No, I sold my AMX (1992) looooong before I ever heard of or even knew what an NNL was. Hindsight of course being 20/20, I wish I could have held on to it! I'd like to find another, but prices for those have really skyrocketed over the last number of years as well they should by now. You figure the last of those two seaters rolled off the line nearly 50 years ago and there just aren't many around any longer. -
I love how this is coming together and with a Tamiya, these kits are notorious for simply 'falling together'! That's how well engineered they are. As far as a gloss coat, you might want to check out Tamiya's X-22 acrylic clear. While Future is good for some things, IMO it's not all that great as a clear. Airbrushing it is tricky at best and then you might have the issue with it pooling and running in spots. Tamiya's clear acrylics while they can take a bit to dry (dehydrator works wonders) are rock hard when it's fully cured. At least that's been my experience.

This had me fooled also as I've never seen this car in this scale! VERY, VERY impressive work!

I can believe that there probably was a yellow under consideration, but at the time the '69's were on the drawing board, AMC might have already had plans to "tone down" the AMX after the '70 model year. Perhaps make it more of a personal car sort of like the Cougars and Monte Carlos of the era. Of course they had the Javelin for that, thus the axing of the two seat AMX after just three short model years. AMC is funny in that it's hard to pin down what came on what car as far as options (Go Pack) as they were not always indicated on the VIN number. Believe it or not, I still know ALL the VIN numbers of my AMX! I got to know them quite well because at the time I bought it, AMC was being bought out by Chrysler and every time I needed something, they would ask for the VIN number as AMC could and did change things during any said model year. One thing I loved about my AMX though is that you couldn't fake it. Either you had one or you didn't. You can take a small block Mustang and make a big block out of it, or turn it into a Shelby (the VIN number would be a giveaway though), or you can take a small block Corvette and make a big block out of it. No way can you take a Javelin and turn it into an AMX! I guess you could, but man it sure would be a LOT of work! My car I was able to track down as being a very late '69 model having been built just before the shut down of the '69 model year (first week of June '69). By the engine numbers I learned that the engine was built in late May and of course, the car followed not long after that. I had thought that the blue one your club member did was the 1/20 scale MPC (I have that kit), as the details are so nice and crisp and yes, the bumpers do fit very well on his. -

Well, that's one of the nicer AMX's I've seen! And your Big Bad Green one is mighty sharp! My 1:1 was a very bright yellow-----couldn't miss it! I should build a model of it sometime, but one of my favorite colors for those is that bittersweet orange. A color that I would have had mine painted in if I kept it a bit longer. -
Aaaah man that is soooo nice! That's one vehicle I truly wish would make a comeback in this country! So tired of vision limiting SUV's and Crossovers in the way. That's another one of those Modelhaus resins I would have liked to have bought, but as they say "You Snooze, You Lose".

Tom, thanks so much for the invite (and reminder) about NNL East! I got the card and I've since called the hotel and made reservations. I certainly would like to get there the night before for the big get-together at the restaurant. I'd advise anyone that's planning on going, DON'T HESITATE TO MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS! Rooms WILL fill up fast and for those who've never been there, you owe it to yourself to make the trip. IT'S WELL WORTH IT! I almost wish this were a two day event-------there's SO MUCH to see there!

Oooooh!! Love that AMX!! ??? Makes me sorely miss my ‘69! Is that the MPC 1/20 scale? Absolutely gorgeous! -
That would be the pink plastic in the ‘59 Caddy convertible kit. ?

Actually pretty darn nice! Now considering my building skills in the early '80's, I made a mess of it with glue spots and smears and not so well fitting wheels/tires IIRC. That was more of an issue on my part as I was not one to test fit things back in those days. I did build the GT fastback years later, but that's long gone now to who knows where. I do have both kits again now and I'd like to build another one when the mood strikes. Of course, considerably better than what I did back in 1983-84.

Well, I like opening hoods so if any corrections would need to be made, I can do that.

Yeah, I meant the Daytona coupe. I see that it's 'available', but if the frenzy is just as crazy for it as the Spider, it'll be sold out in no time. No matter.........my heart is REALLY set on the GTO! That one for me is an utmost holy grail the more I look at it. Especially the '63 car. -
"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
MrObsessive replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks Anthony! Yeah, this wasn't far from being done at all, I just couldn't stand that area on the roof that's showing where I did the bodywork. Better for me to totally take it apart, strip it and do it over. Also, I want to mold a proper headliner for it.........something I wasn't able to do since at the time I had no vacuformer to make one. Redo the door jambs (too thick IMO) and some chassis details which aren't quite the way I want 'em. X2 if this can be done quarterly. The Ford wouldn't be done by the end of this quarter coming up, but certainly by the end of summer-------if I can keep up the ambition. -
Aaaaah! There you go! I hadn't thought of the glass being an issue as I didn't use any of the kit glass in my model. I made mine out of clear stencil sheet as I didn't care for the somewhat distorted appearance that mine had. This can also be a problem with other kits namely Revell. With their platform interiors and thick glass, this leads to 'stacking' and can make the cars sit taller than they should. I was glad to see them get away from this with the new '68 Chevelle kit. Hopefully that's a trend that'll continue. Just the same, your Ferrari looks terrific and it's one of my all time favorite cars! My 'holy grail' is to get sometime Model Factory Hiro's 1/12 scale one. A lot of money, but IMO worth every penny!

"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
MrObsessive replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Well, I'm late to the party. Maybe we can keep this going till the end of this year? I have one that I literally see each time I come into my model room and after I get the '68 'Vette done, I'll try my hand at this again. While it may look OK to the casual observer, looks can be deceiving as there's a big problem with the bodywork on the roof. Seems as though I didn't barrier the plastic and putty well enough, so when the paint fully cured, you can see right where I made the split on the roof to get it to fit. Sooooo..........I'm gonna totally take this one apart, strip it down to the bare plastic and while I'm at it fix some things that to me were still not quite right. Namely the door hinges, shape of the windshield header and a few other details. I just ordered another bottle of Snowshoe White from paintscratch.com and it came today and I still have some Regency Purple left over in the can. For those interested in seeing how this all came together, you can check here. Stay tuned! -

Hmmm.....................Ferrari 365 GTB huh? Very, VERY tempting! A bit more so than the Daytona. -
That looks terrific! It's been over 20 years since I built mine, but I can remember having to take the spindles (especially the front) and moving them up a bit on the knuckles. Same for the rear.......I think I fudged it a bit and moved the wheels up on the axle to lower things a tad. I have no build pics (1996), but it's one way to get around the high stance.
-
Super Duper nice and VERY impressive for its size! I've got one also that I've never touched. All the bells and whistles including the KA PE set, but no tires. I just can't see spending upwards of $150 for a set of resin tires. I'd like to know too...........heaven knows when I'll ever get to mine, but it would be nice to know some of the pitfalls that might await.

It took me a minute to see what you were mentioning and now I see exactly what you mean. GM had a crafty way of making things just 'seem right' back in those days and it's interesting that ALL of the '59 GM line used the same type curvature. They all used the same basic front door (based on Buick which was first with the new for '59 design) and this is why we got to see those wild fins throughout the line. That's a BEAUTIFUL car BTW and that color suits it big time!
-
Ok, I knew I wasn't imagining things when I thought that the front end of the Monogram '59 Caddy was a bit 'off'. I always thought the area above the headlights was a bit tall and you guys' comments have reinforced that. Another issue as to why I've never built the convertible when it was out (but know how to fix now) is to my eyes the windshield frame is ALL WRONG. Too low IMO, not enough curvature in the header and the vent windows just don't seem right to me. I am one of those however that likes a nice detailed chassis and engine to go with all those neat corrections on the body. I know I'm crazy..........my Mom's been telling me that for years! I'd love to snag one of these sometime Paul when these become available. I can GUARANTEE you that once this turns up on the 'Bay, you'll see a feeding frenzy to get it!
-
Yeah, but my idea was to tweak things a bit. You know me.......I’d solder up an entire new frame and just use the top portion of the hardtop. To my eyes, none of the hardtops out there look right to me. Especially the rear most part of the frame that holds the rear window. THE only hardtop that ever looked correct to me is Danbury Mint’s 1/12 ‘57 Corvette hardtops and of course those are too big! ??
-
Hmmm............I've got that Tamiya '66 Bug.......
-
OK Paul......now you did it! You just made me want to get one of those transkits as that is gorgeous! Does the kit come with the provision for the open top or did you have to make that? I've seen these on the 'Bay, but I can't remember how he does them. BTW, I've gotten his dash gauges in the past and those really can bring things to life!
