I set my alarm for 5AM as I am heading out early this morning. It is now 4AM and I am wide awake with nothing to do. Models and bag are packed, cameras ready, cooler bag waiting. Wait, maybe I'll build a model car

This is a photo I took in 2002 of a factory 300SL from the MB museum...you can check the eyebrows for yourself and draw your own conclusions. -
Tamiya Mercedes 300SL Announced, new pics added to OP
Howard Cohen replied to martinfan5's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I picked this kit up today and it may be the best new kit I have seen this century The quality of the mold is excellent, right down to the window winders on the vent windows, perfectly molded tires with the correct tread, chrome that look period correctand not over-chromed, great wheels with finned brake drums, the belly pan is frosted clear, overall, 10/10! The Predicta Project
Howard Cohen replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
FYI...the Predicta project is more than 10 years old. He is taking longer to write the story than it took Darryl to build the car -
"I didn't know that." AMC Pacer
Howard Cohen replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They were different looking cars. I worked at an AMC dealer back in the mid 70s and got to drive a few of them. They were spacious and drove okay but were underpowered, needed a big V8 I didn't watch the video but one problem we had was the rear windows blowing out on a hot sunny day. If the temperature went over 90F, we had to go and open the windows on all the Pacers or the heat buildup would be too much for the goldfish bowl and we would hear 'BANG'! Then we had to clean up the glass and get a new rear window installed. It got to be expensive. We also had a lot of customers who came in with the rear window blown out. Mechanically, they were not too good, lots of little problems, like leaking rocker cover gaskets, wiper linkages with bad bushings, worn out window regulators due to the over sized windows, hatch hinges and door hinges. But, the owners loved them, they didn't let the repairs ruin their day. I think if AMC had installed a V8, they would have sold better. I wonder what a modern retro Pacer would look like -
I have 3 vehicles ready for the show, in various classes. Thursday dinner will probably be with the Maritimers, provided they can get through the snow by then. I have dinner planned for Friday with some friends I only see once or twice a year, followed by a small gathering at the Ramada. Saturday I have a few parts to pick up and then look at one or two (thousand) models. And to finish the weekend, I have a drag racing show in Hamilton, Ontario, starting at 9AM Sunday, if I am not too tired to drive back 450 miles at Midnight. Oh, Monday I have a trade show...maybe I can sleep in Tuesday

Only a few days to go until this show. I hope to see some of you there. If you are into models of all types and you like vintage war planes, this is the place to be. -
1 - what brand of paint are you using? 2 - did you mix paint brands? 3 - is the paint mis-labeled? Maybe you have dull coat instead of gloss. 4 - how long between coats? 5 - you may be able to give it a light sanding and then another coat of gloss rather than start over.

First Look 2015 Detroit Cobo Autorama/Autorama Extreme
Howard Cohen replied to tim boyd's topic in Contests and Shows
I had a pretty good look at the cars and I think the Dart is the best of the bunch, in my humble opinion...and 50 plus years of car shows The owner told me the only stock parts on the Dart are the door hinges...everything else has been modified, cut or reshaped from wheelbase to roof. And yet, when you look at it, it is done so smoothly you almost can't tell. The 57 Plymouth is my second choice, like the Dart, because it is a most unusual subject and extremely well done and the colour is perfect! I had a good look at the Foose 65 and as I walked around it, it looked out of proportion from some angles. The Foose name will carry some votes for it. One thing against it may be the fact that it is from Canada and a car from Canada won last year. Oh, I'm from Canada, eh -

Steve - I had to be back in Toronto Friday, so I did the show on Thursday, missed a few cars John - I don't think you can get to Detroit from Cambellford...there is an invisible line just south of the Chrysler dealer at the provincial park R.Scott - a shorter version? I didn't even take photos of all the cars Greg - get cutting -
I was at the show Thursday during set up and took a few photos, just over a thousand I would have taken more but I got tired after being there from 9AM to about 6:30 Not only do these people spend years building a car, then they spend another 20-30 hours polishing it again...and again...and again Enjoy... http://public.fotki.com/howardcohen/detroit-autorama-2015/

Favorite #11-style blade
Howard Cohen replied to Don Sikora II's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For the past 35 years I have been using stainless steel surgical blades. They are about half the thickness and twice as sharp as X-acto or Excel or any other hobby blade on the market. I use them for BMF and when they finally start to dull, I can cut plastic with them. FYI...I used to use 1 X-acto blade to foil a car and then throw it away. With the surgical blade I can do 4 or 5 cars before it gets dull. It cuts cleaner, finer and more precise. The only downside is when I slip and cut myself...but it's a clean cut and heals quickly
