I guess the hard work paid off...
Ryan S. replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Congrats Andy, that Camaro came out real nice! -
Wow, very smooth!

I live by SF and they had the bridge closed for a few days a couple of months back so they could re-configure the toll plaza and approach ramp up the incline so they could continue work on the new bridge they're building. I suspect that this was filmed at that time. No way would they close the bridge just to film this guy regardless of how cool it is. The streets and traffic would have been pretty light due to the bridge closure too so it really would have been a good time to shoot this.

Looking good so far Mark. Nice job on the wood trim.

What a cool hot rod. Looks really good in yellow. Interesting idea with the underslung chassis, I've never seen that before.

Just a little update on this one. Body work has been giving me fits so I can only do a little at a time and not get frustrated. I decided to go with blacked out spokes on the rims so I painted them with a gloss black lacquer. I then masked them centers off and sprayed the lip with Spaz Stix mirror chrome. It's not so much chrome as it is a polished aluminum, but I think it works really well in this application. I plan on drilling out the center caps and putting on some that are polished metal made from some small nail heads that were rounded. I picked out a color as well if I ever get to the point of painting. I'm going to use Spaz Stix candy red metallic. Should make it really pop. I hope to have more progress soon. Thanks for hanging in there with me on this one.

Oh my gosh, an update! I've been putting some more work in on this one as I'd like to see it finished. I've built up the Caddy motor and I think it looks right at home in the '55 engine bay. It doesn't look too small. Wheels and tires are detailed. I used the drum-brakes and wheel backs from the '60 Starliner. The wood bed is in and the top of the rails are foiled. I've still got to put some cross supports under it and foil the bottom as well. Chassis is painted gloss black lacquer, the wheels aren't glued in place yet. I've still got to finish the body work but once that's done and painted the rest should all fall in place. Thanks for looking!

Suggestions on painting an interior tub?
Ryan S. replied to foxbat426's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Something I've thought about doing in the past, but haven't actually tried yet would be to carefully cut the sides of the tub off so that you can paint everything easier, just like parts come in a lot of kits these days. You'd have to be very careful and do a lot of test fitting and perhaps even add a little plastic back before gluing it back together in order to have it fit properly in the body but might be worthwhile to preserve the detailing and get better coverage. -
Nothing wrong with this one to my eyes. Nice treatment on the rims and two-tone!

Aluminum Willys Coupe: finished pictures posted 8/2/12
Ryan S. replied to John Teresi's topic in WIP: Model Cars
You pick some wild subjects, John. This is one bad Willys. I can't wait to see what you do to get this one like the pics. Awesome choice. -
Cruz, your building style and techniques are nothing short of inspirational and this Impala is no exception. I keep re-reading the magazine article because it's that good. Thanks for posting some more pics of this one!

Metallics are tough because the flake is suspended in the paint. You can sand but you need to go very light and only do what is needed in as small an area as possible. A brief recoat of the sanded area would probably be a good idea too before continuing on with the color coat. I've never cleared over BMF, but you should be able to. I would always test a sample on a piece of scrap plastic first with your paint and clear of choice just to make sure you don't have any adverse reactions.

Here's our haul from this past weekend. Some new micro drill bits, assorted paints including some semi-gloss black, paid full price for the special edition 62, the 32 was marked only $13 at Hobby town so couldn't pass that one up as my girl friend wants to build it, got the 62 SS at Michaels for 40% off because the box was open, but everything was in it in sealed bags, the 39 Chevy I got at a flea market for $3- couldn't pass up that deal either, also got Donn's DVD which is fantastic-can't wait to put the method to the test!

I really like the paint and color combo. The Merc makes a pretty mean looking dragger!

how often do you pay full price for kits?
Ryan S. replied to Ryan S.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had a feeling these were the responses that would be here. With the price of kits going up, I wonder if a small part of that is due to retailers getting less than full price for them. I realize there are a lot of contributing factors to pricing a kit; new tool development, cost of productions, shipping and fuel costs, marketing etc. But if say, 75% of kits that are priced at $25, sell for 40% off, it kind of makes sense to raise the price too, to get a little more from the discount buyers. Its all relative these days too. Just like most other things, the price goes up and we have to try to get the most for our money. -
Something I was thinking about recently after picking up a 62 Impala kit this weekend at Hobby Town and paying full price for it. I realized this is the first time in a long time I've done this. With 40 and 50% off cupons readily available for places like michaels and hobby lobby it's easy to get good deals. So, how likely are you to buy a kit at full price?

Wow, there's some pretty colors in that line!

Back to the Future date ?
Ryan S. replied to 1930fordpickup's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Someone is trolling the internet with the faked pic from BTTF. Here's a link to info about it. Wiki is right with the "real" date coming in 2015. http://mashable.com/2012/06/27/back-to-the-future-hoax/
