this kit was built by a friend of mine that, a, has no patience, and b, hasn't built a model in close to 20 years. built box stock with a little twist on the color...he wanted a personal touch. the color is HOK Galaxy Gray (iirc) b/c with a custom mixed HOK kandy with HOK SG100 w/gold interference pearl over all of that. the wheels are the stock chrome with Tamiya Smoke airbrushed over that until color desired was achieved (hard to photograph) and the chrome lip was cleaned with a q-tip & alcohol. ...on with the pics

here's another project that i'm working on... its the new-ish 49 merc kit from revell. it is built box stop...with plug wires added. chassis is HOK Orion Silver B/C with HOK Cobalt Blue Kandy. the engine is Tamiya Gold, carbs ar cobalt blue kandy directly over the chrome. the seats/interior is tamiya flat white w/tamiya flat blue inserts and silver thread for piping. the body is drying as we speak...once i wetsand and polish a few dirt specks out, it will be posted here... ...on to the pics. thank you for looking...hope you enjoyed your stay

so, here's a small update... progress has been slow and a bit of block has kicked in. but, slow progress is still progress. the side doors are hinged, hung, and in place. the interior tub has been cut to clear the engine. the engine has been mocked up to see what's needed. here's a few pics to show the engine placement and one showing the interior tub without the body blocking it. the seats are next. I'm thinking about using leather. on with the pics...enjoy!

this isn't the only time it happened. i bought a 1/20 scale mpc van at the same swat meet (different years). i got home, opened it up, and there was a revell baha bandito vw van...with the red glass (no box, but it had instructions, decals, and all the pieces). i love going to swap meets. the munchies comment had me laughing. here's a small update for today (so far)... i got one of the hinges for the side doors completed and the interior tub cut for the rear door assembly. i also removed the "dog house" from the interior tub as it will no longer be needed (no picture of that). i hope to build a nice center console for it. here's a pic of the rear door open and the interior tub and a pic of one of the side doors hinged (2 down, 3 to go)
-
thanks again for the comments. it means a lot to me! here's a few pics with the rear door hinged (taped for mock up purposes) i still have to make the hinges for the side doors. the paint scheme has been floating around in my head, but we'll see how it goes. thanks again for looking

i have a question that i pose to all those that enter/run a model contest(s)... What class/category should one put a model in? I built the revell '49 merc, the revell '66 chevelle station wagon, and the revell dodge ram vts pickup kits and they were built pretty much box stock...except for the paint job. so, my question is to get some input as to what classes they should be in. do i put them in box stock? do i put them in street stock? would the merc go in street rod/hot rod? i really am confused as to what i should enter them as. i've never competed in a 1:1 car show, and maybe that's a hinderence in my case as far s the classification...maybe not. any and all help is greatly appreciated. edit: added pics of mentioned models an case it might help.

thanks for comments/compliments to those that replied. the wheel/tire combo that i you see was used because i wanted a big/little set and that was all i had in that category. i went through some of the wheels i have and i think i like this setup better. let me know what you guys think. i plan on putting a viper engine in it mid-engine. the from seats will prolly be wrapped in leather. the rear doors were opened as one door and will open upwards, like a hatchback style. the side doors will open traditionally...like saloon doors. oh, btw, this is my first chopped top and section. these wheels are hopppin' hydros slim 20's Shokks
-
forgot to add that the chop is approx. 4" in scale & the section is approx. 3" in scale

here's a model that I've been working on off & on lately. It started out as an MPC Truckin' USA West Coast van From what I can tell, this is not a reissue (not sure if there was ever a reissue of this kit). From what I believe, this kit is from 1974/1975ish. I bought it at a swap meet a few years ago, got home, opened the box, and found 2 complete kits in the one box. Well, lets see what I've done so far shall we? 1st pic is the stock body. 2nd pic is the chopped & sectioned body. 3rd pic is the two bodies back to back for comparrison. 4th pic is the mock up of the stance. I still have a lot of work to do on this thing. Hopefully I will get it done before I move on to another project or kit.

How To Make Opening & Functional Doors, Hoods, and Trunks
fatkidd replied to nwmud's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
i looked through your thread and i see the jambs... but i guess i'm too dense to look at a pic and figure it out. i don't necessarily need someone to "hold my hand along the way", i just need someone to show me a step by step so my little brain can understand. haha -
How To Make Opening & Functional Doors, Hoods, and Trunks
fatkidd replied to nwmud's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
there have been a few how to's on here and elsewhere on the net regarding opening and hinging doors. i've got that part down fairly well. my question is... can someone do a how to for doing the actual door jambs? i know how to add thickness to the door and door panel, i'm just insure about doing the actual door jambs. do i actually "join" the interior tub and the body? or do i make it appear that way? could someone out there in the modeling world help me out? thanks in advance for any help -
use the intercoat clear before and after masking...meaning, spray your b/c white, let it flash for 10-15 minutes (assuming that you are using HOK b/c), spray your intercoat clear (sg100), let if flash for 20-30 minutes, mask off the areas to paint, laet flash for about 20 minutes, remove masking, spray intercoat clear again. the intercaot clear will help prevent the tape from pulling up your b/c and will help "cover" the tape lines and aid in your final clear being smoother. This is the process that I have gone by for many years and it's worked. hopefully, this helps you out and points you in the right direction

thanks chuck and brian. the color doesn't really show up too well from the pics, but i'll try and get better ones. chuck, the screen name is a nickname that was given to me many years ago. i'm overweight (have been pretty much all my life) and i'm a kid at heart.

so i finished another kit for the year...i think i'm at 2 for the year so far. i guess i'd better slow down before i get outta hand. it is pretty much box stock except for paint and aluminum hubcaps on the front and aluminum "salt flat discs" on the rear. paint is as follows: interior - House of Kolor Pavo Purple b/c, HOK Chrome Yellow b/c, engine is Tamiya Gold Leaf, Carbs are HOK Purple Kandy over the kit chrome. exterior - DuPont Hot Hues Amazing Grape b/c with HOK Purple Kandy and HOK Chrome Yellow b/c with Interference Gold Pearl mixed in HOK SG100 and Nason SelectClear for the clear coat. Thanks for looking...hope you enjoy. p.s. I will get a better shot of the completed model this week to post...last picture was taken at the Sunshine State NNL (in conjunction with the Billetproof show in Gainesville, FL on 02/27/2010) and here is a close up picture of the hubcap, which was made on a friend's lathe

wow! thanks to all who commented. I've been a bit busy with my livlihood this week and it has been overcast, so no new pics...sorry. diymirage - i argued with myself for a while regarding that very issue. i guess the inner voices won...oh well. thanks again folks.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Glad you like it. I'll try and get some better pictures in the next few days or so...if the weather cooperates. It is a multi-layer process. I'll try and do a "how to" but I'm not good at the "explanation" part of it. haha. The biggest part, for me at least, is to have PLENTY of reference pictures.

I finished this model back in October and finally took some pics of it (although they aren't the best). It is a box stock (except for the paint). The interior is all Tamiya semi-gloss black. There is no engine in it since I plan on using it for another project. This was my 1st attempt at doing true fire on something this size. It came out o.k. I'm not 100% happy with it, but that's how I am. Thanks for looking.

would the head of a straight pin be the correct diameter? cut the head off of the pin, file the back flat and glue in place. just a thought off the top of my head
