Moebius 61 Cat
MrObsessive replied to yellowsportwagon's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Bill, this is one of the major reasons I harp on test fitting everything before one begins to paint. Some paint everything first which IMO is a BAD idea as you have no idea how things will go together as you get near the end. Even with that, there's still some surprises that can always show up. Saving your painting till the end to me minimizes any drama that's bound to occur with the build. -
Moebius 61 Cat
MrObsessive replied to yellowsportwagon's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I wrote a tutorial a while back on how to fix the glass and wheel issues with the Moebius '61 Pontiac. I can't answer about the front bumper. I had heard there were some issues getting it to fit. IIRC, it had something to do with interference of the firewall or something to that effect. Someone who's built it fully might be able to help out with that. -
When you've got REALLY nothing to do...........
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I have The Weather Channel app on my phone and as I was checking the weather, this showed up. I then wanted to see if it was on YouTube and there it was! There's a longer version of this out there where his friend did cut him out completely. Still, what if he had a 'friend' that was ticked off at him for whatever reason? He might have been there awhile! -
Estate Planning - all those models in the basement
MrObsessive replied to <profile removed>'s topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Travis our club did just that very thing. We were unfortunate to lose a couple members within six months of each other and we held an auction to raise money for the surviving wives. That way, it lessened the burden of them having to hassle with eBay for instance and they'll know the models are going to good homes. Tough to think about these things, but it's a reality. No one's here forever and in my case as I never married or had kids, I'm not sure who'll end up with the myriad of kits I have. I don't fret too much about it though..........at some point I'll be talking to a niece of mine who's very good at this sort of thing and go over with her what I'd like to have happen. She's going over her Grandmother's (my Mom) affairs as she's been quite stubborn to talk about such things with my sister or I. -
Just to be nosy.................. This could be six of one, or half a dozen of the other but rethinking this------it would be much easier IMO to rework the '70 front end than trying to get the '69's front end to play nice and match up so to speak. Less crazy making is much better in my book these days.

1974 Corvette Resto------Update! 12/31/18
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Rob, I try to get cases for each of them.........the Corvette will be no exception as I got a case for it a few weeks ago at the club meeting. It'll end up on the shelf such as here............ I have other places in my house that they'll go once I run out of room which is happening. As some know, I've got nosy cats and keeping them in cases and out of reach of them is an absolute MUST! This is in my model/build room where I keep the door shut unless I'm in there. I made the mistake of leaving the door open for only five minutes to get something downstairs------about five minutes later I heard something crashing and sure enough, one of the models was on the floor. No damage was done, but it's automatic for me to shut the door behind me when I leave the room. -
The problem though lies in those end caps. They're too 'flared up' which to my eyes gives it that surprised look. One could (if they have the patience and skill) redo that whole front end by perhaps cutting the entire nose off, reworking those end caps and grille (it's too tall) and then reattaching the whole works. At least that's the way I'd approach it. Without the other bodywork in the way (crown of the front of the fenders for instance), it would make it easier to take on this. I've seen some that had the grille painted correctly, I just can't get past the overall appearance.

1974 Corvette Resto------Update! 12/31/18
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Just for those wondering, this is what I use not only for polishing, but also to handle the model when it comes time for those final details. Nothing drives me crazier than to have fingerprints or worse yet, paint wearing away due to sweaty hands and the oils that are in your skin. Good 'ole chamois cloths which you can pick up at most auto parts places. -
1974 Corvette Resto------Update! 12/31/18

Since I've been off for the last several days for the holiday, no better time than to get this one caught up and 'bout done! Got 'er sitting up on all fours now. There's a bit of a wonky thing going on with the suspension. I didn't add or change anything 'cept for replacing parts that were either badly glue damaged, or flat out busted. It sits just a wee bit high and the wheels I had great difficulty in getting them 'squared', but then I'm comparing it to the pics that I took when I first got it. Looking at pics I have of the 1:1 on my hard disc, it sits about right and I'll just chalk that up to how the kit was originally engineered. We are talking about what's now 45 year old tooling (actually older than that as this I believe dates back to the late '60's). I'm waiting on new taillights from a seller on eBay as the original ones were just too glued up to be usable. I need to touch up just a little the areas surrounding the lights as I didn't paint that as heavily with the airbrush as I'd liked. Yes, I see the piece of BMF missing on the trailing edge of the drip rail. So, with some minor cosmetic things I'll do to the exterior and then making of an antenna for the rear, this one's all but done. This was not intended for any show, just a bit different direction I needed to go in with modeling as I was getting bogged down with focusing on one car for a bit too long. I haven't abandoned the Green Hornet BTW, just taking probably a long break from it. I liked doing this so much in fact, I've got another 'Vette that I'll be restoring------a Revell '68 427 Convertible. That one shouldn't be as much of a hassle as I originally built it and didn't use near as much glue as this one had on it! So the next time you'll see 'er Under Glass and then I can move on to the next one. -
Seeing your post Mike and looking at Len's original question makes me think that mixing and matching parts to correct that Monogram '70 Mustang Boss 302 using this new tool '69 Boss 302 front end is VERY doable, the scale differences notwithstanding. At least for me. It might involve some 'stretching' (or 'shrinking' depending on which kit you work with) of certain things, but it can be done. The Monogram '70 front end for instance never looked right to me. It looks like it was surprised by something with its "poppy eyed" appearance! At the moment though, I'm not of the ambition to attempt it. I can see exactly what needs to be changed and in what manner, just the time and wanting to do it now is a whole 'nuther matter.

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I've always thought that........the AMT one seems to be more 1/26 than 1/25 scale. Hmmm...........I'll have to think about that! While I'm not a fan of Rally wheels on this type of car, on the El Camino to my eyes they suit it just fine. The Chevelle to me looks better with the 'factory mag hubcaps' which I believe were still available for '68. Redlines on both are a MUST! Cars (and the El Camino) of this type look their best in '68 with a nice set of redlines. -
How'd I miss this one?? Absolutely gorgeous! And this reinforces what I've been saying about 3D printing! The sky's the limit of what can be done!
-
You jump through a Christmas tree netter! I got a real chuckle out of this!
-
Sad but true. I've just about given up on GM coming up with anything new and exciting. That's a whole 'nuther story for another thread.
-
Now THAT is impressive! At first glance I thought this was a real engine, but then I see where you BUILT this! Love the 3D printed items and one would be hard pressed to tell the difference if it was sitting in an engine bay. And yes, I've seen those Marushin engines on eBay. One auction I was following very recently with great interest, but when the price crossed the $1000 threshold, I said......that's too much! It eventually sold for $5300!!! Waaaaay too rich for my blood! Especially when there's no guarantee I'd ever build it!
-
Oooooh.......terrific save! I like it! This is another one I've had ever since it first debuted, but I've never done a thing with it! I'll have to give this one some serious thought when it comes time to do a truck..........something I haven't built in many years.

Very interesting and neat conversion! The other day at work I was talkin' to the day shift guy just before I left for vacation. He's a real car guy and we were talking about the demise of Pontiac and I had told him had they survived, we might have seen a new gen Firebird. GM's plans for Pontiac was for it to be a very low volume, high performance division. From what I saw of Pontiacs lineup for 2011 and beyond, I do believe that a new Firebird was in the works. What happened was GM was basically told (by the government) that if they wanted the bailout money, they had to get rid of Pontiac (along with Saturn). GM must have been desperate to get the money, so they ditched Pontiac and the rest is history. I'll be tuned in to see what you do with the conversion! I've always liked Pontiacs as I owned a couple in the past and all I can do is shake my head as to what might have been. Ok, off my soapbox now...........keep up the good work!

Working with photo etching
MrObsessive replied to American 185 Heavy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Here's a trick I picked up on years ago from I believe Larry Booth. Heat a candle and when the wax starts to liquify, dip a toothpick into the melted wax. The wax on the tip acts as a picker-upper and for really small stuff like letters or door locks for instance, it works well as tweezers can send those things flying! As far as what to attach it with, I've had good success with Tamiya clear acrylic, or Future Floor Wax. The only downside is those can contain alcohol which can hurt the surrounding finish if you're not careful. -
I have to agree with the others. Something like that is not for the faint of heart and it's something I have yet to try. The hardest thing would be stretching the body. You'd have to stretch it somewhere behind the doors to the leading edge of the wheelwells and that may require two kits if you want to keep the contours the same. As Snake said, the roof is a bit different but they share roof crowns. You'd have to rework the C pillars and probably have to 'stretch' it a bit too for four door proportions. I have a project in mind similar to yours.........it's just not high on my priority list at the moment. It's this car................ I'd go a bit further though.........I'm quite certain I've seen these with the 'Endura' nose and hidden headlights but without the GTO badging. A very rare special order option for sure, but one that would turn heads. That's way down the road though if ever I get the ambition to work on it. Just to tweak the purists I'd even slap on some redlines with Pontiac rally wheels and of course painted in my favorite color for '69------Verdoro Green.

Revell 69 Charger R/T vs. Revell Pro Modeler 69 Charger R/T
MrObsessive replied to crowe-t's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
So THAT was the difference between the boxes! I learned something new today.....I thought I heard someone say that there was a different box years ago, but they weren't specific. Now watch someone try to sell one of those 'sealed' kits in with the bad body on eBay. The uninitiated won't be the wiser sadly. I believe the wrong roof is what led to the delay of the Daytona kit initially and IIRC, Revell did replace the bodies for those that asked which was very good on their part.
