  1. RE : Engine Colours for Chrysler Engines : - 1969 1/2 440 Six Pack : In spite of its factory-installed Edelbrock intake , all of the engine was orange . - Exhaust manifolds were oversprayed with engine paint , as they were installed before the engine was painted (although , most of the paint burned-off within a month of regular use) . This applies to all Chrysler engines , from the 170 Slant Six to the 426 Street Hemi . - Bellhousings ( manual trans ) were engine colour . - 440+6 ( as well as all Ramcharger / Air Grabber equipped engines , and 1972-1974 high performance engines' ) air cleaners were painted a different shade of orange (closer to Race Hemi Orange) .
  2. The AMT 1969-1970-1972 Chevelles require quite a bit of massaging . I'm working on the 1969 Chevelle SS-396 Convertible , and its body needed some filing (emery board mainly) of the quarter panels . Seems like there's a noticable amount of "core-shift" with the moulds , so side-to-side appearances are 'there' . Additionally , the panel lines require a good 'deepening' (they're pretty shallow) . Mind you , I'm talking about the convertible , and not the hardtop versions . Another thing to watch for regarding the AMT 1969 Chevelle --hardtop and convertible-- is the presence of 1968 body-side moulding trim . No biggie if you're after a 300 Deluxe coupe version , but definitely not correct for a hardtop . The Revell-Monogram 1970 Chevelle SS-454 (and its Baldwin-Motion variant ) is a decent kit . Matter of fact , I'd recommend the Baldwin-Motion Phase III version ; its interior has separate door panels , and the engraving is improved . Besides , the original c.1982 ( et seq.) release can't be built 100% stock out-of-the-box , as the correct air cleaner assembly isn't there . The Revell-Monogram 1970 Challenger T/A (from c.1982 , et seq.) is a nice kit . It "needs" some work to make its front valance panel into a correct replica (e.g. , the lower-front of the front fenders is moulded with the valance ; this is totally incorrect !) , but otherwise goes together nicely . Now , there are two distinct 1970 Challenger kits under the Revell-Monogram banner ; the aforementioned '70 T/A , and a new(er) "2-in-1" version . The new(er) version is based-off the c.2002 diecast Vanishing Point , et al. , kit . The diecast-to-polystyrene 'crossover' doesn't work too well (at least in this instance) , as the body has a "slab-sided" look to it (versus the gentle curve of the '1:1'). Also , there's only one engine in this kit (Chrysler B/RB) , even though the kit proclaims to have the T/A option . Well , no T/A ever came with any other engine than the 340 Six Pack . IMO , avoid that version of the Challenger .
  3. Nice work on that 'RM' , Bill ! Funny thing ; when AMT released that Road Runner in c.1989 , I was largely pleased with it ; how-ever , certain aspects of the kits seemed "blocky" to me ( oil pan , transmission , undersized Dana 60 , among other items ) . Beyond that , I just 'knew' there were other issues with its proportions , but never gave it much thought beyond that . On top of that , for what-ever reason , I never compared the kit's body to the tow or three "1:1" 1968-1970 Road Runners in my neighbourhood ... Now I'd kill to have those references right in front of me ! The mods you made to the wheel arches alone really made a difference !
  4. Nice find ! That appears to be a c.1945 map , which I base my assumption on : - Arroyo Parkway US 66 / CA 11 Figuroa Street ( modern-day CA 110 Pasadena Fwy ) - US 6 / CA 11 : The lack of a parkway through Downtown LA signifies that this is prior to 1947 ; that's the year that the Harbor Fwy opened (modern day I-110 ) - US 60-70-99 Garvey Blvd . By c.1947 this was truncated to the then-new San Bernardino Fwy (modern day I-10 "east") - CA 15 Atlantic Blvd . The Long Beach Fwy wasn't more than a thought at the time this was made . CA 15 was truncated to the L.B. Fwy by c.1958 ; renumbered CA 7 during the Great Highway Renumbering Act of 1964 ; eventually becoming I-710 in 1983 . The oldest map that I have is a 1957 Thomas Brothers Guide for Los Angeles & Orange counties .
  5. Nice , clean build there , Jim ! Welcome back to the hobby ! While I'm no fan of modern wheels / tyres on old(er) vehicles , your attempt isn't offencive in the least . Mainly , I love the colour choices ; those big old cigar smokin' G-bodies look so nice in medium-to-dark metallic colours . Super work on that 421 Tri-Power !
  6. In my opinion : - Monogram ( now under the Revell moniker ) 1971 Hemi'Cuda . Originally released in 1982 , and reissued ad nauseam ever since . The first modified issue was in 1984 (the first 'street machine' version) ; it too has been reissued quite a few times . 2003 brought the then-named Nash Bridges convertible . That one has a much nicer interior and a more-comprehensive decal sheet ; however , it's still based on the original hardtop . It's a nice , simple kit to build . I recommend checking out others' builds of this kit under the Under Glass or On The Work Bench section of this forum , as simple corrections have been outlined there . - Revell 1970 Hemi'Cuda Hardtop . All-new tooling ; lots of detail ; yields beautiful results. Personally , I wouldn't recommend it for some-one who's returning to the hobby , as it's got lots of small(er) parts , which can be frustrating to new-comers or returnees .
  7. - 1969 Dart - 1973 Duster - 1970 Monte Carlo - 1971 GMC Sprint SP-1 - 1971 Chevelle SS-454 - 1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass - 1973-1974 Super Duty Trans Am - 1973-1978 Chevy / GMC pickup - 1971-1978 Chevy / GMC van - 1953-1955 F-100 - 1980-1986 F-Series - 1971-1975 Vega - 1970-1972 & 1973 Buick GS(X) - 1968-1972 Nova - 1971-1972 Road Runner - Renault R5 Turbo - Peugeot 205 GTI - BMW 6-Series Bavaria - 1970 Charger - 1966-1967 Chevelle - 1968-1969 Chevelle Custom 300 coupe - 1967-1969 Camaro - 1970-1974 Gremlin - 1971-1977 Matador
  8. I've never had one of the coveted MPC 1971 Demon 340 kits , let alone see one in person , so I wouldn't have any-thing to compre to my 1972 Duster 340 annual and its under-side-of-the-hood origins ; I'll take your word for it . My main concern about the reusing of the AMT c.1998 issue of the 1971 Duster 340 is that kit's weak points : - Moulded-in wipers ( and blobby , bulging wipers at that ) - Garbage windscreen and backlight ( not to mention the quarter glass' fitment ) - Better-than-the-MPC-original "340" , but still lacking ( has its good points , but its top-end set a bit too upright ; there's no breather cap ; and one is 'forced' to use the air conditioning arrangement for the non-stock Six Barrel induction , unless one scores the setup from the Street Machine version ) - Lots of reworking of either the transmission tunnel to swap a Torqueflite in ( or , conversely , lots of shaving and trimming of the Torqueflite's case to get it to fit in the undersized tunnel ) Others have pointed out the AMT Duster's roofline being too 'rounded' ; however , I don't see that through my perspective . The front wheel arches have inherently been the incorrect Duster / Valiant shape on every Dodge A-body that MPC has made .
  9. AMT 1969 Firebird - Ancient moulds ; lots of flash to clean up . On a good note : the Sprint OHC 6 is nice ! Revell 1968 Ram Air Firebird - Haven't built this one yet , but it seems to yield excellent results . Revell 1970 Torino GT - I recommend the latest issue of this kit . AMT 1969 Mustang Resto Rods - Ancient moulds ; lots of flash to clean up . AMT 1/25 1966 Ford Fairlane GT/GTA - A very nice kit with a nice 390 FE , with options for a C6 or a Toploader . Monogram 1/24 1970 Plymouth Road Runner - Has its roots in the 1982-issue Monogram 1970 GTX 440+6 . Updated in c.2003 ; Road Runner specific parts added ; gorgeous decal sheet . AMT 1/25 '67 Shelby GT-350 - Not familiar ... If its roots are in the 1967 GT from c.1997 , then it's probably quite nice . AMT 1/25 1969 Hurst Olds Cutlass - A very , very nice kit ! This one dates back to 1987 , which was the hobby's renaissance year . All-new tooling (which still looks great considering it's nearly 30 years old now !) . I don't know how many of this kit had its Hurst Dual-Gate arrangement pirated for other builds . Highly recommended kit !
  10. That's right . That's what I remember reading about the '71 Demon ; a modified-reissue of the c.1998 AMT 1971 Duster 340 . I just hope that they were planning on using the original MPC body !
  11. I vividly recall seeing postings on eBay and other sites showing a late (don't recall what month) 2013 release (maybe it was 2012 or 2014 for this matter) . I don't recall ever seeing an official release on Round2's page . I've heard that the Demon 340 was cancelled because of tooling difficulties . I seem to recall that Round2 was going to "bash" the Demon with the 1971 Duster , but that was probably speculation . The more plausable explanation in regard to "tooling difficulties" is that , when the 1975-1976 Dart Sport was reissued in 1975 Annual guise , it was supposed to be a One Last Run of Fun or something like that ; like the 1974 Charger 'Street Machine' that was retooled into the NASCAR version (Buddy Baker ?) . Apparently , some-thing went wrong when the tooling was being backdated to a 1971 Demon . Who truly knows ? I'm just upset that I couldn't get my hands on a reasonablly-priced Demon !
  12. Very cool , Fabrizio ! Wasn't there a military version of the Mehari which had two engines ? Perhaps I'm confusing it with another Citroën ?
  13. Life-long resident of California . I would love to see : - Renault R5 Turbo , in street livery ; - Peugeot 205 GTI , street version ; - Peugeot 505 Turbo ; - Facel Vega with the Chrysler 383 ; - BMW M6 Bavaria
  14. The three that I've built ( two of the standard R/T kits , and a modified Street Machine version that I put the 340 from the Duster in , hooked to the kit's Torqueflite ) all had issues with the windscreen's lower-edge-mounting-segment (under the cowl) interfering with the body-to-chassis ( really , the dashboard ) mounting process . I also recognised that the driveshaft is a hair too long ; it needed to have a small section cut ( I cut its centre about 1/4" ) so that it would properly fit .
  15. One thing to be mindful of regarding the chassis assembly : the driveshaft is a hair too long . That bulges the axle housing backward if you can even get the shaft into the transmission and the differential carrier . Another consideration ; the windscreen's base (under the cowl) is too thick . Either eliminate the offencive piece or shave its thickness down considerably . Too bad about the bonnet . I knew that there was a marked difference between the '71-'72 bonnet and the '73-'74 . The bumper of the '71-'72 has a slight peak in its centre , whereas the '73-'74 is "blunt" . Keep up the great work !
  16. That MPC 1971 Road Runner kit would be awesome !! What woulkd make it even better would be to include the 1972 parts , also ; front grille / bumper , rear bumper / tail lamps , hood , and the custom parts . That coupled with instructions on how to fill-in the 71's side markers and add the '72 markers . Either return the kit's custom wheels back to the Cragar S/S , or replace them with the Motor Wheels Spyders from any of the other old MPC kits. It never ceases to amaze me just how much those 1972 GMC Stepside kits go for ! But , then again , they haven't been around in almost 20 years ( !! ) . I would love to have a few copies of that kit !
  17. I 2nd what Bill is saying . You'll also be dollars ahead by purchasing an aerosol can of engine paint versus the individual bottles . Personally , I just spray the paint right from the can . Regarding Chrysler Engine Blue ; there are at least 3 distinct shades of blue which Chrysler used from c.1965 - c.1983 : - 1965-1968 Turquoise - 1969-1971 Blue - 1972-1983 Blue There are two shades of Ford Engine Blue that I'm aware of : Light and Dark . The change from dark to light happened some-time in the early-mid 70's , but I couldn't tell you exactly when .
  18. No ; it has its roots in the 215 aluminimum V8 . On a related topic : While both Oldsmobile and Buick had Al V8's of 215 cubes , they were actually two distinct engines . The 225 Odd-Fire V6 , however , was Buick through-and-through (including the 60's Jeep applications) .
  19. That was Buick's name for the 225 V6 . This is the same engine , but in an Olds F85 .
  20. That's awesome ! Apparently their 1965 song inspired more than one car's name (e.g. this original paint 1968 Hemi Barracuda Super Stock) :
  21. That's where Duel made its appearance originally (1963 or 1964) .
  22. Count Five Psychotic Reaction
  23. Nice work ! I especially dig the personallised licence plates
  24. While not an autobiography , but definitely within the realm of musicians : - Up-Tight : The Velvet Underground Story (1983 , Victor Bokris / Gerard Melanga , et al.) - Please Kill Me ( the Uncensored Oral History of Punk ) (1996 , ad seq, , Eddie "Legs" McNeil , et al. )
  25. Richard Matheson .
