I, for one, have been very happy with the' Model Cars' contest coverage, . Admittedly, since Gregg is not able to visit the shows here on the mainland as much ( and i understand why, the coverage is not as good as it was,but I blame no one), Gregg was about as good as it gets, both in his personal contest coverage, and in fantastic photography....I used to stand back and watch that man effortlessly take photo after photo after photo, and still keep up endless 'banter' with the people in line for photographs....I do not sense that from other magazine's photographers, And I felt Gregg's love of both the hobby AND the hobbyists, was always right there on his shirt sleeve.... Now, I've been very lucky over the years, with a few pictures in the magazines myself, but I agree with him, submit pictures yourself, or find a way to help ! I would bet Model Cars Magazine takes literally hundreds of photographs at every contest they cover, and I know 'I' would not like to be the individual who has to choose what makes the magazines, and what does'nt........'Z'

While I applaud youe ventures in tire casting, I would prefer to see these without the large sprue on the tread of the tire. I have seen others cast with no sprue at all, in a flexable compound, but am not familiar with the technique involved I realize the complexities involved in a casting like this; just wonderin if there might be an alternative method....'Z'

Plastikote
Steven Zimmerman replied to sportandmiah's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to swear by plasti cote, but its getting hard to find. I tried Krylon primer, dries S.L.O.W....tried Rustoleum automotive primer, dries slow also. I useDupli color and have no problems. Better, buy a quart of1/1 automotive primer from PPG and thinner, and shoot it through an airbrush....dries fast, light coats will not craze plastic, and lays down more smoothly, which equates to less sanding. Also, the 2 part automotive primer works even better, only drawback...only mix what you're gonna use, since it hardens by chemical reaction, not an 'air dry' paint. -
model kits in unexpected places
Steven Zimmerman replied to milkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Cracker Barrel. Wife and I went out for breakfast several years ago, and we always 'browse' before leaving. I found the Lindberg 61 Impala hardtop. on another shelf in a differant part of the store, i found the convertible...they only had one of each and i bought them both. NEVER saw another model in there.....Local beer distributor, walked in, had a whole table full of models, 10 bucks apiece....turns out employee had a family member pass away, and sold his whole collection (about 100 /150 kits) all for 10 bucks apiece....'Z' -
...when you put a VIP (VERY Important Part) away in a special place ( box, drawer, etc) so you won't lose it, then, later, you spend 2 hours trying to find it......Or that VERY SPECIAL one of a kind set of wheels/ tires you can only locate '3' of....Or you spend an hour super detailing out a set of rims, only to find out your handling has worn through the chrome( and DON'T tell me to cover it with barefoil; maybe YOU can't see it....but I can...)

Been using the eyelets for fuel injection for about 6 years. Look for 'Crimp Beads' ; available in many sizes and look like braided line fixtures; braided elastic cord for braided line, colored with a permanent marker. Aluminium I.D. tags, made from soft aluminium, for brackets, clamps, etc.Little magnets for doors and hoods, flat head straight pins for raido and heater knobs, or polished for door knobs. screw together bracelet clasps for fuel injection air cleaners;malleable extruded aluminium screen for grilles; bag of small rubber hair bands for fan belts (250, about a buck)...buy a bag of blue sequins, the little blue'punch outs' in bottom of bag make perfect blue dots....Iron on sequins in red, chrome, or yellow make tail lights, parking lights, headlight reflectors, and come in several sizes, one of which exactly duplicates the chrome cone in the middle of speakers...Ribbon for mexican blankets, thin ribbon for seat belts.. Embossing powder for carpet. Rub on letter transfers. Gel pens for white lettered tires, and white walls .Fine line drafting pens Floral wire. Multi faceted crystals for tail lights, look for the CHEAPEST, because their 'facets are less sharp, look much more like bullet taillights....Plastic/acrylic'water droplets, for headlight lens..... Rubber bracelet cord that looks EXACTLY like radiator hose and is hollow, so you can 'pin' each end, or run wire through it and bend to shape........'Z'

Oh the Irony
Steven Zimmerman replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Years ago, I lost interest in this hobby, and GAVE a model car collection with about 250 unbuilt kits in it to a good friend's son,who was about 14 at the time. About 10 years later when I had a renewed interest in this hobby, i asked him if I could have ONE of them back (AMT 69 elky, of which I had given him 4 kits)...He replied"Yeah, fer a hunnert bucks !"...I never spoke to him again, but was not 'unhappy' when his trailer burned down with all those kits in it (he was not hurt)....'Z' -
High rise manifolds
Steven Zimmerman replied to The Modeling Hermit's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Interestingly enough, Hot Rod or Car Craft did an extensive test several years ago, and came to the surprising conclusion that a dual 4 bbl tunnel ram manifold set up-when used with the proper carburation, cam, headers, etc.when TUNED PROPERLY would out perform any single 4 bbl manifold combination (Not agreein, or dis agreein, just passin it on....)...'Z' -
