I so wanted to build this car when I was 20 ,but had to wait till I could get the parts and decals.I built this from the revell kit. I made the rear wheel well modifications by cutting out the wheel well and moving it forward. Then used the left over piece fill in behind moved wheel well. I cut the back seat out then hogged out the side panels with a dremel, and filled the area in with sheet styrene. I then made a 4 point roll bar from.080 rod.I used longer front and back coil springs from the amt 1962 bel air. From what I can tell the real car used a modified stock suspension. Without ladder bars or front straight axle. So there’s no reason to relocate the front wheel wells.I used the Webber manifold from amt’s 1963 corvette and made injector stacks from aluminum tubing. I think the headers came from the amt pro street 67 chevelle. The paint is testors enamel however I painted the hood about 6 years after the body, and the shade of white is off.i suspect testors changed the formula. The decals are from yesteryear. From southern Motorsport hobbies. The Howard’s wheels came from modelhaus.i know of no kits that had these wheels, and the modelhaus parts are getting tough to find.the slicks and front tires are amt. all and all it came out pretty good and displays well.

Sweet job! I’ve had this kit for ever and been afraid to build it.theses detailed old revell kits can be very fussy to build. -
Yea that paint did that long after I applied the decals as it cured.the thing I can think of is that the base color is a different brand of paint. Thanks for the nice complement.

This is box stock revell.except the rear wheels are from polar lights.the paint color is tamyia clear red over a white base coat.

The minuteman decals are from yesteryear.there available on eBay from seller named raceminded(26757) I would love to be able to get Sam auxier decals for this mustang if you find them let us know were. as for the roll bar I would just use .80 plastic tubing and make it look close I’ll keep a eye out for a magazine article on this car

Cool topic this would make a good bonneville salt flats racer

I’ve made 4 of these camaro funny body conversion’s so far.they are fairly easy to do. I had a couple of the old tan ertl eara kits that I didn’t know what to do with.so I brought some of the round 2 orange plastic camaro kits on sale at hobby lobby, and started cutting.i sacrificed one body from wheel well to wheel well to use for patch panels.with the other body’s i cut out the front wheel well as far forward to the front pan as possible.then cut out a patch to fill in behind the wheel wells the patches get it kinda close it dose require some filing to true up the body lines.some times I have to trim the decals to fit.i think most of them are drawn to fit a comp resin body. my conversion fits the common mpc chassis very well.the mustang interior fit’s the best the challenger interior will need to be trimmed.

I didn’t know this Willy’s gasser existed until I saw this issue. That’s all it took, I just had to build it. I started with the amt Willy’s double kit and cut the hood away from the fenders then glued fenders to the body. I used the amt parts pack small block Chevy with the blower & belt, hydro transmission, chassis, interior , rear wheels, leaf springs, and ladder bars from the Willy’s kit. The headers are from revells anglia, the front suspension is cut down coil springs along with the steel wheels from amt’s 1962 bel air kit ,with parts box radius rods and aluminum tubing. The rear end came out of the amt 1967 comet. The decals came from scale modeling by Chris, whom, unfortunately, I believe is no longer with us.

I’ll do my best to help you out here as i have also wanted to build these. For the 1964 comet look for the Jan 1964 issue of super stockers in action you will also need the following: amt model king 1964 comet; revell 1964 thunderbolt kit, any issue, for basic engine ,chassis, shock towers, fire wall, slicks, and front tires; amt 1963 corvette will provide the rear wheels and blower assembly; amt 1962 Chevy bel air north wind has a nice set of shallow American front wheels; amt double dragster, any issue, can give you the bell housing ,direct drive in&out box; Amt’s engine parts pack will give you the headers, or make them from aluminum tubing; Smp decals makes a decal sheet for this; for the 1965 comet, look for the sept 1965 issue of super stockers in action you will also need the following: moebius model king comet cyclone; A Polar lights funny car will give you the front wheels, tires, and motor; amt double dragster any issue for the front sub frame cut from the fiat along with the bell housing and in&out box, and the front axle; amt 1963 corvette for the rear wheels; you might be able to make the engine dog house from the mpc super judge funny cars interior parts I think polecat decals makes a decal sheet for this for the body color i would try tamiya’s metallic red

You nailed the look great job. Did you paint the white or use the decals, and what paint brand/color did you use for the interior? I was using krylon brushed nickel which I now am having a hard time finding.

Your build looks great! Although the word turd is a little harsh I agree these old revell kits are fussy to build, and the amt steel axles are superior to anything else.i keep a length of piano wire for making new axles. This one’s on my to build list along with the orange crate, and stone woods Cooke Willy’s. after I run out every thing else.Atlantis keep these old kits coming
-
Wow it’s just so mad cool.what a great use of those old Allison’s . then there’s that expertly cut down fiat body, and that sweet heavy metal flake blue.yea all is right with the world.
-
I would love to see a convertible up top included with this kit.
-
You got the shade of gold just right it looks real sweet.I used a piece of window screen for the grill on mine but I got the color a little off. These amt funny’s are so fun to build . round 2 keep them coming.

M W Elky replied to larman's topic in Drag Racing
Love it! These competition coupe’s look great in gold.I have a survivor from my dad that he painted gold in the 60’s . he used those long headers from the 53 studebaker kit. My kid eyes though they were so cool. You inspired me to do a freshen up on it.thanks so much. -
You made this look great.theses old revell kits can be fussy to build

This post is the first of my new series, “Building the Covers”. I think most of us can say as kids we just couldn’t wait to get our hands on some car magazines for our drawing and model building inspiration. I don’t want to think about how many of our dads’ hot rod and super stock magazines I massacred by cutting out the pictures. I now think it’s pretty cool to display a built model and matching magazine cover together. It can also be a good challenge to find the right kit, decals, paint color, and extra parts to build with. For this first one I chose the Arlen Vankee pro stock duster. I started with the amt duster and the revell hemi dart for a Donor kit. It gave up it’s hemi, rear suspension, roll bar, hood scoop, and shifter. The tunnel ram is from amt’s pro street 66 Nova, the carburetor’s are from the amt 67 comet. Paint color is testors Daytona yellow lacquer; decals are slixx. I think Billy Gooche also had a good set of decals for this car that were slightly different. The wheels on this are old Johann Fenton slots, the slicks are from the hemi dart, front tires are from the amt poly glass gasser.
