A few (very few) pics from Model Fiesta 43 in San Marcos, TX. Jan 4, 2024
LDO replied to LDO's topic in Contests and Shows
The old Esci/Aurora/a couple of others…1/9 scale German WWII BMW sidecar rig with aftermarket rider, dog, and a few accessories. The whole aftermarket set is called “Ketten Hund” or Chain Dog. The dog is wearing a chain like a necklace, so I guess that’s where the name came from. It’s a very nice resin set. -

What non-auto model did you get today?
LDO replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I looked in the book I got. There is a project called Entwurf mit BMW 802 and Einsitzer mit BMW 802. No mention of one with BMW P.8011, which would have been a BMW 802 with boost. So the proposed variant with 8011 and contra props may be an imaginary version of another plane that never left the drawing board. -

I couldn’t remember, so I did a search. I only saw it called FW Fighter Project with BMW 8011 engine. I know it is in a magazine special issue Called Luftwaffe 1946 or something like that. I have it at home. I’ll check later tonight. Now I’m wondering if it was invented on the internet. -
I just looked up what he used. It was a chunk of cast iron from a scrap yard. I think that would be hard to find, at least around here. Years ago I bought a piece of what I remembered as cold rolled steel. It was about 3/4” thick, but apparently CRS is not available that thick. So what would be good to use for hammering brass and copper? Thanks, Lee

Cars that grow on you as you get older.

Sedans…in general. I was always interested in hot rods and sports cars, but I’ve never had the money for a really wild car. I’m older now, and I really like a nice, comfortable ride. Three years ago I bought a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 190E with the idea of dropping in a boosted V-8. I found it’s just a great little car completely stock. I could see getting a pair of those Recaro seats that were so popular in the ‘80s, but that’s about it for mods. -
Can you recommend good videos for model cars? For armor models, Night Shift Models with Martin Kovac is really good. I can’t help thinking that he (and many other armor modelers) overdo the weathering. Boylei Hobby Time does really good dioramas. Some forced perspective, like a monster snapping turtle or snake. He does a lot of Imaginary Wild West; sort of steam punk meets old west. He’s really good at building scenery. Ebroin’s Miniatures has done some incredible underwater dioramas, including a submarine breaking up after getting hit by a depth charge and a DSRV lighting up the deck of a WWII German battleship (The Bismarck) on the ocean floor.

I think the AMT fuel tank would be too narrow. I saw one as part of a glue bomb on eBay. That thing was $62 and the tank had seen better days. I’m sure Jo Schmocan (I can never remember his real name) will print a nice tank. I got a body in 1/24. I plan to get another in 1/8. I got a Monogram parts pack tank in 1/8 for the future project. Lots of good choices for a nostalgia engine in 1/24; Tamiya Jaguar Mk.II Saloon XK inline six, early Hemi from Moebius ‘55 Chrysler 300, Buick Nailhead from Revell ‘29 Ford Roadster, Revell Cadillac OHV from their custom ‘49 Merc, plus lots of 3D print engines. I would love to see an 8 Stromberg manifold for an early V-8. I suppose it wouldn’t be too difficult to scratch build.

I think that Iceman shape is a bit too “squashed”. Another available shape is a Bic lighter, but still not quite right. I had not thought of scratch building it, but Ace-Garageguy got me thinking. I could use an Ellipse template to make several ellipses to wrap sheet plastic around, or even fill with putty.

This thing is just the coolest. Someone makes a 3D printed body. I figure the John Buttera ‘26 T street rod would be a good chassis donor, but I wonder about that fuel tank. Thanks, Lee Edit: I really don’t know a lot about cars from the 1920s. I just found out that Ford had a factory fuel tank that is closer to the Bic lighter shape. That also made me think that after WWII, a builder on a budget could have gotten a fuel tank from any number of military vehicles or equipment. Maybe a foreign in the junkyard because no spare parts were available. I think I’ll try a Bic lighter and say a guy found it in a junkyard. New pic is a Ford fuel tank

AMT 1968 Chevy El Camino Street Machine Announced for Reissue
LDO replied to Justin Porter's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Was that on the Hot Rod Magazine project car “240-Z28”? I’ll have to look it up. I’m also wondering if that was the car that had racing stripes that were a white/pearl white checkerboard. Edit: It is the same aftermarket EFI as the 240 Z-28 from the June 1985 Hot Rod Magazine. I did not look for info on the paint. https://www.hotrod.com/features/project-240z28-june-1985-982-1254-81-1/ -

A “Luftwaffe ‘46” plane. Never left the drawing board. It would have had a BMW engine that was never completed. Looks like an enlarged FW-190 with gull wings, somewhat like the F4U Corsair. 1/48 3D printed kit. FDM print so I’ll be filling in lots of lines. -
Custom scale rubber tires and rims
LDO replied to jpolacchi's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
What about 1/9 scale? There are diecast 1/9 Pro/Stock drag bikes on eBay. Those wheel s and tires might work. -
Kits with sculpted interiors?
LDO replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The seats from the Testors Vantastic kit are really nice, modern custom types. They made two or three versions. I don’t remember which box mine was in. You can get a very consistent smooth edge on scratch built door panel sections by using Evergreen quarter round for the border of each section. -
What happened? Did a sleeve hit the crank?

Butterball Hotline was no help. I may just wing it. Worst case, I’m out $25 or so.

An uncle did this maybe 35 years ago. It was really good, but I don’t know how many jalapeños or if they were in the turkey the entire time. Has anyone here ever heard of this? The uncle is no longer with us, so I can’t ask him.

What would YOU like to see as a model
LDO replied to JeroenM3's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
McLaren F1 road cars. Aoshima makes great Racing cars, but no road car. Fujimi makes a road car, but it is a curbside with a terrible engine insert, plus back tires that are too tall. If someone made a conversion set for either, I would be happy as a clown . -
I was going to say the same thing. I gave the glass to someone a few months ago
