Why the variety in scales?
sjordan2 replied to aurfalien's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I might add that Bburago scales are like a box of chocolates. Based on factory measurements, the supposedly 1:18 Bugatti T59 is closer to 1:15-14. It appears that Bburago Classic diecasts, from the Bugattis to the Alfas to the Mercedes SSK, are scaled so that the one-size-fits-all wire wheels can be used for any of them. And some people here who build smaller kits have mentioned that some companies fudge scale a bit so they can fit in existing box sizes. -
Why the variety in scales?
sjordan2 replied to aurfalien's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The thing is, like many other kits such as the XK-120 from Monogram, the Bburago main body shell is the only part that's metal; all other parts are plastic including classic fenders, so it's a personal definition as to whether or not it's a plastic kit or a metal kit. But there's a lot more metal in a Hubley classic kit. -
Why the variety in scales?

It strikes me that the difference between 1:24 US and 1:25 European kits may have something to do with scale conversions vis-a-vis our measurement system and the metric system. -

I have a few 1/18 kit versions of Bburago diecasts, such as the Bugatti T59 and Alfa Zagato 1750. Tamiya has also made several 1/18 race car kits. Some of Bburago's 1/18 kits, like the XK-E, have been co-branded with Testors. -
1901 Berlin tram
sjordan2 replied to Harry P.'s topic in WIP: All The Rest: Motorcycles, Aviation, Military, Sci-Fi, Figures
I managed to track down the original tram (triebwagen 40) at www.tramdepot14.de Evidently photographed at one point in its life with some sort of cow catcher. You probably already found it, but I thought there might be some cues there for a base. -
1961 Ferrari 156 "Sharknose" - Phil Hill's F1 World Championship Car

Nobody does this kind of stuff like you do. I don't know how you achieve such detail at such a small scale. Looking forward to your Bugatti T35. -
Outstanding job on a great American design!

I also Googled '70s Kia, but nothing came up that looked like this car.

Another great one.

I have a couple of first issues of Johan's Gold Cup kit of the Mercedes 500K Special Roadster Limousine, which has outstanding chrome, even perfectly done on the excellent wire wheels. The reissue (not identified as Gold Cup) is terrible, with incomplete chrome coverage over red plastic, and lots of flash.

How did we manage to survive?
sjordan2 replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As I mentioned above, just because we survived doesn't mean everyone else did. Bike helmets In North Carolina, where bicycle helmets are compulsory for children, the North Carolina Department of Transportation published a fact sheet stating that a bicyclist is killed or injured approximately every six hours and that helmets reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85% and the risk of brain injury by as much as 88%.[40] The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2006, 773 bicyclists were killed in the US. In a speech arguing for helmet legislation in the UK Parliament, an MP said: "In a three-year period from 2003, 17,786 children aged 14 and under were admitted to NHS hospitals in England because of injuries incurred while cycling"[41] Seat Belts In a series of papers utilizing a large sample of parental reports of injuries among children aged 4-7, belt-positioning booster seats (the dominant form of child safety seat for this age group) have been found to reduce significant injuries by approximately 60% relative to seat belts Dangers of Riding in a Truck Bed Most states don’t view riding in a the back of a truck as an especially dangerous activity that must be discouraged. For example, violation of North Carolina’s law is only an infraction with a maximum fine of $25. However, many people have died in accidents because they were riding in a truck bed. Last year, Alabama’s Representative Kerry Rich introduced a bill to prohibit people under the age of 19 from riding in the back of a pickup truck after a fatal accident killed four people sitting in the back of a pickup truck. The law faced opposition and did not pass. So, while it may be legal for adults and certain children to ride in a truck bed, be sure to do so safely. If you’ve been in an accident while riding in a truck bed and were injured, consult with an experienced personal injury attorney for help. - See more at: http://blogs.findlaw.com/law_and_life/2015/06/is-it-legal-to-ride-in-the-back-of-a-truck.html#sthash.DdUYfe1H.dpuf -
Lincoln Futura Interior color
sjordan2 replied to gtx6970's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The interior doesn't look anything close to white to me. I'd say it's a medium/light gray with a dark charcoal (not pure black). -

Just because I survived all those ill-advised practices doesn't mean that there weren't kids who didn't survive. -
Film: Nine Days in Summer (1967 F1)
sjordan2 replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My only experience of attending F1 races in person was at the French and British races in 1968. I was surprised at how high-pitched and bee-like the engines sounded. And yes, they were dangerous -- at the French Grand Prix, Jo Schlesser spun out past the curve where I was standing, rolled up a hill and burst into flames, killing himself and some spectators. Fortunately, most of the scene except for the flames and smoke was obscured from my sight by trees, so I didn't know exactly what was happening at the moment. But you don't want to know what the smell was like; it involved more than burning fuel and auto parts. EDIT... Evidently, his Honda was a brand-new car with lots of magnesium parts including the chassis, which was largely responsible for it burning so quickly. The car was first offered to Surtees, who turned it down because he thought it was too dangerous. -
I did the exact same 1950s fiberglass sports car and it didn't turn up for me.

What kit is it, made by whom?

A little additional reference material. http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z1727/Lincoln-Futura-Concept.aspx https://theinvisibleagent.wordpress.com/2010/01/23/the-lincoln-futura-concept-car-1955/

The Danbury and Franklin cars are also excellent assembly kit donors. There is no affordable kit of the Bugatti Atlantic -- only a very rudimentary kit version of the Bburago diecast -- but the Franklin Bugatti Atalante T57 SC has an awesome chassis/engine/interior setup and has the exact same wheelbase. Shouldn't be hard to put the Bburago Atlantic body on it, or swap parts depending on which source you want to go with.

Any thoughts about getting a mother of pearl insert from scale motorcars.com for the center gauge cluster? -
Fotki or Photobucket?
sjordan2 replied to Oldmodelmaker's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Usually, it's not a problem of running out of bandwidth, though it occasionally is. In most cases, it's because the original PB link was deleted or moved (thereby changing the link), perhaps refiled in another album. As Harry mentioned, he's been using free PB with a large amount of material for over 20 ears and no problems. -
Any thoughts about making the windscreen hinged at the top so it can vent at the bottom?

Nobody said you can't have both. Try them and see what works best for you.
