1/8 Ford Cosworth DFV engine
Big John replied to mad mike's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Stunning work as usual Mike, The oil pumps are a work of art in them selves and your attention to the details even down to the raised lettering is very impressive. Can't wait for more. -
Eureka I found it! Your engine stream. How do you tell the difference between the 283 327 350 an400 Chevys? I know, measure the bore? Wonderful engine selection, and a joy to see. Where is the Allison? Thanks, John

Vintage Top Fuel FEDs, 1:16 brass chassis
Big John replied to Mike Williams's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanks Mike. They do have one for 1/8" but seeing what you have has the old brain storm rumbling. It shouldn't be too hard to turn up some spindles and make one in various sizes. Look forward to seeing the old slingshot progress. -

Thanks for the tips Mike, Annealing definitely helps the workability or the metal. I was more interested in how to bend the round tube. I've not been satisfied with using the spring sleeve bending tools and not sure if anyone makes a mandrel bender for tubing 3/16 on down. Thanks again for you info. -

I do LOVE the look of COE trucks. Having had a 70s Chevy van and trying to change spark plugs I can't imagine how much of a hassle it would be to work on the older ones. Here is a suggested paint job that was parked down the street a few years back. -

I can see a vast improvement! You must be between projects. -
In my research (only as seen on google) I've not seen any others like this one. Back in the 60s there was one in 1/8 scale that was available through a magazine ad however looking back now it was pretty crude. I know a fellow that did some customizing on his and it is better. I don't think it was offered as a kit.

Hi Mike, Beautiful work, very clean and detailed. A couple of questions (it is hard to find multi word searches) and a tip or two.... What do you use to cut your brass tubing? Ive tried a fine razor saw but that is pretty crude and a tubing cutter is only good on larger sizes. And how do you make such smooth bends? Do you add a filler that you can melt out or leave in? Now tips... I've learned that the key to really nice soldering is Clean Clean Clean the joints. Also that the solder will only go where there there is flux. The last I use to advantage when soldering wire screen to a metal frame. Thanks again for your WIP. -

The issues with scratch building

Thanks Straightliner! My 'What if I could work with Jean Bugatti' Based on the AutoRail engines and body aero package. I've got to get back on the bench and make some progress. Here are a couple of other uses for the ren shape and why I never toss out any but the smallest scraps. -
The issues with scratch building
Big John replied to IbuildScaleModels's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Ren Shape or at least the slab I have, and guard with my life, is basically polyester filler, AKA bondo, that is cast in a slab. No grain no bubbles. You may find smaller pieces but the one I lucked into is 2" thick X 24"X48". I was able to get mine when the company I worked for went out of business and auctioned off their materials. Sands beautifully and in thinner strips it bends well. You can do laminated curves with it like bent-wood. -
A problem I've run into, especially if I am using a rattle can or the paint isn't thin enough, is that it doesn't run into the panel lines just kind of pulls back an forms a bead along the edge. If the plastic is light and I am shooting a dark color I get light or unwanted color in the panel lines. I got some lines to scribe on my scratch build and will definitely try this out. Thanks,

Does this include all the kits I haven't even started? As long as there"s glue and paint there's hope. What an amazing variety of design concepts it makes one humble! Great work Guys and Gals. Now back to the bench! -

You Got Me! I was skimming through and thought Ah, A Dodge Superbird, with a really nice paint job it was only later that you mentioned that it was a Camaro and I had to look again. Should be a looker when it's done. -
