OK, more Mopar questions....
Swifster replied to imatt88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Could be wrong, but I don't think the Slant 6 was available in the Challenger. I think the base engine was the 318-2V engine. Nope, I'm wrong. The 6 was available in both hardtop and convertible. But they didn't make many. These must have been the Deputy models. -
The Pinto and Vega were garbage. Vegas rusted as they moved down the assembly line. All FOUR companies in the 1970's brought stuff out way to early. Pintos exploded. Vega engines failed well within the warranty period, and then failed some more while the fenders rusted to nothing. The smallest car Chrysler made were Volare and Aspen, and the fenders rotted away to nothing. Of course everyone who had a Honda (Toyota, Nissan, Subaru) looks at this time with rose colored glasses. They fail to remember how many rotted to nothing (how many do you see today?). Chrysler did rather well in the 80's and 90's until MB forgot how to build cars. GM was run by a bunch of bean counters. Roger Smith's brand management failure almost killed GM in the early 90's. And the US government let Honda, Nissan and Toyota dump Acuras, Infinitis and Lexus cars and trucks here at big losses. Hard to compete when Toyota is GIVING away Lexus cars ($10K discounts) to get their foot in the door. As for Japanese taxes, someone needs to recheck their facts. Japan taxes their cars based on engine sizes. So if you don't sell a 660cc powered car, you get hammered. How many 660cc powered cars do the Big 3 make? "Furthermore, there is an annual automobile tax, which depends on the engine size and is typically between 10,000 and 50,000 Yen, and an acquisition tax to be paid when you buy the car." By the time Japan stopped building utter c r a p, alone came the Koreans. Can anyone tell me if they have ever seen a Hyundai Excel move under it's own power? I saw two and totaled both of them. Having Mercedes parts in your car isn't necessarily a benefit. Check out a Consumer Reports on 1995-2005 Mercedes products. A lot of failures. And while Fiat platforms haven't been used under a Chrysler product until the Dart, who do you think paid for the interior changes over the last 3 years? The Italians did something the Germans never did. They invested in product. The Chrysler 200 vs the Chrysler Sebring is a great example of this. The upgrades to the Avenger is another example. The government funds didn't cover all of this. GM attempted change their culture before the 'bailout' and simply ran out of capital before they were done. Bob Lutz was brought in to reorganize the automotive end. Maximum Bob was responsible for the Pontiac Solstice, G8 and Saturn Aura (2007 CoY). Notice the problem with those three cars? The time to build a car was drastically cut. The government screwed with GM anyway. You don't think GM cutting Pontiac vs Buick in the states wasn't a middle finger pointed at D.C.? The mileage of the vehicles made by Pontiac was higher than those made by Buick. The Big 3 have been forced to sell cars no one wants (tiny small Europen type cars) when outside of New York, none of the US cities have skinny little European roads. Who wants to drive from NY to San Francisco in a Fiat 500 vs say that C300. On a nice long trip, I'd take the Chrysler any day. I probably drive more than anyone on this board (35K a year). My Caliber is almost claustrophobic. And even with 155HP, it feels under powered. Hybrids do nothing in Florida except get in the way of traffic.

$25 for the lot...

I would think the '70 Buick Wildcat chassis would fit perfectly under the Olds.

That 2-dr sedan Bisky is cool. Too bad they don't make a matching 4-dr sdn. -
SO YOU FINISHED YOUR MODEL, NOW WHAT?
Swifster replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
M80's... As I haven't built anything in 30 years, the newer stuff will probably stay around to see build quality progress. 4 cars in progress... -
Do You Follow the Instructions?
Swifster replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
OK, let me be the one with OCD. Yes, I read the instructions a couple of times before building and keep it handy during the build. Do I build the model in ORDER? Not necessarily... -

Augie, what foreign car plant in this country is unionized? None! Mercedes buried Chrysler. They stole Chryslers $9B rainy day fund and put out uncompetitive c r a p like the Caliber. Chrysler's quality went down hill under Daimler as well. Shortly after the merger, it was Chrysler keeping Mercedes afloat because THEIR quality was c r a p. The 2nd Chrysler bail out was due to Daimler and Cerberus. You need to spend money to make money. Fiat, as a partner, has at least made the investment and it shows in the products over the last two years. As for the foreign c r a p you mentioned, why would the US bail out Asian companies. Our government sold the manufacturing segments in the US down the river. And that includes the auto industry. Unrealistic and unnecessary CAFE regulations only played to foreign car companies who were building high MPG cars for Asia and Europe. American car companies had to build cars Americans didn't want to meet regulations while Japan Inc just sent off the shelf cars here. "Well they bought Toyotas, Hondas, etc.". Doubt this? When the government basically outlawed large cars, everyone bought trucks and SUV's. They traded their Country Squires and Caprices for Expeditions and Tahoes. There is profit in trucks and non in Focus or Cobalt sales. Ever notice how Toyota and Nissan have tried over the last 10-15 years to sell competitive trucks made in Texas against the Big 3, including Dodge? Notice how they are still uncompetitive? I guess the Big 3 still make a great truck, while Nissan and Toyota engines (not to mention that girlie Ridgeline Honda tries to sell) sludge up and fail and make their customers beg for some warranty help. Nope, you wouldn't notice because you've been blinded by the 'rising sun' while drinking sour Kool-Ade. The bail outs were the fault of our own government. This 56MPG c r a p car to make the Sierra Club happy is just more of the same. Pelosi and her tree huggers push Electric and Hybrid c r a p while they work to keep clean diesel engines out of the country (what do you mean poor Toyota, Honda and Nissan don't have diesels...). And last, our government touts free trade. What garbage. If GM sends a Cruze to Japan, they'll tax the hell out of it. It's hard to sell a $50K Cruze to anyone. Treat the Japanese the way they treat us and you won't see anyone buying a $50K Corolla, Civic or Sentra. Let's do fair trade and see how the Big 3 do. And Augie, if you got up and took a ride in a current Big 3 car, you'll see the quality is there. I'll take anything the Big 3 puts out against any Jap c r a p. Oh, one last thing about the bail out. Had McCain become President and let GM and Chrysler fail, as he said he would have done, this country would be in a depression. Ford would have been sucked down with the other two. Those non-unionized foreign car plants you spoke of would have closed. No way? Where would they have gotten their parts from? The supplier network would have colapsed with them. No parts means no cars. There would have been another 3 to 4 million jobless people collecting unemployment. Even Bush was smart enough not to let GM & Chrysler die. Oh, and Chrysler already paid the government back.

What Do You Wear To Build Your Models In?

What Do You Wear To Build Your Models In?
Swifster replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What do I wear? Nothing, as I go commando. It keeps the little old ladies in the neighborhood from peeking in the windows... -
Any 400, 425 or 455 Olds engine should work. That's definitely an interesting car. Also keep in mind that GM didn't really start swapping engines between divisions until '75 or '76...

I live in the US. Chrysler, Ford and GM all make musclecars. And it will be a cold day in Hades before I drive a Honda, Toyota or any other Asian car. We need to tax their cars in the US the way they tax ours in their home markets. They won't be selling too many $50,000 Civics or Corollas here.
-
If you lived in the US and had to drive from one coast to the other, somehow I don't think you'd want to take a cramped tin box vs a roomier car. And while our gasoline is still artificially inflated (in my eyes anyways), it still isn't as inflated (taxes) like in other parts of the world. If there truely was a fuel shortage, I'd worry about mileage more. Until then, I'd take a nice V8 powered car anyday. And yes, I'm aware Super GT is a few notches above. I just have no room in my life for electrics or hybrids.

What's with the Gremlin?
Swifster replied to Matt Bacon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Dave, I feel the same way about my Studebaker. I'd love to get an AMC though. Just to be different. -
Electric cars and hybrid cars are just for publicity. I can't stand them. No one aspires to own a poopie box. And that's all these are. I'd take a Chrysler 300 with a hemi any time. Actually, make mine a Challenger. I don't want stop/start technology on it and I don't care if it doesn't get 56 MPG. That 'race car' does nothing for me. Low end of the race car totum pole for me is super touring (BTCC). If the Sierra Club wants to go racing, make it for them.

What's with the Gremlin?
Swifster replied to Matt Bacon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Like the Maverick, it was the huge bumpers that AMC put on the Gremlin (and Hornet) in '74 that compromised how they looked. I had an uncle that had a '72 Gremlin X and I really liked the car. It had a 304 with a 4-speed and I always like going for a ride in it. But like many here, I was only a kid in the 70's. -
Thanks guys!!!

As mentioned, there was a discussion on this a week or two ago. It being a curbside wouldn't stop me from getting it. -

How Technologically Savvy Are You?
Swifster replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd like to think I'm tech savvy enough for most things. I've rebuilt my old laptop 6 or 7 times due to various parts failures, including drives, keyboards, motherboards, screens, plastic casings, etc. My VCR doesn't have the clock flashing '12:00', I have a Droid that unfortunately I'll never use to it's full power and I'm getting ready to replace my tube TV with a flatscreen. I have set up my wireless router and printers. My business is almost paperless (I print out my assignments and vehicle diagrams). I back up my files so I won't lose anything. I've upgraded my desk top so I can search on one and work on the other. I don't have a netbook or tablet as I need more memory than what normally comes with them. I don't have a kindel as I actually like to read a book.
