Budget source for micro glue applicators
OldNYJim replied to OldNYJim's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I’ve been saving the used-up ones…there’s no way the plastic handle won’t be useful for scratchbuilding SOMETHING! -

Budget source for micro glue applicators

Figures - I always pickup the imitation q-tips too ?? -
Thanks everyone! So…this one got a do-over. I fixed a couple of flaws in the paint and got ready to mask for the next stage, and all the candy colored parts I had masked over started peeling off, even with my favorite almost-no-tack masking tape that I like for multi-layered paintjobs like this. The Future held up - but the candy color was pulling back from the silver base, which I hadn’t had happen before. Bummer, but this is AMERICA, we don’t let a little flaky paint stop us hitting our goals! ????? So…do-over with a slightly simpler paintjob with less masking and less chance of having that issue again… First up, blue flames: Next, the lettering that bit me on the previous version before I’d even finished it…laid down a mask and shot black, and peeled back the lower copy: Followed by candy over top of that exposed silver - tada! Helpful hint for anyone painting lettering like this - if you ever have a little spot like you see on the ‘T’ there where the thin line of paint fails when you’re de-masking, a Gelly Roll gel pen is GREAT for fixing that. They’re a buck or two at Michael’s, and stand up to acrylic clears just fine. Next, the stripes… It’s starting to look like it should! You can see a couple of little flaws in the edge on that pic above, but a fine brush and some silver will fix those easily enough… Then, add the stars to the Stars and Stripes! And finally for this weekend, shot a coat of pearl-infused clear over top just to give it a little shimmer as the light hits the edges: Thanks for looking - more soon! ??

That looks like a great show! I’m in South Bend pretty regularly through the summer for the oval racing there…I should try and combine the two next time they have one of these! Enjoying seeing this project come together!

Budget source for micro glue applicators

Interesting, thank you! I hadn’t actually tried them with any kind of solvents - Q-tips often don’t like that stuff either so it doesn’t surprise me. -
I really like these micro glue applicators that Hobby Lobby sells… …but at $3.99 + tax they’re kinda spendy, especially for a single use item. Did some hunting on Amazon and found these… …for $7 shipped for FIGE HUNDRED! They’re used in the make-up industry, and it seems like there’s not much difference between these cheaper ones and the packaged-for-modellers ones. Just a heads up in case anyone likes and uses these things! I got these ones: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074KVWRVL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5MNS7XS05B8KVMWX75VJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 But there’s some other varieties with different sized heads that you might find useful too!

Surprised these awesome updates aren’t getting more replies (although I didn’t reply either…) Small machining question, Mark (from a complete noobie at turning parts) - for something like the fire extinguisher are you using a specially shaped cutting bit to make that nice curve (and the dome on the underside) or are you really good at knob-twiddling?
-
I think the frame and suspension are moulded in black in this version of this kit too - not sure why they would go to that trouble…perhaps leftover stock of SOME parts from a previous run or something weird like that?
-
Grabbed another couple of Revell 29s from Hobby Lobby seeing as it’s 40%-off week. I wonder if the supply of the 29s will start to dwindle now that the 30 is on the way? Building up my stocks, just in case…I’m not getting caught again if someone drops the tool or misplaces it or whatever happened the first time ?

The Grape Crate - a (mostly) scratchbuilt Model A Woody
OldNYJim replied to OldNYJim's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks fellas! Tiny bit of progress today after letting the paint dry for a few days…painting the wood grain! Masked and shot Tamiya tan acrylic: Wood grain is burnt umber artist’s paint: Then shot a thinned coat of candy yellow and carefully unmasked… Excited to start to see those different material colors come together - the matte wood, shiny pearl paint, satin top and steel wheels… Excited to have some major components in paint and ready to start some assembly and detailing…more soon! -
Absolutely beautiful - these tiny parts are like jewelry! I'd be really proud to make anything that intricate and well-done!

I noticed that some Australian stores have them up for pre-order already, with a release date of November...

Rustoleum 2X Over a Multi-Media Finish
OldNYJim replied to old gearhead's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Future doesn’t polish out well AT ALL in my experience (although I’ve seen good results with it in instances where people haven’t needed to polish out at all.) I like Createx acrylic gloss clear as a non-yellowing easy-to-apply option for when I’m worried about solvents affecting what I’m shooting it over. Polishes out nicely too, once fully cured… -
The weathering on that engine is gorgeous, Steve! Nice work!

Ordered one of these a month or so ago and the eBayer was trying to pull some kind of scam…so I got a refund, reordered elsewhere and it came in 3 days! Excited to start messing with this one

Well, a quarter is 25 cents, so it's 25 cents past eight ?♂️? Sounds like she was just trying to use metric time instead of imperial...

One of you guys in Europe should buy a case or two of these and make some money shipping them to us impatient people in the US

Funny thing - I saw a bunch of maybe 15 or 16 year old kits walking up to that purple hot rod in the last pic above and one kid says "WOAH!! That's beautiful!" and the other one says "Dude, I want one of those when I get my permit!" and another pulls his phone out to take a photo and I thought "That's really cool, these younger guys being into hot rods too!" Turned out they were talking about the black Nissan parked next to it ???
