1979 Ford F150 Flareside 4x4
Modlbldr replied to Atmobil's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That looks like a fine project. Hot Wheels can be a good source of inspiration. I really need to pick up a couple of these Fords. I'll be watching. Later- -
I got this body in a trade a while back and liked the idea that the guy (sorry, I can't remember who) started. It's not quite the Avalanche body style but the idea is there. Hence, the quotes around Avalanche in the title. I got my new bench up in the house and started playing around with this one. I'll have to make a complete custom suspension for it. I just fixed a slight defect in the body. He had made the driver's side a hair over 1/32 longer from the door back, creating a slight warp in the body. Anywho..... just tossing around ideas for now. Let me know what you think. Later-

Very nice builds. The paintwork on the Tbird is perfect and I enjoyed watching your build of the Vette. Since seeing what you did on the Vette I have been eyeing that kit on the hobby shop shelf. I may just have to pick one up and build it. Later-

Thanks. This whole build is going to be from parts and pieces. I was given the chopped cab. The fenders were separate but I liked the look of them on the cab. I'm not sure what I am going to do for a bed and rear fenders. If you have any ideas, I'm open. Later-

Thanks for the comments guys. Yeah, due to the long and narrow engine bay I needed something longer than an I-6 and narrower than a V-8. I spent a bit more time this afternoon working on cleaning up the motor and extending the valve cover. Later-

I've been tossing the idea of this one around for a while. Combined two 50 Ford straight sixes to make an inline 8. Not sure where it will head from here. Let me know what you think. Later-

Man, that is looking real good! I like the work you are doing. Keep it up. Later- -
Nice builds, all three. You sure have mastered the art of weathering to make them look so realistic. Fantastic work! Later-

That body color is fantastic. Looks a lot like the early 70's KJ6 (I believe) Avocado Gold. I have been wanting to do a body in that color. Now I know exactly what I need to replicate it! Thanks. Later-

Thanks for the comments. I didn't choose this color. My buddy had painted it. He used HOK paints, . The pearl effect in it is amazing! The pearl causes the paint to change from green to pink along with the yellow. There are better pics of the color change in the WIP thread here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/108281-96-rx-7/ Later-

Just finished this one up. I was given a painted body a few years ago by my buddy and I finally got around to finishing it up. Added various decals without going overboard. I didn't have the headlight buckets with the body so I made headlight covers and painted them. The body also did not include the mirrors, so I tried to match the paint as close as I could on them and the wing. I had to lower the front suspension a bit. Later-

Well, here it is. My third completed build for the year. I had to lower the front suspension a bit to get it to sit right. I looked around the kits I have on hand here but couldn't find a decent US plate, so I had to go with the kit plate. Posting it in Under Glass Later-

Nice start on this. It's looking good. We had a 78 4x4 F250 Super Cab Camper Special when I was growing up. It had the exact oposite paint layout. Center was the cream color. Later- -
Thanks for the replies. Yes, I'm sure the front will need some adjustments. Going to get after it this morning. Later-

Got the racing harnesses done. Next step is to install the interior and finish up. Should have this buttoned up by Monday. Later-

That looks perfect. Nice work. I have to get me at least one of those cabs. Later- -
Nice looking builds, Clayton. That three day build was a lot of fun. I just went back last week and lowered the front suspension on my bright green Vette Agin. Looks much better now. I managed to finish two also, but I got a lot of progress done on a few more. Maybe 2016 will be a banner year for me. Later-

Here is the interior up to this point. The seats and roll bar are not glued in yet. I started to try doing some 5 point harnesses but I don't have what I need. I'll have to order a couple from somewhere so I can get it finished. Later-

Great looking build. I like the details in the interior. Where did you get the racing harnesses? I need to get some for a couple of builds. Later-- 16 replies

Got the wheels glued on this morning. Now I'm thinking that I should have painted the inside of the wheels. Not sure why they were not done at the factory since the outside was. This is just with the body sitting on the chassis for mock up. I need to make sure that the front sits lower. I had to make the headlight covers out of clear plastic and paint them black because I never got any headlight buckets with the body, so it is just empty under there. I am going to try today to make my own 5-point racing harnesses for the seats out of pop can aluminum. It won't need to be too detailed due to the fact that you won't be able to see much on the inside.....I hope. See what I mean about the inner side of the wheels? Fine for a shelf model but I don't like it. This last shot shows a bit of the green tint, especially if you zoom in on the hood. Later-

It's all HOK but unsure of what colors. I think the main color is Sunset pearl. I'll have to ask Mike. It's cool because in the sunlight it changes from bright orange to pinkish to a slight green under the orange. Later-

Once I get it completed I'll take some shots outside in the sunlight. This paint job has some funky green and pink undertones. Later-

This is the next one on the list to finish. My Buddy Mike Flynn gave me this painted body ages ago and I have been slowly plugging away at it. Just have the 5 point harnesses to do and I can get all of the sub assemblies put together. I finished the rear taillights today. Later-
