Uncertain T
Howard Cohen replied to Howard Cohen's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Being part of a show rod group, I heard a story about why the car was retired and why the kit cannot be re-issued (the molds were destroyed). I was talking to a resin caster who is thinking about casting the kit in very limited quantities and I have a standing order but it may not happen. Sometimes the lore is better than the reality -
I just picked up the April issue and I was pleased to see an article about the Uncertain T by Tim Boyd. I am having trouble understanding the article as it seems to leave off in the middle, like a page or two were left out. Tim? Is there more to follow? Or is this an April Fool's prank Tim, had I known you were writing the article, I would have sent you a couple of photos of my Uncertain T and the trophy I won with it. For those who weren't building model cars in 1966, Monogram had a contest just for the Uncertain T at hobby shops around the continent. I entered the contest at my local hobby shop in Montreal, Westmount Hobbies, and a few weeks later, I was awarded the trophy. I have no idea how many entries there were or if I was the only one, but now, 45 years later, I still have my Uncertain T and its trophy, and I am still proud of it. The accompanying photos show the model in 1966 as I held it (my Mom took the photos) and a more recent shot including the box. I did rebuild the car about 1986 as it was damaged from moving and I painted it the same colour as I did in 1966, but a little better No, it is not for sale or trade nor will it be donated to any museum. I plan to be buried with it...eat your hearts out

2012 Billetproof North (Detroit-Ypsilanti) Coverage -
Howard Cohen replied to tim boyd's topic in Contests and Shows
Very nice shots, Thanks. 1 - your heading says 2012...forward thinking or tired fingers 2 - since you mentioned the Hudson dealership, are there any photos of it anywhere in your stash? -
Randy makes it look like a snap kit, so easy to assemble, all you need is 5 years of spare time and a few dozen engineering degrees. Thanks for the great shots!

GREAT photos! I saw a few Canadians there that I know, Dave, Steve, Rod, Dennis, and I know they brought some killer models along (Steve is such a perfectionist). I may have to start saving my pennies to make a trip out there in 2 years. If I get enough saved, maybe I'll buy a plane like you did...that's not your personal plane in the photo? Oh... Did you manage to drive to the Salt Flats? That's my ultimate summer dream, 2 weeks during time trials. Did the awards make you arm pain go away? Nicely done!!! Thanks for the photos... Oh, I added a few comments

I saw Randy's sprint car under construction at Toledo a couple of years ago and it was amazing to see the workmanship in it! I am not surprised at the outcome. He also talked about the amount of research that he was putting into it. I hope he brought the album with all the drawings and measurements. That album could win an award itself.

Although I don't build like that, I am always in awe of those who do. Thanks for the link.

Ross Gibson engines
Howard Cohen replied to majel's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have done a few of Ross' motors and they are very good. I'm not saying that just because he's a friend...they really are good! Detail Master has a colour online catalogue so you can see what each motor looks like when complete. I put a McGee motor in my street Fiat Topolino many years ago. -
Hey Lui - show some of your projects and bring them to the next meeting. The theme is topless...not you, the car

...reasons why we never seem to get that model built...there is always something, isn't there... ...I found a tape of the lost episode of Batman! ...my car ran out of gas on the way to buy paint! ...my wife gave me a new honey-do list! ...my dog ate the kit! ...my cat ate the kit! ...my kid ate the kit! ...I super-glued my fingers together...again! ...I spilled beer on the instruction sheet! ...my girlfriend dropped by while my wife was away! ...I dropped a part on the shag carpet, bent over to look for it, and wrenched my back! ...I was playing with the grandkids when one of them stepped on the body! ...as I was spraying paint, the sheriff entered and arrested me for using hazardous materials! ...the neighbour's kid stole all my aerosols and sprayed graffiti on the police station and I got arrested! ...I lost control of my car on the way to the hobby shop and got arrested. Who knew you couldn't sand body filler while driving! ...I farted and the smell knocked me out! ...the cat coughed up a furball on my fresh paint...I ain't touchin' it! ...my boss called and after 7 years of being on layoff, I finally got called back to work! On my way to NNL East, I was working in the Ottawa, Ontario region, so I took a few pics of the Rideau River. I drove through the Adirondack Mountains and took a few more photos there, including a hot rod shop in Malone, NY. Then there are my NNL East model photos and my stash. I am surprised that with all the law enforcement vehicles there, I was the only one who brought a box of donuts to display If you have never been to NNL East, and you get the chance, go. Even if you don't do any shopping, seeing the models and talking with the gang all weekend is worth the drive. The gathering Friday evening in the lobby was really interesting and I think it's a great place to visit (wait until you see the Transtar). Thanks to all who have posted their photos. There is no way you can see every model when you are there as the models keep coming and coming and coming and the many photos shared is great!!! http://public.fotki.com/HowardCohen/nnl-east-2011/

I thought only Nascar drivers drove in circles for hours I had no trouble finding the place and I drove in from Canada For next year we need more people in the lobby on Friday evening...there was about 25 of us checking out the new Transtar truck kit and gabbing...and we were sober

Revell looked at making the motorcycles as parts packs about a decade ago, as well as some of the figures they had in the diecast kits (Bullitt, American Graffiti, etc). The response from the major distributors was so poor, they dropped the idea. I know, you would all buy 10, all 100 of you...that totals 1000 packs, not near enough to pay for cleaning the tooling. If 1000 people each bought 10, that might do it. Remember that the limited editions from Model King and others were usually small runs. Even the Double Dragster kit was a small run. Unless the major distributors buy into a program, the model companies are skeptical about it selling

how to make a lathe.
Howard Cohen replied to prostockmodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Why would you want to make a lathe when buying a proper one is probably much less expensive and safer? It would be like buying a car one piece at a time...the sum of the parts far exceeds the cost of the whole. Check your local surplus stores... -

Here are the photos I took at Performance World Custom Car Show in Toronto... http://public.fotki.com/howardcohen/performance-world-2011/ ...and the Detroit Autorama... http://public.fotki.com/howardcohen/detroit-autorama-2011/ I took lots of photos during set up so the cars may not be in full display mode but seeing the cars during set up is more fun for me.

There was a problem renting the old facility in that the new site manager would not give us a confirmation of the date until some time in May and we couldn't wait that long to set up the event. In the past we were given our date in February. The extra 3 months wait would not have been feasible. The new site is only 2K off the 401, easy to find and affordable
