Hobby Lobby
LL3 Model Worx replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yea, it's best to buy in bulk for sure... shipping is a big expense but when the average kit is $15 its hard to pass up when you see someone selling that same kit here for $50 or more. -

I don't hate any manufacturer...not even MPC. Alot of there kits are "challenged" I will say that. I kinda get a chuckle out of their "parts floating in a bag" approach. I really only buy them when the deal is too good and or the subject isn't available elsewhere. They all have good ones and bad ones, just some more than others. Lately I've really been loving Japanese stuff though, their culture just lends itself and shows in their attention to detail. That being said they also have plenty of bad ones. -

I just scored another gem on evilbay myself... Fujimi enthusiast BMW M635... in the Testors boxing. Another "Make offer" steal at $27 shipped. I don't pay nowhere near $80 for a Japanese kit... I shop plaza Japan I just ordered 10 kits for $284... But I feel ya. -
Plastic tires update
LL3 Model Worx replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yup. If they would just make it clear what's actually in the box that would be a good place to start. I mean alot of us (myself included) will work with most anything if it's not just a total dog... but we also usually know that going in... alot of these new folks in the hobby and some of the folks who have just returned and been out of it a long time do not know what kit is what. And when they go into a kit and see what's in that camaro kit after seeing the box... disappointment is very likely. And its bad for the hobby and that's no good. -
I've used these on 1:1 precisely 2 times... works like a charm. If you could get a small enough wheel it would work.
-
Mike I don't have the clear poly spray like I thought... sorry man. I'd do it up in clear lacquer though... that what if and when it gets banged up you can wet sand/tape off and re spray and buff and be good as new again.

Plastic tires update
LL3 Model Worx replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I didn't buy it. I was aware of what it was before it released. I was just pointing out the issues of being misleading to the uninitiated. Of course we can all pull tires from the parts box.... I mean that's a pretty normal practice anyway ? but that's not the issue here, it's with the advertising. Pretty sure Modelcarsmag forum shouldn't be doing Revells job of advertising their products in a forum thread... so that's no defense for them. The fact they reissued the kit isn't bad at all... and im sure people will still do great things with the kit... but the problem is they didn't make it clear and decided to let it out the door. That's my only complaint other than folks trying to justify it by saying just use spare parts etc... because that's not the point. I don't mean to offend anyone, it's just that if you let things like this slide unchecked it hurts the hobby and that hurts us all. -
Stripping Tamiya Paint

Seems like sanding the body down and a respray would be quicker and easier? I could be wrong but if lacquer primer has etched the plastic would you actually want to remove it ? -

Hobby Lobby
LL3 Model Worx replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Man... 99% of the kits we all buy and build are "same old same"... thats kinda what this hobby is. A bunch of recycled plastic being pumped into recycled molds being put into boxes with recycled box art in alot of cases. We do get a new tool once in a blue moon I'll admit, but its very rare these days as you know. It's all about what we can do with what's available... imagination is the key. Even walking down the isle of a "vanilla" hobby lobby, its pretty damn hard to not get inspired by looking at the kits... even if they are the same kits that have been sitting there for 3yrs... I can look at the same boxes and get different ideas every time. How many Mopar builds have we scene on this very forum, that are beautifully executed, stunning to look at and yet still very generic in the fact that they've been done to death for the past 60yrs in some cases? They will continue to be done, because people love them! And want one of every color and trim package. You can't expect a big box retailer to carry the niche items in our hobby... I don't go in there expecting to see the Fujimi, Tamiya, Aoshima, Hasegawa, or Trumpeter kits that I would like to see. Or photo etch parts etc... If it's not Revell or Round2 it's not gonna be on those shelves, because they are marketing largely to women and children. We are the minority in the big box retail model world, so its gonna be the things that sell on those shelves or what they can get the cheapest and peddle to women and children. We just so happen to know they have kits and we frequent when the price is right. No crime, just general consumer driven capitalism... clearly it works, they keep getting our money wether we are the intended customer or not. -
Thanks, not gonna lie I'm pretty proud of it. I offered the seller $10 with an attached message that said "I can do $20 shipped" they replied with " I can get close at $23" Boom ? done deal. I almost couldn't believe it.

Stripping Tamiya Paint

DoT3 brake fluid will do the trick... that or wrap the body in bologna... then peel. ? -
Mike I may have a can of clear polycarbonate paint... you could seal your decals with future or clear varnish then shoot this over it and it would be pretty solid. Let me check and see if I have some.
-
Yup, and that is exactly how I've done it 1:1. The silly putty is cheap and effective at taking a shape around an oil pan and holding it in position and leaves no residue. Admittedly there's other options, but it just works.
-
Gotta be honest... I scored that lambo for $23 shipped. Using the "Make offer" function can yield unbelievable results sometimes!

Got these today at a ridiculously good price... Evilbay did right by me for once. I've been hunting this boxing for a long time... despite the fact its an incredible kit, I want to scan the image blow it up and frame it! The box art is just plain awsome. This one was just on my list of cars from the 80's that I have to build. The box got damaged in shipping but the kit is fine... the package arrived with a big hole in the outer box.

Also, don't make the mistake I did once and make your engine too high where the hood won't fit...?
-
I doubt this will help. I set the engine in its intended location and use silly putty to hold it up and in place while I measure. Then I will turn to the Evergreen bags and find either some square or round tubing... or even some flat stock depending on the type of vehicle. Then basically measure, cut, file and fit. Sorry I'm at work, so no pics...

Hobby Lobby
LL3 Model Worx replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I can certainly tell you that hobby lobby has in fact stocked at least 3 of those kits, because I have the kits and receipts to prove it. And while my local store tends to keep around 40-50 different car kits on the shelves I understand it can leave you kind of wanting once you own them all...been there, done that. All that being said, I will say that I live in Tennessee, we have the second highest sales tax in the country slightly lower than Louisiana... mine locally is 9.75% So on 40% off week I can walk in and buy four $40 kits at $105.34 I can tell you that I will make another $105.34 before I build those 4 kits... im actually going to make alot more 105.34's before I finish them. Chances are by the time I finish them there will be different kits on the shelf and I'll go and drip my $105.34 again. 40% week is really hard to beat... no matter where you shop for kits, besides estate sales, garage sales, thrift stores etc... -

Well, I'd say the skill level 4 is right on the mark... Takes level 4 belief suspension skill to witness the kit you just purchased. Defending Revell on this one is beyond my comprehension.?? Guy pays $40 for kit... "but hey I got cool yet very specific decals" Guy notices the "engine" looks like bad example of a Buick nailhead... "but hey I got some cool yet very specific decals".... for forty bucks ? Whatever folks gotta tell themselves, but man it's just a bad look on Revell. Pure Copium... -

Current building techniques
LL3 Model Worx replied to Bobjernigan3's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's a fantastic attitude to have! That is what modeling is all about. For me it's all about the escape I get sitting at my desk in silence toiling away at a vision I've had in my head... sometimes that vision is realized wether it be fully or partially... but to me personally it's not really about the end result. It's about the journey. That doesn't mean I don't like having something nice on my shelf. But I rarely think about or look at what I've built because I'm busy thinking of what I'm building or going to build. My plan one day is to have enough completed models to give as gifts on Christmas or something to all my friends/family.
