Vintage Electric - What's your opinion?

The raked trunk at the bottom shot doesn't seem pleasing to me. When you look at the curves at the top of the door molding and the bottom of the sedanca top, the progression to the trunk doesn't look right.

Does anyone see any inspiration from the Svedka Vodka robot babe and this movie?

Tamiya Mercedes 300SL Announced, new pics added to OP

Do you have any pictures of what the strawberry red looks like on the car or even a plastic spoon? I ask this because I could use it for larger scale versions. Having reviewed the 1/24 Tamiya kit with its extraordinary detail, there is no way I can build this small kit with my skills or even suggest doable detailing options (though the interior can easily be accurized). My only real quibbles are the absence of rear deck luggage tie-down rails and the very faint trunk lid scoring, making it very hard to open the trunk and add more of the car's unique elements. Otherwise, there's never been a better Gullwing kit, and I have almost all of them. One question -- what do you mean by SWB? Short wheelbase? No such thing on a Gullwing. -
Just beautiful. I love these cars. A couple of years ago, I saw a line of several of them at Pebble Beach and couldn't believe how many there were. I think there's a company in England that makes replicas.

Looking fabulous, like a 1:1 in a restoration shop.

All your added detail really paid off. It gives the model a more "substantial" look than what others have done with this kit.
-
Can you post some brighter pictures that make this easier to see?
-
Extremely nice. What is the paint brand and color?
-
PS....I'd really like to see your process for putting mesh on the headlights. I haven't yet figured out how to avoid adhesive smears.

My breath is abated waiting to see the finish.

I'll join in with the hallelujah chorus. I don't know how you and so many of our members can do such amazing work in 1/24-25.

Looks terrific! The tire color and front wheel camber make it look very real. -
Quite nice. Is this a kit?

No offense, but through all my communications with Harry, he knows every nut-and-bolt detail about this car....and chooses to go his own way as he feels it I don't know what you're adding here. The "fully disappearing top" is a Riley, not a Jag Plus, your other link shows the factory prototype -- the only one with "the Leaper" radiator mascot that came from the factory (also known as the Prince William) Harry has hundreds of reference shots. I know, because I gave them to him.

The tie-down hardware on the gas tank is very nice. Your extra touches that you haven't mentioned include the wires from the tail lights to the tank and a proper breather coil on the top right of the tank. Killer.

Quote from VRM: "Tyres are no-name, but the tread pattern is really close to a Dunlop R5 (which was not available until '57 or '58 I think). Almost all Gullwings were originally equipped with Continentals, though some did have Dunlops." Yes, that's right. According to the Adler book and the factory-published "Faszination 300 SL" book: Standard tires were 6.70x15 Continental or Englebert, front and rear Optional tires were 6.50x15 Extra Super-Sport or racing tires Wheel rims 5.50x15 -

Follow-up: Over the years, I've had occasional contact with the parts manager at the Mercedes factory's Classic Center in California. Like their counterpart in Germany, they supply everything from vintage parts to complete restorations. Today I sent him the following e-mail... "Hi, Tom. It's been a long time since I bugged you, but I and many in the car model community are very excited about what looks like the best Gullwing model ever, just released by Tamiya. The question that arises is the provenance of Gullwing chrome wheels. I know the first Gullwing was introduced in New York with chrome wheels, and a recent all-aluminum car was sold at auction with "original chrome wheels," but were chrome wheels ever offered as an option or as a special-order request to Mercedes? Enquiring minds want to know if Mercedes ever supplied chrome Gullwing wheels." His reply: "Absolutely. Both the Gullwing and Roadster could be ordered with chrome wheels. There’s a separate part number for them in the parts catalogues. Same for bolt-on and rudge wheels." -

I have sent a question on this matter to the parts manager at the factory classic center in Irvine, CA. Regardless of the provenance, there are still dozens of Gullwings with chrome wheels, and a modeler can feel confident in using them, along with any other modifications that they would have ordered. -

Paul Newman, Winning, a Documentary Film
sjordan2 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Haven't seen that one, though it has the same title as his fictional film. The greatest racing documentary (or even fictional film ) is without question ""Senna." -
The top one is the kit I have. I think the subject of this thread is 1/35.

I've never found a definitive answer to the chrome wheel issue, and it's not listed among options in my reference material. However, the first production W198 Gullwing was unveiled at a New York show sporting chrome wheels, and an aluminum Gullwing sold recently at auction for over $4.5 million, described as having the original chrome wheels. But a purchaser could order the car any way they wanted (on a few occasions, Mercedes executives were known to advise purchasers against certain paint colors). As for whitewalls, one of the early design pencil sketches showed them. -
Here's a good tutorial on the subject by an accomplished Ferrari modeler. Many other good tutorials there as well. http://www.italianhorses.net/Tutorials/Window%20Masks/masks.htm You may want to spend some time looking around his website -- www.italianhorses.net Here's how he built a Tamiya F40... http://italianhorses.net/Gallery/Tamiya/TamF40Stradale/F40.htm
