Whte Western Star Tow truck
Gary Chastain replied to Oldmopars's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Love the bed modifications, looks timely. Like the big front tires. With those big front tires, it’s just begging for a front drive axle and transfer case, maybe more aggressive tire tread in the rear. Maybe just a very well used, faded, light rust with a timely color. I have a left over wrecker bed and this is giving me ideas, gotta follow this. -
Wow, great paint work

Progress report: after a lot of fabrication work, I changed the drive suspension to dual springs (more appropriate for T600A KW) retaining the drive axles adding Auslowe brakes, then modified an air lift tag axle adding a straight axle and some Auslowe brakes. Going to need front flares with the wide tires, anyone know who makes some? Or put narrow tires and wheels on the front.

Wow, went to internet to look at T600 rear suspension setup and I never knew they used so many axle brands, different axle setups and different spring setups. I am guessing it I’d based on carry weight, ride quality, straight truck or even tractor/trailer. So I switched rear suspension to a more heavy duty spring setup and added brakes from Auslow that have a lot more detail and are similar to what was on the internet. Drilled everything for air lines before assembly. Now I am sorting out the tag axle. I have three different tags from three different aftermarket makers. Axle height must match the drive axles, so working that out now.

I am new here but I want to share a story that happened to me in another group. I posted a picture of my diesel rat rod build, a member sent me a private message to tell me I installed the water manifold incorrectly. I looked at my instructions and I installed it just like the picture shows. The message included the engine number, Cat 385 or something. Kinda upset me that he was picking my project apart but I looked up the numbers he gave me on the internet and sure enough he was correct and I fixed it. What was cool about how he handled the feedback was outstanding (private) second he gave me instructions to validate. My short coming to take offense too quickly. Something interesting about our hobby. Last fall I went to a car show and was studying the engine compartment and those guys hide every wire and hose to make them look like model cars. We as modelers go to extremes to add every wire and hose we possibly can. We all share a lot of passion and desire to build our best effort every build. To question our builds after we try everything to build our best feels kinda crappy sometimes. I suppose a teacher faces this everyday.
