Adding to this-I looked at my old Garlits version and saw that the front of the frame where the front axle attaches is different on the YA version. It's narrower on the YA to accomodate the different style front axle.

Which clear coat for Tamiya spray paints?
ZTony8 replied to Raypa's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The non one coat One Coat clear is also an excellent choice. It won't harm decals. BTW-I wonder if all the different Testor lacquer clears aren't all the same formula in cans with different labels? -

Buy 1 get 1 free @ Meijers
ZTony8 replied to sstacey47's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The first Meijer I went to had the "Buy 2 get 1 free" tag.The next one I hit had the "Buy 1 get 1 free" deal. There was a two day coupon for $4 dollars off any purchase of $19.97 or more so I got a '49 Mercury and a '62 Impala for what came to $9 each plus tax. -
whats your model building resolution for 2013
ZTony8 replied to Lownslow's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
1)To finish more than the one model I finished this year. 2)To increase my model building skills. You'd think after building off and on for more than 50 years I'd have caught on to more but it hasn't happened yet.Slow learner I guess. 3)To re-organize the model cave.It needs a paint rack change and some shelving moved around (to facilitate storage for more kits!). 4) To have my wish to see NNL East fulfilled. Our club is talking about a group trip there.I hope we can make it happen. -
Nascar Craftsman Trucks - Eldora Speedway on DIRT 20132
ZTony8 replied to hooterville75's topic in WIP: NASCAR
I'm a little surprised that this is going to happen. It's a good idea but the teams now have to construct a special truck to run only at this one track. That costs money and the teams frequently complain about expenses like this one. Most truck series teams are small and low budget so it creates a financial burden on them. -
$425,000,000! What would you do?
ZTony8 replied to Terry Sumner's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Since I'm 58 and most likely wouldn't live to see all the money if I took it on the 30 year annuity I'd be forced to take the lump sum(which is a bit over $196 million dollars after taxes here in Michigan),darn it.Going on that premise I would: 1)Park most of the money (about $150 million or so of the winnings)in interest bearing accounts that would yield at least 3 to 4% per year. After a year or two I'd then live off the interest. 2) Take the rest and pay off bills for myself,my daughter and some friends and family.I'd fix up my house to sell, buy another place to live and then I'd begin to enjoy life by: 3) Building a first class slot car center on the east side of Metro Detroit. There are 3 on the west side but there are plenty of guys who don't want to travel that far to race.Think along the lines of the old American Raceways places of the 60s and add a drag strip to it. 4) Buying a big plot of land and pave it so the local autocrossers can have a permanently available place to run each Sunday.Erect a top quality facility there with plumbing and lavatory facilities and lighting to be able to run at night if necessary.Add a grandstand so spectators don't have to stand to watch the action. We'll call the place Pylon Park. 5)Buy all the old cars I've wanted and an old warehouse or factory in which to store them.If you local Detroit guys ever saw Dick Kughn's old Carail place you know what I'm talking about but it would be about 10 times the size of Carail.maybe even Jay Leno facilities sized. 6)I'd dabble in some investment grade styrene : ) and find my grail kits. 7)Donate to select charities, probably anonymously. -
Since it's still a relatively large but roundish car I'd suggest a medium to dark metallic color-something like the old Testor Kiln Red or a dark metallic green. If you want to go the opposite way try a pale yellow-something like Model Master Phoenician Yellow.

NEW REVELL '29/ OLD AMT '29 mashup, Nov.8, buggy spring mods
ZTony8 replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I think it has a nice stance the way it presently sits. But if you raise the front portion of the hood you might want to lower the rear of the body so the side profile doesn't take on the shape of a banana. -
Cool cars your grandparents owned
ZTony8 replied to Fat Brian's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My maternal grandparents had a Paige touring when they lived in Nebraska in the twenties. They sold it sometime before my Mom was born in Michigan in 1927 and never owned a car after that.Mom never got a ride in a car until my eldest aunt's fiance took the family members around in his 1934 Buick rumble seat equipped coupe. My paternal grandfather had motorcycles as a young man in Florida around the time of World War One.I recall him telling me about owning a Flying Merkle,a Henderson and a Reading-Standard.The first car I remember him having was a light green 1950 Buick Super six window sedan.I never got a ride in it or the dark green 1953 Special he had after that. My Dad had a series of now desireable Buicks around the time he and Mom dated and married. He owned a gray 1947 Super convertible and then a 2 toned green 1951 Roadmaster 4 door sedan(with 1952 chrome fins added) that they took on their honeymoon.According to Mom after that he got a new 1953 Roadmaster.I came along and he backtracked to a 1949 Super 4 door, sold that and then we got a used 1957 Special wagon. He was promoted to service manager at a local Buick dealer and he took aqua 1961 and 1962 LeSabre 4 door hardtops as his company cars. After he took off and my Mom divorced him he had a '63 Electra sedan,a '65 Electra sedan with wife number two and owned a '62 Chevy Bel Air hardtop and a '65 Buick Skylark as his lunchbucket cars.He ended up with personal Cadillacs after becoming service manager at a Cadillac dealer but never got a demo from the Caddy dealer. -
A friend and I were having a discussion about the accuracy of the MPC '68 Indy turbine car.I know that years ago someone made a transkit for it.Who made it and what did the transkit contain?

Issue dates of Tamyia 1/20 F1 kits
ZTony8 replied to 604_driver's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Sometimes when the kits are reissued there will be a new kit number assigned.Usually this is when some detail of the kit is changed or added.Also- check the price. This is the 4 digit number next to the kit number. It's the price in yen.The lower the price, the older the kit. -
Need advice on Tamiya 1/20 Formula1 builds
ZTony8 replied to 604_driver's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
It depends on how adept you are with painting and decaling. If you're not too adept, avoid the Williams and the Lotus.Instead, start with the McLaren, the Braun or the Jordan. -
I have a few builds in the entertainment center in my den,a few more in boxes in a couple of drawered plastic containers, and a few more in boxes on top of a spare desk in my basement.I have builds that used to be in my bedroom in the house where I grew up that are now in in 3 coolant boxes, wrapped in newspaper and plastic packed when I moved in 1987 to where I live now.As for my 1100 or so unbuilts I have no idea where they'll go.I don't plan on selling any of my builds-I don't build well enough that anyone has expressed an interest in any of them.

What Do You Think was the Worst Car Made?
ZTony8 replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My vote goes to the early 80s GM E body cars(Riviera,Toronado). They leaked EVERYTHING! A story-Back in the early 80s I was still working at the Buick dealership where I started my parts career.I recall back then that one entire side of the shop was usually filled with Rivieras partly disassembled to fix fluid leaks(oil from the rear main seal and oil pan gasket, coolant from the head gaskets on the 4.1 v-6 engine, and trans fluid from the drive chain cover and transmission pan. This wasn't taking into account the cars in for air and moisture leaks at the door and window weatherstrips).During that era one of the things that was pushed was for new car sales prospects to be given a tour of the dealership to show off the facilities. The new car sales manager happened by the parts desk so I asked him how the sales staff dealt with a prospective Riviera buyer who might see the wonderful shop display of their desired car in various states of disassembly. He just said that he hoped the prospects didn't notice anything as they were quickly escorted on their tour. -
What would mean more to you
ZTony8 replied to martinfan5's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's a toss-up.On one hand,it's a definite thrill to know your model was seen to be unique in some way and will be seen by thousands of people when looking at a picture in a magazine. It's also a thrill to have your efforts judged to be outstanding compared to other modeler's efforts either by people's choice (as in an NNL) or from being judged in direct competition. One way isn't better than the other, they're just different. -
Ferrari fans art or blasphamy
ZTony8 replied to IHSS's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Those body panels are from a 330/365 GTC which IMHO is one one of the nicest looking Ferraris ever designed. -
I never drank, smoked,or any of that other nonsense but I still can't stay up way too late anymore, especially to do an extended model project. If I DO try it it becomes counter productive. My attention span goes to hell and I start messing up the model project. Then the next day my thought processes are so sluggish it feels like I'm mentally wading through muck. This getting older business isn't for the faint of heart!

The oldest build of mine that I have is an AMT '64 Mercury convertible.Originally painted in combination of red and orange metalflake(done by holding one can of each color in my two hands and spraying them simultaneously)I repainted it(badly) in green Pactra metalflake(directly over the red/orange,no sanding.I was 10,what did I know?)and hand painted the interior in Testor's yellow enamel. That's how it exists today.I'm often tempted to strip it and re-do it but, like some for others here,it's an example of my old time model building and I hesitate to alter it even as bad as it looks. I also have some old builds from a collection I got from a friend of mine. The oldest there are a '60 Ford pickup(with trailer) and an original issue '60 Ford Starliner.

Revell / Monogram '32 ford kits
ZTony8 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To me they're all about equal, even the Speedwagon which to me is only a good kit for either parts or for aftermarket body usage. -
When I worked at a Buick dealer a few years ago we had several Rendezvous(s)(plural?) come in filled with water in the light panel on the rear gate.We determined that the panels were replaced because the customers didn't pay for the Aquarium Option.

A "Rivet Counter" speaks up!
ZTony8 replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Different people coming up with different dimensions for the same part(s)?That speaks to a lack of skill and/or care, not being designed in a different era. An inch is an inch. -

ZTony8 replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I can maybe accept the idea of slightly tweaking lines and shapes to fool the eye. What I can't fathom is how the kit designers can get sizes so wrong for a given scale.Case in point-the engine in the AMT '37 Chevy,'51 Chevy, and '60 Chevy pickup. It's the same Stovebolt 6 in all the vehicles but these kits have 3 distinctly different sized sets of pieces. Why?
