  1. The 1966-1971 Street Hemi was more than merely an engine option ; numerous other upgrades were part of the Hemi package : - Specifically-modified TorqueFlite ( same version that the 1969-1972 440+6 had ) ; - Exclusive shear panels (colloq. , "inner fenders") ; - H.D. axles and differential (versus the 340 / 383 / 440-4) ; - Special brake booster (if so equipped) ; - Mandatory 15" wheels , 1969-1970/71 ; - Exclusive K-Member ; - Extra welding-points ; - Torque Boxes ; - A slew of other modifications / upgrades . So , your $800 - $900 additional pay-out for the Hemi package was for more than "just an engine" .
  2. First 426 Hemi that I can recall seeing was in a 1968 Hemi Dart , back in the early-mid 70's . A neighbour whose house was up-and-over the next block had a '68 LO23 Dart ; first time I heard him fire the car up , I was terrified ! Ha ha ha ... the sound of that open exhaust Race Hemi frightened my little ears ; the ground pounding scared me equally as much . He used to run the car at Irwindale and Ontario . I grew up in a neighbourhood that was just-up from Whittier Blvd. I'd see anything and everything cruising ; from Trad Hot Rods , to new(er) Muscle Cars , to stock 340 Swingers and Dusters , and everything in between. I was also graced by the presence of Kustoms and Lowriders . Their outrageous stance , liberal application of brightwork , and far out paint schemes ... all visual delights to yours truly . I've seen -in person at least- exactly four Slant Six powered "big" cars ; in respective order 1.) 1971 Barracuda (whose original owner refused to sell or at least repair) 2.) 1969 Charger 3.) 1972 Barracuda 4.) 1968 Fury I four door sedan I , too , am looking forward to a (potential) 1970 AAR 'Cuda from Revell . If for nothing else , its 8 3/4 rear and standard V8 K-Member (and , obviously , the rest of the kit ). Now , if only someone would update their excellent '69-come-'68 Dart kit to a 1970 model and give it a 340 along with its existing 383 / 440 and Hemi ...
  3. ** Coming From a Life-Long-MoPar-Fan-Who-Actually-Likes-All-Makes ** I , too , am yawning at all of the "Hemi Hyperbole" . It is a great engine ; however , like everyone else who's chimed-in here , I agree that it's overdone . A properly-tuned 440+6 was / is a vastly-superior arrangement ; less weight (those 426 Hemi heads are cast iron) and equatable torque = 440+6 . The 340 is now-commonly overlooked , shunned in favour of its less-expensive 360 brother . The 340's "downfall" was that it was an expensive engine to produce versus the 383 . The aforementioned 1970-only "340 TA" had provisions for 4-bolt mains ( unnecessary in probably 95% of applications of any Chrysler A , LA , B/RB engines , due to the crankshaft centreline ). The TA's shining parts were their cylinder heads (offset rocker / pushrod capabilities to permit the grinding-out of the 'Dog Leg' ports) , and of course , the Edelbrock aluminum 3x2Bbl intake manifold . Now , to bit nit-picky : in order to "'properly' convert" the Revell HemiCuda to a 340 , 383 HP , 440 , or 440+6 model , the "'K'-Member" has to be modified / swapped to a non-Hemi part ; and the Dana 60 would "have to" go in 340 and 383 applications ( 440 / 440+6 with 4-speed were standard with the Dana 60 and 3.54 gear ; 440 / 440+6 with their standard TorqueFlite could be opted with the Super Track Pak [sic] which included a 4.10 gear'ed Dana 60 ). 340 and 383 HP models had the 8 3/4 rear , regardless . Personally , I'd take a 340-powered Dart / Demon / Duster , 'Cuda / Challenger , or 1971-1973 Road Runner / Charger versus a 426 Hemi . The ideal balance of power (340's had a real world h.p. rating closer to 320-330 hp versus their 275 hp rating) and handling is where it's at .
  4. 1953 is signifigant in the realm of automotive history regarding Ford , as that was the last year for their L-Head ("Flat Head") engine , at least in their V8 line . So , at a minimum , it is an interesting topic historically , assuming that you are going to build it in factory-stock guise . If not , it is still a really nice design to work with .
  5. One of the greatest pieces ever recorded . This one's from White Light / White Heat (1967) . Words by Lou Reed (1942-2013) ; reading by John Daevies Cale (1942- ) , delivered in his sonourous Cymraeg accent . One channel is the instrumental ( based on "Booker T." ) ; the other channel is the vocals .
  6. I come up the river like Skokeman fly DE-VO :
  7. How much of a role did the notorious "'X' Frame" (1959 Chevy) play in that "new versus old" collision ?
  8. Michael , those bad boys are ultra , super rare "Tri-'Y'" Headers from the 426 Super Stock Wedge package ; probably the 13.5:1 engine .
  9. Who said that C2 Vettes don't grow on trees ?
  10. Yes ! "Slump-Buster" is another great way to look at these kits ! That's another great point .
  11. These bad boys , right ?
  12. Are you looking for the "Tri-'Y'" headers ?
  13. I agree with Tom Geiger and Danno ; this is a brilliant move on Revell's part ! If "a-step-up-in-between" series of kits were around when I was a youngster , I'd have been all over 'em ! At a certain age , I'd perceived snap-together kits as "beneath me" , while at the same time having difficulties with the fledgling glue-together kits ( Revell's 'Dark Ages' in the 70's , for example , were among the worst examples !) . MPC's annuals were much easier ; however , they were all moulded in white at that time (i.e., post-1972 era) . I was still years away from spray painting bodies , so I was left with a collection of all-white builds ( ha ha ha ). AMT's kits were , while vastly-superior to 70's Revell offerings , still full of small parts and were beyond my skill level. Monogram's kits were a perfect amphiviate ; moulded in colour and easy assembly . But , as usual , I divulge ... I equate our hobby with the "1:1" hobby : if we "old timers" are a turnoff to potential fellow hobbiests , then we exhibit just as much guilt in reigning the death knell upon our hobby . It's like the "grey beards" at car shows ; act like an unmentionable part of the anatomy , and watch as youngsters leave in droves and avoid you at other shows . I wish continued success to Revell , Round2 , et al. I hope that this programme is a runaway success for them
  14. I use my girlfriend's toothbrush to scrub my Purple Power-soaked parts . Her teeth are "super clean" now !
  15. I agree ; those ignition wires and their routing look perfect ! The entire engine looks super , too ! Keep up the great work , Mike !
  16. I keep forgetting about that ( ) . I suppose that I'm thinking in terms of gasoline-fuelled versus the experimental-come-the-norm Nito-Methane-fuelled ( or , blended ) cars . I'll have to try to dedicate that knowledge to my 1970 Mainframe ; the differences between "Gasser" and "Altered" ... ...but I'm sure that the waters become quite muddied beyond that (e.g. , Fuel-Altered , et al.)
  17. Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett's "Waving My Arms in the Air" from "Barrett" (1970) . "Barrett" was his last complete album ; "The Madcap Laughs" precedes it from 1969 . A 3rd album's recording was aborted when Syd stopped playing all together . http://youtu.be/kQFPuH3QrHk
  18. Yesterday marked the 10 year anniversary of having Oliver as a very important member of our family . But , prior to adding him to our family , we'd adpoted another feline companion . She came from the same shelter where Oliver came from , just one year earlier . Her names is Molly ; she's a gorgeous Domestic Shorthair with Calico markings and green eyes . One of her neatest markings is a patch on her left side that's in the shape of Africa ! I believe her to be part Bombay (a gorgeous breed of solid black cats) , due to her physique and certain physical features . She was rescued on 28th Novembre 2002 . Oliver is a very unique kitty . He's definitely got some British Shorthair and / or American Shorthair in his gene pool ; thick-skinned ears ; big rounded eyes ; stocky build ; tail that's thick at its base , then tapers to a blunted tip . In spite of his build , he's quite the athlete ! He still charges about like a kitten ... and he's 11 years old ! I refer to him as a Ship's Cat , as he inspects everything that we bring home . Even if the new item(s) is / are hidden , he'll find them ! He also talks to his catnip toys . His vocalisations are that of a mum talking to her kittens ! Molly has always been mature , even as a tyke . She will occassionally run up-and-down the hall and let-out some playful growls . She sounds like a Mountain Lion ! For the most part , she just lay about , contented where-ever she is . She'll be turning 12 this year . My favouite feline folklore is the tale of the Maneki Neko ("Beckoning Cat") . See image(s) below for how this feline is portrayed in statue format .
  19. Firstly , being that I'm a Rock-n-Roller at heart , and especially 60's Garage and 60's Avant Garde , I'll tell you that my favourite Rock band is The Velvet Underground . I also really love Motown and Soul . I used to enjoy watching Soul Train when I was young . Of course , Punk (a loose term) and its off-shoots (Death Rock , New Wave , etc. ) are faves from my "angry teen" years . I have truly diverse tastes ; my friend and I used to make "mixed tapes" (which eventually evolved into "mixed disc") . I can just as easily listen to and enjoy , say , Sade , in addition to , say , GG Allin (ever hear his earlier works with The Jabbers ?) .
  20. Ha ha ha ! I agree with Harry ; it is nice to see the stock version of a '49 Merc ! Around the corner from where I grew up , there was a blue '49 Merc , and it was stock ! It even had its L-Head V8 and every-thing ! I remember thinking , Man , I hope that no one ever cuts that thing up in order to customise it !
  21. ...and then there's that gorgeous A-727-A transmission ! Other than "missing" the internals , it assembles exactly like the "1:1" version ; separate case , oil pan , and tail housing / extension !
  22. I have a couple of those in the rafters as well , including one or two of the Street Machine version's engine ; the latter because of the lack of "mandatory" air conditioning compressor mounting / brackets / belts & routing . That "Viper-esque" engine has only provisions for the H2O pump , crank , and alternator accessories , which is perfect for the Six Barrel arrangement from the stock 340 in the stock version . $30 is "spendy" for sure , but it's worth every penny . Where else is one going to find water pumps for both the 1968-1969 (cast iron) and the 1970 & later versions ?
  23. Nifty Gasser , Walt ! Personally , I'd have installed a GMC Twin-Six in its boiler room ; however , that Maxie looks just fine where it is ( )
  24. Super Merc there , Tulio ! Now , doesn't that kit come with a crossram-equipped 413 as well ? That Merc would run better if you'd utilised that engine instead ( ).
  25. Just got the one which I'd ordered a few weeks ago ; the red-colour-mould version (by choice) . I was happy to see : - Restoration of the ambre and red exterior lighting - Front seats were also restored - Snow tyres I for one am pleased as pie to see this kit --in any incarnation-- available again !
