Tamiya 1/24 Honda CR-X 1.5i Ballade Sports
OldNYJim replied to Italianhorses's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Your work is such a joy to watch - it’s looking great! -
Thanks buddy! Keeping going!! I wanted a nice pearl orange color for this but all the stores are closed...so I mixed one up: Managed to get pretty close to what I had in mind - and it REALLY pops on the body...more soon! IMG_8551.MP4

Thanks buddy! A little more on this one - got the body mostly ready for paint...removed those external door hinges and scribed all the panel lines to give them some more depth: Made some Supertrapp style tunable mufflers, just because I saw them and wanted to add a little something I’d never seen done before: They still need a little clean-up but I like how they look as an interesting little detail anyway. Then, finally for this morning picked out some taillights - I’m going with the ones from a 50 Ford, but I wanted the surrounds body-colored so I got those glued in place now before I start doing the paint: More soon!

Thanks fellas! I really like how this engine looks in the frame! Meanwhile, today’s project is the exhaust. I was pretty pleased to discover that the Deuce kit’s exhaust ALMOST attaches right to the F100 kit’s headers without modification. The driver’s side fits perfect right out of the box, and the passenger side needed a little 4mm extension to counter the pipes being offset a little on the new block - but it’s really painless to make it work! Going to mess with this some more seeing as it was so easy so far - I had an idea for the mufflers that I’m going to experiment with a little but it’s working ok so far! Need to make new mounts for the suspension linkages and do something to replace the crossbrace that doesn’t fit around the bigger engine but it’s pretty painless and fun so far! More soon!

Tamiya 1/24 Honda CR-X 1.5i Ballade Sports

Love it! And that trick of spraying matt clear over black to add some depth works great! I’ve been doing that myself lately too. It really works well for some reason! -
I’ve been wanting to build a Revell Deuce kit for EVER (I know, it’s been out for 20+ years, I’ve had chance...) so I picked one up at Michael’s a few weeks back when I had a bunch of coupons and vouchers and stuff and managed to get it pretty cheap. Then, nice nice lady behind the register told me I could PROBABLY use those coupons again if I wanted another one, long as I did it quickly before their system updated so I picked up one of the Foose F100s whilst I was at it. I really liked the wheels on the F100 and wondered if they’d work well on the Deuce...and whilst I liked the look they’re too big and the chassis would need a bunch of work to make it sit nice and before you know it I’d be into a full-blown project with scratchbuilding and a bunch of fitment issues and end up NOT with a Revell Deuce which was kinda what I wanted to build in the first place. So, back in the realms of sensibleness: I messed with about every wheel and tire in my parts stash and still kept coming back to those kit parts, even if there’s probably 100,000 builds with these already. I like ‘em tho! Something I DO want to kitbash in, to at least make this project a LITTLE interesting is that cool Roush engine from the Foose truck - I haven’t seen that done yet and whilst it doesn’t drop RIGHT into the frame it almost does: The mounts line right up, and all I needed to do to get it to sit level was take a tiny notch out of the front of the floor like so (notched on the top, not notched yet on the bottom, in this pic): I need to thin a fraction out of the electric fan to get pulley clearance, or likely replace it with something better, but it basically drops right in! The crossmember under the frame is another matter, but it’s an encouraging start! So, the plan will be just a nice clean modern hot rod - steering away from a street rod look and more into bare-bones hot rod but with nice modern parts kind of territory. More soon!

SEEE, this is why you need someone who knows and not just do a bunch of Googling to see what you turn up - I found at least a couple of places that called this an FE. Throw in the fact that, like you say, this thing could almost represent an engine made from the 60s to the current day and I soon got confused and out of my depth. Thank you so much!!! Really helpful!!
-
I searched this but fell down a rabbit hole and came out none the wiser... So, I know the common engine in all those Revell Deuce kits is a 5.0 Mustang engine - it says that right on the box. I THINK I know that it’s known as an FE. Im trying to figure out which generation Mustang engine it actually IS - Ford made a lot of Mustangs, and a lot of variations of FE/Small block engines. Im figuring it’s a relatively modern version, at least for when the kit was tooled (mid 90s) but I hate to assume something that someone else probably knows for sure... Bonus points for knowing what the trans is too...thanks fellas!

The Grim-Pala - 70s inspired Street Freak build for NNL East
OldNYJim replied to OldNYJim's topic in Model Cars
Thank you everyone!!! I had so many parts left over from this build (from, you know, not using almost all the kit parts) that I’m going to do another one too - I had a second idea for this theme, and the postponement gave me some extra time to do another one! More on that soon as my $3 eBay body arrives! ? -
Built this for this year’s NNL East common kit category, which is the AMT 63 Impala this year. Lengthened the roof, built a chassis and painted it using about every color I had in my paint stash ? Thanks for looking!!

So what if I WANT a cracked finish?
OldNYJim replied to jaymcminn's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I airbrushed the acrylic on, nice and heavy of a coat and unthinned right from the jar and then blasted it with my wife’s hairdryer on the highest setting (which seems like it’s hot enough that it would burn your head if you actually used it on yourself ?) The longer you blast it the more of the effect you’ll get, within reason. I could’ve got a more extreme effect on this particular project but I didn’t want the candy to split too much and reveal the silver base underneath in this instance. Might take some experimenting, but I suspect it would work with paint other than Tamiya too -

What an OUTSTANDING build - that paint especially is gorgeous. I always enjoy your builds and this one’s no exception. And THREE DAYS?! Man, it takes me that long to get a body ready to paint ? -
That paint is gorgeous! Love the color!

I love it! I’ve always liked these cars! A guy I knew took me out in his once - they’re like a go kart crossed with a roller skate! The color is great, and I like that center console too. I’ve seen some of these with a British flag for a roof graphic...I keep thinking I’d like to do one with a stars n stripes roof - as if they licensed the design to an American company back in the day and there were American made Minis or something! Not sure what a US take on this car would be, but I like daydreaming about it! I know these did well in Japan too, I saw a show on TV about them a while back. Anyhoo, say all that to say - cool build! I like it! ???

Spent the day polishing these balls: They’re the light globes from a Paddy Wagon - but they’re not quite round and they have a seam that runs around them so I’ve been trying to resolve both issues. Not sure if I’m any closer after three rounds of filling/priming/sanding than I was when I started ??. It’s surprisingly difficult to sand something into a perfect sphere! ?

Lock down; might as well do ALOT of painting, and building!
OldNYJim replied to Dann Tier's topic in WIP: Model Cars
?? It doesn’t even need to be a big update...could just be a MINI one if you wanted ?♂️?? -
All I need ?? And I’ve been REALLY eager to build a little shop truck with the Foose F100 kit...I keep picking it up and playing with parts but I can’t quite allow myself to start something else and have MORE in-progress stuff cluttering up the place. ? I do keep mocking stuff up though to amuse myself...

Sounds more like he’s trying to get rich off YOU! ? No way is that price right - could nearly UPS or Fedex them on a 2-3 day service for that price
