MPC Super Charger - 1974 Charger rundown
1972coronet replied to CapSat 6's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The '72 400 was decent - it was hamstrung by the following year. However, the B-Engine (mainly the 383 and 400) is a great foundation for the 450" + cube stroker engines. The bigger-than-the-440 bore + a lower block skirt make for a better basis. The 1974 360 (first year for the aforementioned high-perf version) was truly a sleeper. Longer stroke than the 400 (the B-engines, all the same) made for a torque monster. The addition of , in essence, the 340's top end (cam , four barrel, exhaust manifolds) would make it sing. Timing was "poor" for the intro of the 245hp (net) 360. The first gas crisis fell upon the consumer only a couple of months into the model year (21-10-1973) and lasted until March 1974. However, the 4-speed was optional for '74 only (in spite of rumours to the contrary) , making that a one-year-only setup. The 360 lived on through the Malaise Era in the A-bodies and B-bodies ; the former having the option to delete the catalytic converters ( not in California, of course ), then abandoned them entirely for the '76 model year ( a '76 Dart Sport 360 - now 220hp - was top contender in a Car & Driver test / shootout ). -
MPC Super Charger - 1974 Charger rundown

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ! I can think of a few , but they're not being brought up for reissue or new issue. BTW, a 360-powered 1974 Charger is better, IMO, than a choked-out 400 big block - all being equal. -
Considering that it's 40 years old ( I remember when it was new - bought one as well ) , that's not too bad. It's a bulky box to keep around ; looks as though FedEx had their way with it. IIRC, these were around 50$ U.S. back then - huge money ! Mine perished in the 1987 earthquake.

Just to be clear - we are discussing the original Eleanor (1971/1973 model) , no ? I've only watched a few vignettes of that c.1999 "remake", and was duly unimpressed. For me, it's the 1974 original ONLY. IIRC, Revell had at least some test shots of the 1973 parts for, ostensibly, a 1973 version , based on their 1971 kit(s). Other 'an a combination of 1971 & 1973 Mustang cosmetics (e.g., the one in the original film), the licence plates would be the only outward variable .

MPC Super Charger - 1974 Charger rundown
1972coronet replied to CapSat 6's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I had an earlier version of the Super Charger - earlier, as I don't remember its having the pitch-black tined windows. That godawful tinted glass came along in, what, 1983 ? I know for sure MPC was using it L.A.M.F. starting with the 1984 Corvette annual (oddly - or not - the promos of the respective kits were sans that stupid deep-tint glass). But, I digress... The one I built was moulded in red. I could swear this must've been around '79 / '80, as I used it for "Show & Tell" in grade 3 . I definitely remember explaining to my classmates what the Christmas Tree was used for, and its nomenclature (haha). -

Does this resemble anyone's work area?

My first thought exactly. In my instance, we'd have to add two bratty cats doin' what cats do ( 💘 ) -
My first JO-HAN

100%. Heck, Jo-Han even tooled up a T-N-T -specific air cleaner for the Chrysler 300 ! And it's engraved ! -
MPC Super Charger - 1974 Charger rundown

RE: Last Minute Change from R/T to Rallye , @tim boyd , et alia : The R/T was actually shown on factory blueprints as late as 09/1971 ( !! ) Some decades back, I read an article in Mopar Action where its Tech Ed exhibited that same-as-1971-models hood treatment with the R/T front-and-centre. However, there was an accompanying note which read (to paraphrase) : " R/T Info Removed" . Insofar as the Challenger ; that's the reason for the '72 Challenger Rallye's JS23 VIN prefix. It was indeed a separate model for '72 only ; it was relegated to an option package for '73 (and the JH23 VIN prefix). I seem to recall that the Challenger was already slated to be dubbed Rallye while keeping the "JS" prefix. The Charger was a last minute change. ____________________ _____________________ _________________________ The dark blue paint colour you're referring to, @tim boyd, is _B9 Dark Blue Metallic, a Monaco/Polara (and Fury) colour only. On an A. B, or E body, it would be coded "999". -
My first JO-HAN
1972coronet replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My favourite has to be the '68 Fury I Police Car. Sure, it has a (generic-but-nice) Chrysler big block , backed by a manual transmission (yes, the 1:1 Fua ry could be had with a 383 Super Commando backed by a 4-speed, but it's doubtful that any police agency would order one - let alone a fleet -as such ) , but that's easily rectified . I had a few Jo-Han kits back in the 1970s (mainly the snap-together - "unassembled promo" - kits; the Olds Cutlass was my fave) and later, in the 1980s ( Cadillac Ambulance with sixties surf livery and such ; the aforementioned '68 Fury I ; and a couple of the S&M Barracuda P/S ). I enjoyed each one of them. -
Thank you, firstly, for your input in your reply. Well, I guess that I'm at least the 3rd or 4th owner of my Crown Victoria ( haha ). First was the California Highway Patrol ; then it went to Inglewood , Ca. , P.D. for a couple of years; then to the guy I'd purchased it from ; then to yours truly. 129,165 hard miles on it when I bought it four years ago - 153,000 on it now (well-maintained miles in my hands), and zero big problems ( honestly, I don't consider the intake manifold to be a big problem).

- 1972 Charger Rallye ( much as I dig the '73 / '74 designs and the resultant MPC annuals, the '72 is just a better looking car ) - 1972-1974 Challenger - 1977/78 Monaco 2 door (became the Force 440 in its final iteration, before being retooled as the 4 door sedan) - 1972-1977 Dodge Van (with options to build a Tradesman or a Sportsman ) -
I haven't watched & listened to the video yet ; however, I felt compelled to share my thoughts. I believe that it's the (dreaded) bean counters who have the final say in the proposals. Engineers can submit many proposals - some good, some awful - and have their best works rejected due to cost. Certainly, there are assembly line concessions ( look at replacement hoses - seldom do they resemble the factory routing... an assembly concession ), but that can't be the only consideration. In regard to my current whip - that "blah-blah-blah" plastic composite intake manifold is the weakest link on an otherwise fantastic engine ( 4,6 Modular V8 ). The aluminium-cast intakes are so expensive , as they were produced only for the Bullitt edition, and maybe the Cobra and GT 40 , though I believe that the latter two are the 5,4 engine - different heads. I have to replace that P.O.S. intake soon, as 21 years of heat-cool cycles have taken their toll - presuming that it hasn't already been replaced a time or seven already. I already have the intake which is sold through Summit ; a made in the USA "rebranded" OEM intake. But, I digress... Bean counters are the death knell.

1.) Yes, please. I missed it the last time around ! 2.) Could always use more of the 2WD version. 3.) The '72 , right ? I'd like to see that one again, too. Just needs stock build options. -

MPC 1/16 Corvette splittwindow, rare?
1972coronet replied to Mattilacken's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It has been re-issued a few times over the decades, beginning with the example you have exhibited; then as the Rod Shop iteration from c.1976, and; finally, the c.1983 modified-reissue (festooned with 1980s rims and decals) . As for its rarity ? That I can not answer. -
Sounds like a great idea ! IIRC, it was Missing Link. I'll have to peruse his eBay page...
