Porsche tractor with HRM 917 engine as puller. Mod the Fergie into an 8N with nice SBF DOHC, Gurney Weslake heads, or a nice Cosworth Friend has an 8N with a hot Merc flatty, trick heads, I forget which, and a cool vintage puller look. Can't find a pic of his, buried in cell. Then there's this 8N with a turbine. Found a puller that's got a Scot on it, more crazy than my friend's

Chrome platers and resin - revisited
keyser replied to Hawk312's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Good to know. I'd not sent parts in a long time, and I have another huge pile. The CT stuff did have some thick/orange-peeled clear. I'll try Kustom Khrome. I'll prep parts forever, mounting them to get great coverage and quality isn't my gig. Can they do copper, brass, or zinc finishes on plastic?? A few projects need some weird stuff. -

Chrome platers and resin - revisited

Who did Modelhaus chrome? Little Motor Kar, or Chrome Tech? Once the backorders done, they should have capacity for a ton. And their resing plating was pretty good overall. I've used Bob/Chrome Tech and was happy. Was huge order, and I hate mounting. Prob 2-3 pieces out of 300 were less than perfect, which is pretty awesome. Not particularly cheap, I forget what it was. I'm interested in the new guys too. -
Geez, Tim, I remember getting that issue new. Agree about grille. Now I remember why I like these things so much, and collected Daytona Transports long before re-issue. Christian, is that a Deora under the cab? I like to spot parts for ideas. Going nuts over grille. BTW, awesome builds in the case, some hiding

Found the same pic as everyone has seen, but found some more recent ideas for the chase car, pretty much all of which can be built easily.

Upside Bob is you can claim Brad and Norm as dependents

Steve, that's great looking first version paint. Stick a Nailhead in it and crank it out. Paint envy.

These things follow me home. Now I have more ideas. Boat is cool. Dying for a big turbine exhaust out the back transom. Sports car hard to see, but looks like C2 roof? Dave, that's a nice stock build with the Ford. Had a green HW, wanted to do it as my Ford powered one. Awesome build from Coffin Corner. Paint from 2nd version with side-oiler. Paul Burke build http://www.showrods.com/gallery_pages/silhouette.html

I remember your buggy idea, sounded cool with some mudders or Desert Dawgs on the back. Roadster is cool, tons of parts to mess with. Plan for me is to show it and an XR6 together. Frame and suspension is quite cool, could do a track car out of it too. Resin JDM 4 or 6, slammed and cambered, thought crossed my mind too. -
Bill, that's a fun bash. Like the scoops from Grandpa's Coffin, a 240Z/300F nose on a Crate with C4 windshield and uptop. 57 Bird hood?? Where'd the wheels come from? Look like Halibrands crossed with Budd truck wheels. Have a Hess van and a couple other project that need those. Silhouette is fun kit. Needs a Buick nail head for original version, the later version had a big block Ford IIRC. I'm using the Buick out of a '40 Ford IIRC Wonder if re-issue will have several colors of glass hopefully

Tom, I didn't mean the tools were off the books, as R2 has to service the purchase debt. You did better job at fleshing that out than I tried. Guess the main point was an unused tool is just scrap unless you run plastic thru it, and worn/neglected/fragmented tools aren't much better. Investment and rehab on a tool is less than a new tool, and since Tomy et al had no idea what they had, I'd guess they priced it commensurately. Older tools generate ready cash flow, dead tools revived can bring nostalgia and drop some of the idiotic prices for some collector kits. 63-64 Galaxies, 64 Marauder, 65 Lincoln were presumed long gone, and they made it back, survivng some of the awful dirt racer fates of others. Those conversions were destructive, limiting issue to a niche rather than a broader market. The oldest of boomers is retiring and drawing on their 401k's this year, Bloomberg has article today about same. Hard to believe, but 50 years ago was 1967. Lots of the re-issues were from then, the vintage box art from late 60's, the Barris kits, the Zingers all were great kits then, and nice to have now. I never did Daniel cars or Zingers as a kid, but I have a liking for Daniel stuff far more now. I'd paid collectors prices for original kits, and hunted builders. RM reissues filled a hole in my collection. Doubt your Valiants will be back, or my Renwal 66's, but the manufacturers are doing a nice job. The boat kits, Papa truck, all are niche, and can get extra runs if need be. The more profit they make, the more able they are to do new tools. Moebius' Ford trucks, the Bronco, the 300, are only a few, and I expect more to come from R2 soon. +1000 on the interviews with Tim, Dave, some of the other guys here. I enjoy the business end of the hobby, just as I enjoy the business end of 1:1 cars. Interesting thread Art started, being lost is ok, this is very esoteric stuff. Some great info in here for the 0.001%

80/kit, pull the tires, sell them for 20, then sell kit for 60. He'll make millions! -

Get 3 kits, can build Surf Hearse, Surf Woody, and Surf Roadster. All cool, woody and roadster the best. Those round headest looking things are actually speakers, one at either end of tube. Colors look pretty good, beige with copper-ish vacuplating. So 60's. -

Hi Art. Some here know the business of kit production, and how the market has changed. I understand the business pretty well, and as you noted, using the tool bank and existing resources keeps the lights on and the molding machines busy, while pumping profit, since tool has been amortized and depreciated in most cases. Plus, some great old kits that are new to buyers that aren't eBay/show/fleamarket hunters are made available. Always funny that noobs come here to post about a kit that is a reissue, but brand new to them. Some complain, want a new tool. I want the businesses around, not just the tools. Good efforts by companies have been sunk by lack of sales, or over-engineering (AM, others). The want lists of lame cars that pop up are hysterical. People would pass on a 1:1 priced at new retail of a kit for many of these dogs. Same people won't buy resin, despite not that much more expensive. Your Black Widow and 59 Biscuit were the only games in town, as were the 300's, MGB/GT, Don's 59 Brougham,...25-30 years later, we have only a few of the list kitted. Always funny when people post faceplant memes, etc. when business case brought up. You've put numbers on it, so can't dispute it. I'd like to see the split of Sci-fi to cars with Round 2, Happy New Years Art. Come south to see the doc again. L

Round 2 January 2017 Product Spotlight
keyser replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
They probably mold them and ship bagged kits to be reboxed there. It's not cost effective to ship tools at huge cost when you can send thousands of kits in a single container with minimal risk if it falls off a ship. I'm sure they did same thing with all the US kits before, and the few GRev kits that come our way (Golf, Beetle, Ferraris). The price mostly reflects small volume sent, and shipping kits, reboxiing with expensive EU labor, and shipping back, plus exchange. -

IIRC, the front end is from the SVT Lightning. These trucks had same running gear as that truck, correct me if needed, Tim. The recent HD trucks didn't have special powerplants I don't believe. Still see these here in TX, along with Blackwoods. Cool kit, found mine the other day
