AMT Ecto 1A to be re-released?
Chuck Most replied to The Creative Explorer's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
That's one area I didn't fix on this one- for me, the area just behind the headlights on the fenders was the most distracting feature. -
What do you drive?

Same planet where the fourth-gen's interior layout makes any sense at all. To be fair, a Camaro is a bit easier to get in and out of than a Mustang if it's a T-top model and the T-tops are out at the moment. But only then. -
Well, AITM sells something close- http://www.aitruckmodels.com/pages/ck130dodgels1000.html

I think somebody is doing an LTV 1000 resin transkit now.

Just because we can:Car to truck conversion.

I've had this one collecting dust for a couple of years . It's the old 1989 AMT Ecto 1a kit, with a widened El Camino roof. The interior tub is the Ecto part cut down just behind the seat, and I'm leaving it a cubside. I'd originaly planned to use it as a hauler for a Revell Midget. The Midget will fit in the cargo bed, but I overlooked the one minor little detail of the Midget being too wide to fit through the tailgate. -
AMT Ecto 1A to be re-released?

Biggest improvement you can make (appearance-wise) to this kit is to install the grille/bumper from a Monogram '59. The white strip visible between the bottom edge of the hood and the top of the grille will fill in the gap resulting from using the Monogram grille on the AMT body. The blacked-out area behind the headlight bezels shouldn't be kept chrome- that's a common area overlooked by most people who build '59 Caddy kits. Here's how it looks before the remaining chrome is masked off, and the area is blended into the fender. Here's how it looks blended into the body. -
If you ask me, the carbs are a major selling point for the kit. VERY nicely done, and well molded. There might be some ejector pin marks on them, but if there are, they're faint on mine.

That is correct. Actually, the fenders, doors, and tailgate never rusted too badly, but the tubs and roof rotted out so fast it was scary. Love the way this one came out. -
Love it!

I have mixed feelings about this- after seeing this, I'm chomping at the bit to get going at my shed diorama, but at the same time I know it won't be nearly as cool as this is shaping up to be.

Just wondering... does the Convertible kit have the non-W30 front bumper? I'm looking for a standard Cutlass bumper for an upcoming project.

The Cabriolet was reissued as late as 1987, so I'd guess the tooling still exists. That reissue was a bit rough in spots due to wear on the tool, and I doubt 25 years of sitting in a warehouse has done it much good- might be why Round2 has not announced anything with it. I'm hoping it didn't get lost in the shuffle when production facilities were moved to Mexico, then China... that would REALLY suck, as that Cabriolet is actually a pretty nice kit. And remember, this is a FORD guy talking! No there never was a real Vampire Van- it was a pure flight of fancy from an MPC designer named Bill DuPuy, same guy who did the Jolly Roger. It's called 'The Twilight Effect'.

It has a somewhat glossy finish- but I'd reccomend against using it because it does not stick very well, and seems more prone to tearing than plain BMF.

Expired contract
Chuck Most replied to sportandmiah's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Contract? Are you sure it's expired? There might be a snag or two hidden in that fine print... -
Oh... I've learned the ins and outs of working with separate door handles and wipers. Just isn't something I want to concern myself with if I don't have to.
-
Then go through all the 'fun' of removing any mold lines/sprue attachments from those separate handles and wipers. Oh... and that is after you manage not to break and/or lose them in the process of getting them off the sprue. I only have two gripes about this kit, and both are minor. I wish the box were just a little bit bigger- the way things sit now, the box is a little bit 'crammed', and both the 300s I've bought have had a few parts knocked off the sprues. Nothing broken or ruined as a result, but I think the quarters are still a bit too tight in there! The second is the front plate mount, or rather, the molded-open locator holes for it in the bumper- I wish they'd flashed over them instead of leaving them open. Doesn't look like it will be a fun fix if you choose not to use the front plate. They did it on the Flock version, why not the factory stock version? Other than that, I'm really impressed with the kit. I almost hate to say it, but I think they pole-vaulted past the Hornet kit in terms of quality... and this is coming from a guy who likes Hudsons way more than Mopars. The Motor Wheel wires are especially tasty, and I can see that Hemi stuffed into a few other applications besides the intended one.

AMT Ecto 1A to be re-released?
Chuck Most replied to The Creative Explorer's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Yes... Round 2 doesn't remove their sidewall lettering. I've got the original '89 version of the kit, now sporting a widened El Camino roof. It was going to be a hauler for a Revell Midget (as the cargo bed has room to spare), but I overlooked the one minor detail of the Midget being too wide to fit through the tailgate. Oh well...
