Lacquer thinner in Phoenix, AX
Dave Ambrose replied to Pete J.'s topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Some air quality regulations require it. Acetone is not considered a Volitile Organic Compound as they do not want to make enemies of the female population. In point of fact it is. People around here seem to buy theirs in Nevada where it consists mostly of toluene and xylene. -
We have indefinite storage for photos. Our primary disk is YUUUUUUUGE and is only 20% full. My database disk is another story, but I'll spare you that saga. I like the idea of only putting a handful of pictures in a post. If you do quote a post, delete the pictures you aren't responding to. That will make everything more understandable to other people reading it, and relieve us tablet users from having to scroll three miles down a thread to read all the responses. The selector goes by number of posts, not length.

Brief outage earlier
Dave Ambrose replied to bobthehobbyguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That’s the way I usually feel about it. This is not directly from a site attack, but it probably didn’t help either. -
Outage (again)
Dave Ambrose replied to Dave Ambrose's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sadly no. We have a major software update that may address that problem, but I have to iron out a couple other things first. -
Outage (again)

Thanks. The maintenance went very smoothly. With the recent database problems, a table got very very big, and needed some surgery. You shouldn't experience any changes. -
I'll be taking the board offline so we can correct some problems. I'll try to do this later tonight, but if it gets supercritical, I'll take it down earlier.

That would be a Freudian typo. Sadly, we just had another one. I'll be taking the board offline for some repairs hopefully later this week. -
Whooo-eee! Now we got some GOOD eatin'
Dave Ambrose replied to smhardesty's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Finding Eley .22 ammo was very hard for a while. -

I tried to access the site, and got the error. We had a corrupted database table. Fixed that and everything seems to be working. -
New guy from Madison Wisconsin
Dave Ambrose replied to TKO Exacutioner's topic in Welcome! Introduce Yourself
Welcome, Justin. My dad grew up in Madison. It's a nice city. I too am a slow builder. We probably have more than a few slow build threads around. What matters is that you're having fun. -
Better to be over the hill, than under the hill.

Can you identify this car?
Dave Ambrose replied to ROY FERGUSON's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If the headamps are any indication, it's French. -
Mousey mousey?

Do You Get Fixated On One Type Of Car?
Dave Ambrose replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's probably totally normal. People have different styles. I've been building more hot rods lately, but I tend to jump around between subjects; cars, sci-fi, submarines, and even the occasional airplane. -
I'm sure some of you have noticed, but the board is sometimes slow. I think I finally found the cause. Someone was trying to break into the parent site, and consuming 10s of GB worth of bandwidth. I've blocked them from accessing the site. This was coming from a hosting company in Dominica, so I don't think we'll be losing any users. We should see performance improve, at least until they find another attack vector.

I tried using Future for that, and it didn't work all that well. It does work well for photo etch. My current go-to is Micro Crystal Clear glue for winscreens and canopies.

The First Air Force One, Flying Again...

Beautiful. -
My daughter's boyfriend called my wife and I "giant nerds" because we have more than one astronomical telescope. He doesn't know the half of it yet. But yes, in no particular order: Astronomy nerd. Celestial mechanics if you must know. Computer nerd; this keeps the bills paid. Gun and reloading nerd SCUBA nerd Surfer Rocket nerd, but I've retired. Building models seems downright normal.

Alternate ways to view the board
Dave Ambrose replied to Bowtienutz's topic in How To Use This Board
When you're in the unread content section, click on Content Type at the top and select Topics. That will get you the topics that have changed and not the individual postings. I like it better that way too. -
How Old Are You
Dave Ambrose replied to iamsuperdan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think you're pretty close to the mark with your "fountain of youth" comment. I'm almost 63. People who only know me over the phone are surprised by that. I seem a bit too chipper for someone my age. I blame model building for that. -
Have we lost the poll feature again ?
Dave Ambrose replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
OK, just needed to make sure you weren't running into another problem we encountered. Older monitors, and narrow windows get styled for mobile, which doesn't necessarily have all the options the desktop version has. We probably need to do an online meeting some evening so I can see what you see. Please send me a PM. -
Have we lost the poll feature again ?
Dave Ambrose replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Greg, what is your screen resolution? Are you by chance, using an old monitor and/or computer? Normal procedure is to pick your forum and click the Start New Topic button. That will open a page that looks like this. Click the above circled Poll tab, and you should get a page that looks like this: -
There seems to be something about the size of the post that upsets it. Next time it does that, send me a PM with the time. We're still trying to find the root cause. Thanks, Dave Ambrose
