That's a great looking model. The black roof and WWs set it off - a little variation from the norm. Great work all around - clean building, great paint. Goes to show how a clean, well built model is all you need.

Nightmare Kits CBP - aka Masochistic Modelers Anonymous
Erik Smith replied to Jantrix's topic in Community Builds
I like this - lots of cutting and hacking going on in this thread. It's like a relief from the worries of screwing up a decent kit! Here is what the Porsche supplies for a seat/interior: I am trying to use some parts from the original Arii kit - but they suck so bad, I just can't. So...I am making my own interior... I knew I kept all those airplane parts around for some reason. Some sanding and it should clean up fine. Underside: Minor work - but it took me most of my evening -
The TR-3 is pretty basic kit. Looks good enough - curbside. Here: http://www.percongrp.com/pelikan/autos/tr3a-1_ms.htm

Awesome deal on the Fiat - I've been on the lookout for a reasonably priced one - so far, no luck.

Why do people do these things?
Erik Smith replied to mnwildpunk's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You could literally write an endless book on what people do and trying to explain it. Some people are just not right - whether it's from nature or nurture or both, they just don't function in a society. I had somebody vandalizing things and set off a bomb in front of my house. I still don't know who or why. It just started, then stopped. Idiots, imbeciles, however you want to label them. Fortunately, most of humanity doesn't act this way - we just don't always notice good deeds because they often go unseen. -
I like that. Cool concept and execution. I like the wheels - the slight set back on the discs really set them off well. Really cool roof rack, too. The Baron could slide his surf board up there and head to the, uh, well, drive around with a surf board. Nice work.

Jack Handy - I love Deep Thoughts! To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kinda scary. I've wondered where this started, and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus and a clown killed my dad. Zach Galifianakis: You know you have a drinking problem when the bartender knows your name -- and you've never been to that bar before. At what age do you think it's appropriate to tell a highway it's adopted? My girlfriend looks a little like Charlize Theron...and a lot like Patrick Ewing. My New Year's resolution was to stop saying "you go girl" to myself

I have never used Humbrol paints, but hear nothing but good things about them. I noticed they have/are coming out with a series of washes, too. Enamel washes - which I think is unique, as most seem to be water clean up. HERE is the link -
Great looking model. I like the color and finish - smooth. The interior highlighting - or shading, or whatever - looks great too. Helps to pick out the textures on the seats and door panels. Nice detail work on the engine, too. Great work.

Oh - if k would have seen that figure set...too cool. I saw the car kits on the site but not that other one. A mom and child - first I've seen that (in model form).

STACY DAVID/REVELL MODEL KITS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Erik Smith replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Contests and Shows
It says you need to buy the kit - as posted by Dan above. However, I looked at the entry form and didn't see any place to enter receipt information. Might be required for winners - an after-the-fact verification. Really, why bother trying to cheat the rules? If you don't want to enter the contest, build the model you have already bought and put it on your shelf. If you want to join - buy one of the kits they are offering during the time slot allowed, build it, and enter. It's really simple. Again, as stated in my first post on the topic and repeated numerous times in other posts - this is a marketing effort from Revell. THE WHOLE POINT of this process is to increase sales. Do they want you to show off your skills? Sure, to a point. But, sad to say, they don't care that much. They want to sell models - to new builders, seasoned builders, to whoever might have $20. So, why beat a dead horse about "we need this kit in there" or "why do I have to buy another kit", look at from Revell's point - produce model kit, sell model kit, make money. In the long haul, the more money Revell makes on this endeavor, the more new tool kits we get from them. It's a win-win. Join another contest if you want to build any kit you want in your stash. -
Overall I like the design. It kind of looks like a transformer, though - a few sharper edges and the extra "vents" or black areas detract from what flow is there. As stated above, lets see it on the road - it's not the same evaluating a car in two dimensions. As far as copying - design cues have had similarities since chariots (and before). It's a bit of human nature thing called trends.

Been working on the Porsche gasser this weekend. No mid engine on this Porsche - so I cut open the hood. With the help of super glue and accelrator I made adjustments all across the Willys frame - shortened the middle section, shortened the back end, lengthened the front, moved the engine mounts and transmission support. Should line up better on the Porsche body now. -
I like it. Great vintage look. The colors are very fitting and I like the finish.

I use the citadel washes all the time. I have never seen the Vallejo brand and would like to know how the perform. I did find this: http://lascannonslances.blogspot.com/2010/08/great-vallejo-wash-review.html?m=1 -

But now the whiners are whining about the whiners who are whining whiners. What? I fully support everybody's right to voice an opinion. As stated before, I like the concept of the contest. One complaint? Make it global! -
What size drill bit for spark plug wires or boots?
Erik Smith replied to DWR's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
You can get a pin vise just about anywhere. Get a decent one though - the tiny bits are hard to hold if the chuck parts don't align well (the four metal parts that converge on the bit to hold it in place). X-acto and Tamiya both make nice ones. As far as diameter, what diameter wire are you replicating? In scale wiring usually looks a little to small to the eye (8mm wire scales out to .012 in - a number 80 drill bit is .0135). Also, don't go big - I have seen models with "garden hose" for wires and that distracts more than adds to the look. I prefer 77 or 76 (.018 or .020), but that's just me. -

Nice Ron. I think it's pretty interesting a little fun to get old build ups on eBay. I look forward to seeing the Rambler 6 too, I have a 770 promo I would like to add an engine. -

So...there is no kit of the 2012 Camaro SS, is there? -
Great review and additional contributions. I have never been that interested in this kit, but when I see a review like this, it makes me consider it. Looks like a nicely done kit from the heights of AMT's "era".

Nice work Bruce. I like that engine too - that's a lot of plug wire.
