Walter Cronkite passed away.
roadhawg replied to dwc43's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not just the moon landing, but ALL the space flights! I remember how he would use those plastic models to show how the thing separated and thought that was soooooo cool! No, they don't make 'em like Mr. Cronkite anymore. Thats a shame. -
Guys, I do not use Krylon, so I can't speak from personal experience, but there was a warning on the IPMS USA website about recent changes to Krylon's formula. This is a very lengthy article written by IPMS USA member Richard Marmo, but it is VERY interesting and details the recent formula changes to mainly Krylon, but other paints as well, INCLUDING Model Master Metalizers. It is in the form of a PDF file, so you'll need to download it to read it. Go here: http://www.ipmsusa2.org/reviews2/misc/misc.htm Click on "Features, How To, Etc", and choose "Beware changes to Krylon (and other) Spray Paint" Its about a 850KB PDF file, so if anyone is on slow dialup and wants me to, I can TRY to copy and paste it here. Like I said, I don't use Krylon so it hasn't affected me....yet. I was just reading about it so I'm just trying to save someone some grief.

"Hi, this is Jim Rockford. Please leave a message at the tone and I'll get back to you......... Mr. Rockford? Sue Ellen. Our class is having that crazy scavenger hunt I told you about. If you're wondering what happened to your trailer door, it's going to win me first prize. " Any progress on Jimmy's Firebird? You got me watching a few episodes on Hulu!

I don't like it either...........but it STILL looks better than the Camaro.

Great job with a hard to build kit! Thats the old MPC kit, and yes, its a pretty bad kit. Just remember though, the REAL ones didn't fit together very well either!

I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but the two smaller tubes down low on each side are pitot tubes, and can be found on real Bell 222's. The larger tube on the right side up higher is an "in-flight refueling probe"...like jet fighters have. If you like, PM me and I can send you some pics of these tubes on the "real" Airwolf.

My, oh my. Not much I can add to what everyone else said, but DITTO! My hat is off to you, sir! Fantastic work!

I just can't build straight from the box, no matter how hard I try....I always gotta change something! Sometimes, you might need to combine the parts of two different kits to build one certain model. The leftover parts go in the parts box. This, along with the extra parts left from other kits, is the way to build up a good spare parts box. It takes a little time. A good source of spare wheels, seats, trim parts, ect, are the cheap diecast cars found a WalMarts and truckstops. I'm not kidding. A few years ago, I was building a 74 Trans Am. I couldn't find the correct seats I needed until one day, while browsing at a truckstop, I found a diecast '70 T/A that had the exact seats I needed.....for $4.99. Also, just because there is no specific photoetch kit for a certain car, don't let that stop you. Think outside the box. I'm presently building a '68 Plymouth GTX, and found that the photoetch grille from a '66 Chevelle kit worked perfectly. Look around. You'll be suprised how things will work on something it was never intended for. Good luck, and like PlasticWagens said.....theres lots of people here willing to help.

Thanks, everyone. I won't be working on this for about 2 weeks, as I'll be away from home. When I get back, we'll build the engine and hopefully get the body painted.

Lindberg 66 chevelle SS. Any good?
roadhawg replied to Dragline's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Dave, is that Tarantula intake made correctly, with the carburetor mounted at like a 45 degree angle? -
Due to some non-modeling issues, time has been at a premium the last couple of weeks, and progress is slow....but I did get a little more done. After finishing the interior, I decided to make the unique GTX grille, since that was the next challenge I was unsure of. I figure if I get all the hard stuff done first, the rest will be easy! I started by stripping the chrome off the '68 Road Runner grille and sanding the detail off. I also drilled out the molded in headlights.... I then Alcladded (is that a word?) it. At this point, I could've used the decal grille that is supplied with the Keith Marks decals, but I wanted more of a 3-dimensional look. I decided to cut out the center and use a photoetch grille from a MCG '66 Chevelle set, which has almost the same exact pattern as the GTX grille..... I then installed some clear lenses from the parts box, and used the GTX emblem from the AMT '69 GTX grille....and its finished! Well, I guess its time to start on the engine now. Stay tuned!

What's your scale preference?
roadhawg replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had to go with "other". When I'm not building cars, I like to build 1/48 and 1/72 scale helicopters. ONE would just about do me in for display space in 1/8 scale. -
I assembled the front suspension per the instructions, then cut the axle pins off. I then sat the model on a piece of glass and propped it up with a piece of sprue under the oil pan so it sat right, put a drop of 5 minute epoxy on the wheel backs, and slid 'em into place, holding them in position until the epoxy sat up. I know thats pretty low-tech, but hey, it works! Lol! On the rear I cut the springs and filed the control arms until it sat low enough. I sanded the bumper seam and applied BMF to the edges only. Hope this helps.

Ok, here's a couple of mine.....did this one a few years ago. This is the Monogram kit, built pro-touring..... And this is the AMT kit, built as a street machine..... The 70 Chevelle is a beautiful car. I prefer the Monogram kit, but both kits are ok in my opinion. I had it in the back of my head to build a factory stock 70 Chevelle.....fully loaded, with A/C and all. Maybe soon! Lol! I DO like to see 'em built as 70's era street machines, though.

Whatever you did, change it back! I don't like the way the replies to posts are shown now, where you can't simply scroll down to view them, you have to click on each reply. Man, thats annoying!

Assistive technology in model building
roadhawg replied to Art Anderson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm with ya, man. First, "an editorial" is just a fancy name for "an opinion", so whatever he says is nothing more than what he thinks....its not right, its not wrong, its just his opinion. I see nothing at all wrong with a judge using a magnifier visor. We use 'em to build, right? Saying its unfair is almost like saying judges shouldn't wear glasses when viewing models! I haven't seen the article, I doubt I ever will. I'm not sure if Mr. Haught's opinion is very important anyway. I commend you, for standing up for what you believe. -
Happy 4th everyone, and happy birthday to George's sister.

How many of us are there?
roadhawg replied to Scott Colmer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)

How many of us are there?
roadhawg replied to Scott Colmer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
How many in the WORLD???? The world is a pretty big place. There's what, over 6 billion peeps worldwide? If only one tenth of one percent (.01%) were model builders, that would be 100,000.....30-40K seems low to me. We're talking U.S., South America, Asia, Japan........I'd guess maybe 80,000. -
Michael Jackson dead at 50
roadhawg replied to Custom Hearse's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I hate to bring this topic back from the dead (pun intended), but I swear I remember a few years ago MJ was buying up a bunch of cryogenic stuff and claimed he was going to be frozen when he died. Anybody else remember that? Maybe I'm finally ready for the loony bin.
