. No harm, no foul, no crazing. -
Born in 1961. Started modeling in the late '60's through the mid 70's. Only built cars and they were pretty easy to put together. As a teen, they were getting too easy until Movin' On TV show switched me to building semi's. Henceforth, my favorites are/were AMT and MPC due to subject matter. I really like the subjects Johan put out but the only one I ever built was the twin engine Haulin' Hearse.

Thank you for the reply.

Errors? I don't see any errors. (...and, I am NOT asking you to show them either.)

Very nice scratch building. I like what you have done. Would you happen to have ANY pieces left over from the 69 Grand Prix?
-
That is awesome! I purchased a 3D 1969 Grand Prix. My skillset (and patience) is not good enough to tackle the bodywork needed to smooth it out.

I need to stop lol

Hmmm... more cases. Unfortunately my wife has capped my indoor real estate. I have just one case for my builts. -
The pizza boxes in the trash is a nice touch. You do seem to have a pretty high female count for an auto shop. Great detail throughout.

Today's cell phones take great pictures for the resolution needed to view them on a PC. I use a couple of clamp on halo lights to enhance the front lighting. They can be had from Amazon for less than $10. Great for modelers that need more light or directed light too.

When I "kind of" had money I bought all the ebay kits I "kind of" could afford. Now that I have "more" money I buy the subjects I really want. Then again, I am at around 250 kits and have yet to retire. I shall look forward to the time I can get started on them.

Beautiful model. I have a suggestion regarding your photography. You seem to have all the light sourced from above. You may wish to move it down and face it the same direction the camera faces. The side views are not well lit.

Got married to my only wife in 1990. I built maybe 2 models when we moved into our 1st studio apartment just before we got married (so she knew). I had a stash of 10 kits that followed me through 7 moves. The priority was raising 3 boys. Around 2003 I finally had my own hobby room. My stash grew in leaps and bounds thanks to ebay and some LHSs. I am around 250 kits now. My wife is very tolerant of the spending. She has limited me to one spare room in our smallish house. My issue will eventually be lack of display space. My wife has her own hobbies. More than half of our backyard is her garden and we have a granddaughter she spends all day with 3 days a week. If I had to choose, it would be her 100 times out of 100.

Filling molded in sidemarkers
Bills72sj replied to gtx6970's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Make sprue goo. A small amount of MEK in a tin. Feed thin sprue rods until it is gooey. Fill in the whole area, one at a time, while horizontal. Sand flat after it cures. Since it is styrene it will sand just like styrene AND will not shrink back over time like putty can. -

I have most of my collection (about 300 kits) from ebay. I had minor issues with what came but never lost money. I do not sell on ebay, (I don't need the money). PayPal since day one. Isolates you CC info from sellers.

Very nice build.

Nowadays expanding storage space for you PC is pretty cheap. Hosting sites are somewhat risky as they change their access rules and/or go out of business. There is also metadata hidden in the photo file that can put semi personal data at risk such as location.

I like the direct file transfer for maximum resolution. I no longer downsize the file as today's digital bandwidth is much improved over the days of dial up.

Masking for two tone paint
Bills72sj replied to rossfox's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I would BMF with burnishing with a round toothpick. Then some help from some 1/16" vinyl tape. It will help keep your blade on the straight and narrow. -
I only take pics with my iPhone. A USB cable to my PC allows me to cut and paste them into a folder of my choosing. I have 5 different photo manipulating programs but basically I only really use the crop feature. Occasionally, I may do some color correcting or contrast touches.

Masking for two tone paint
Bills72sj replied to rossfox's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That is my go to as well. It NEVER leaves residue. It is superior in stopping bleed under such as panel lines. I can be left on for MONTHS with no ill effects. The tricky part is using it for straight lines or curves. For accomplishing that, I use 1/16" vinyl tape as an edge guide over the top of the Parafilm. I trim along its edge with a NEW hobby knife and use the thin line tape to remove the unwanted portion. Parafilm also has the benefit of being able be "fudged" into place with a toothpick for very precise placement. -
Very nice. I love the clean lines of that body.
