Well, all the difficult body work is done. Dismantle the manky header assembly and redo it right. -

MPC 1/16 '63 Corvette Stingray "SuperVette"
lordairgtar replied to ImpalaBoy's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I had that kit, but in a silver plastic. I had acquired a pair extra of tail lamps from somewhere and I made a six tail light version from the song "Dead Man's Curve" -
20 to 22 awg size wire for plug wires and 18 to 16 awg for battery cables...see, not so hard. Stainless bare wire of 22awg can be used as fuel and brake lines.

Rommel's Rod sells for $ 1 million +
lordairgtar replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Those are not Swastikas on the Rommel Rod. The headlamp covers are Iron Crosses which date pre WWI and the other markings are just armed force markings of Germany. The kit never had Swastika markings. -
I'm happy this is coming out. I really liked those kits growing up.

Vega vertical delivery - pictures
lordairgtar replied to SSNJim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When I was a teen, my dad took me down to the yards to see this new rail car that the Milwaukee Road was going to get a fleet of. It was the Vega transporter. My dad worked for the CMStP&P RR, then the Soo Line later. -
Got a Tom Daniel Ice T kit today at a flea market for $20. Kit says made in US, but the instructions say packed in New Zealand. Any body know anything about this?

Still gonna call Norm the father of the T Bucket. I think he used the chopped up touring because it was handy, and because he was a big boy and he would not have been comfortable in a standard roadster. I don't think bucket referred to a body style per se, but that bucket was a common term for an older car. That particular car became iconic as a bucket T because of film and TV use. Norm starred in a few of the eponymous beach films of the day including Out Of Sight as a henchman called Huh! That film also featured a Barris car called the ZZR.

I Drove a Maserati Yesterday
lordairgtar replied to cartpix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Have to disagree. I live in a semi rural area where tractors pulling hay wagons or other equipment is common, as well as the ever present Illinoian pulling his massive boat to his cabin on the Petenwell Flowage or The Dells. I own a car that can do about 120 mph. You actually need the extra power and speed to pass the tractors or tourists safely on a twisty two lane highway when the opportunity occurs. A car that can only reach 65 or 70 mph is already near its peak power and it would take longer for it to overtake the slower car assuming slower car/tractor/motorhome is doing 45 to 50 in a 55 zone. BTW, I was driving on the Edens Expressway last night and was crisscrossed passed by two idiots racing a couple of JDM type cars. Scared the bejeezus out of me and I was doing 80. This was about 11:30 PM -
NASCAR vs other race series
lordairgtar replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Part of NASCAR racing's excitement is from seeing three or four cars go at high speeds side by side. This is not something that works well on most road courses from the (NASCAR) fan's point of view. I watched a bit of the Elkhart race (Been there, drove on it) and it seemed these drivers were not used to a track that narrow (as most road courses are, they resemble two lane highways) and did not get the speeds seen on a super speedway. Drivers at Bathurst are acclimated to it and you can see in Waltrip's facial expressions that that is true. Love Aussie racing. -
Will GM's problems ever end?
lordairgtar replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not justifying putting cheaply made parts in automobiles, but had not Ralph Nadar come up with exaggerated claims of bad handling Corvairs in the older swing axle (which was soon changed to a better design, but Nadar kept harping on it), the corporate culture may not have developed as it has regarding keeping quite about crappy unsafe bits or keeping quite about same. Also GM changed the design quite aways back on the ignition switch, but never changed it's part number which would be much like a company changing a print spec and not adding a new rev number alerting the production team of the change. Now GM has to eat that cost in the recall by having to change perfectly good ignition switches because they do not know which are bad and which are good. My 2010 GM car may have a perfectly fine part, but you would never know unless one took apart the switch to see inside...so I get a new switch for my trucklet whether it needs it or not. -

No plastic 2014 Stingray kits? Could it be?
lordairgtar replied to Len Geisler's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
So, in your opinion, what would be an "American Sports Car" be like...or what would it have that the Corvettes do not? That seems to be an ethereal thing. American Sports cars ran the gamut from Mercer Raceabouts and Stutz Bearcats to Kaiser Darrins to 55,56,57 T-Birds to Muntz Jets to AMC AMXs. Might even consider an Excalibur a sports car if bought in the two seater configuration. How about a Studebaker Avanti? -
Cruising rummage sales yesterday and I came across a Paasche VL airbrush set for $10. It followed me home. Now I have to actually learn to use it. It's a nice double action set with all the accessories; hoses, jars, and other parts. No idea what they cost new, but he wanted $15 for it and I offered the $10. Beets the Aztec set I got burned on that I paid $50 for that was useless.

Addiction and Recovery
lordairgtar replied to jbwelda's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Since I solder small circuitry at work all day, I'm used to having my head stuck to a mag light. I don't think I could build models with out it. -
I meant to type 340. Thanks everyone. I can deal with holes in the block with plastic and putty. It seems that the 66 Riv engine is a nail head, but the ZZR engines seem to have the same look. Because the detail on the ZZR engines are so muddy, it's hard to nail it down. Plus the exhaust ports seem equidistant from each other on the ZZR where as the 66 Riv engine (425 cid) are not. ZZR 0 0 0 0, 66 Riv 0 0 0 0. The 69 engine is obviously too new. I'm of the opinion that the engines are related to the same engine that was in my 64 LeSabre, which had a 300. The wiki sited earlier says that the 340 was a stroked version of the 300. Any kit ever have the 215, 300, or 340 small block?

I am refurbing a gluebomb ZZR (the only way I could afford one) The kit engines are barely detailed blobs that vaguely resemble Buick Engines. Very few pics of the car are online. Articles I have read allude to the engines being 430s. Car was built by Barris in around 1965 0r 66. It was featured in the film "Out Of Sight", which came out in 1966. Are there any kits that might have better detailed examples of those engines? Thanks. I thought they were 300 cid engines at first.
