Another crazy ebay listing...
Tom Geiger replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Up to $62. Makes ya wonder if the bidders think it's an actual kit, even though the seller states it's an airbox and empty several times! -
Very nice! The Airfix 1/32 range are actually very nice kits. Some of them have the detail level of 1/25 scale kits. As an American kid growing up in Europe they were all that was available so I became very familiar with them!

How did you melt yours?
Tom Geiger replied to Lunajammer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've never melted a model but I did leave a bag of Gummi Bears (note - correct German is Gummi not Gummy) on the dashboard of my '66 Valiant once. They melted into the defroster ducts and the car smelled great for at least a year! -
Very nice work Jeff!

I would like to say thanks..

Very, very cool! You've come a long way in a short time which means you are a good listener and learner! Keep on building and every model will be progressively better. And always keep your builds. It's like a chronicle of your skills. -
How many of you participate in contests ?
Tom Geiger replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Two guys who get it! I don't build models for competition, but I always bring stuff out to show. I like to show my stuff to guys from the boards who sweated through the build with me and wanted to see it in person. The NNL style shows are friendly places to bring out your models and share them with folks. I always enjoy people's reactions to my models and meet new friends with common interests that way. It's like a cruise night for models. Nobody is there for a trophy, and nobody will judge your models. I spend most of my time at shows just talking to people. Sometimes until I'm hoarse! I encourage folks here to display your builds on the board as well. I notice that there are a bunch of folks here who post daily but never have posted any of their models, or builds in progress. And guys who posted in another thread that they went to shows recently but didn't display anything.. we'd like to see what you're into! -
"Best decal material"?
Tom Geiger replied to johnbuzzed's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Bingo! I do the same. I mostly wind up using quarter sheets (lengthwise, still 8.5" wide) for most of my decals. And print several to many of each image you need. Then pick the very best ones for your model once you've gone through all the steps of printing and sealing the sheet. Murphy will see that you waste a few too! -
Very cool choice! I'm pulling up my chair to watch the build!

Nice model room. You live in a log cabin? Kewl!

The Scooter was the car that dealers could advertise cheaply, then sell the buyers up to better equipt models. I'm sure they sold some, my Uncle Dan was famous for buying the cheapest car he could. And I remember at least one brochure photo showing one as a delivery car. Businesses would buy those Scooters. Ron Hamilton sold Chevys in this era and once told a group of us a hillarious story about a certain bare bones fleet ordered Chevette they had at his dealership. Maybe he'll show up and retell the story!

Bill, I saw the ROG VW test shot recently at the Liars Model Car Challenge. To my untrained eye, it looked like the best detailed kit of a VW to date! The engine alone looks like it's worth the price of the kit. Every little detail and rib on the transaxle! Can't wait to get my hands on one!

My grandfather and father were both full size Ford LTD / Crown Vic guys. Upon my father's death I wound up with the very last Vic. One my grandfather had bought new and passed on to my father when he stopped driving. So I drove it. And learned that it really was a very nice car to drive. I remember being on a Ford dealer lot and seeing a new Crown Vic, not much chrome on it with a blacked out grill. It was a civilian car, and had bucket seats, console and floor shifter. I can't remember the year, but it nearly came home with me!

That's me and that camper! It comes apart real easy with screws. I want to turn one into a full detail interior and haven't gotten any further than taking it apart! In my defense, the interior wasn't meant to be opened up. None of the camper windows are cut open, just painted black. And there is a lot of structure and screw posts in the interior to hollow out!

Especially when you wind up with two Ralph Cramdens, both trying to get the upper hand in a deal! In many cases if someone I know posts they need something, or a part I have that they need for a current build, I'll just send it to them! I'm just happy to send it where it will get used. Nothing more needed in return. -
Thank you, whomever you are

It wasn't me but I like the idea a whole lot. Kudos to the good Samaritan! And Rob, forget about finding out who it was. And just do something nice for someone else! -
I really like the split window work you've done. As you know there isn't a kit split window in 1/24 or 1//25 scale. I can't figure that one out at all!

Equity, being fair. Make sure the other guy got an even deal. I'm sure the vast majority of folks here feel that way, but when I've posted here for trades, I've gotten PMs from guys suggesting a real lopsided deal in their favor! -
Amazing how time slips by....
Tom Geiger replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I guess I don't know anything about the car market but I seriously wonder why Ford doesn't continue to crank out Crown Vics and Town cars for commercial use. They seem to be everywhere, and amazing as such that they haven't even been produced in a few years. Still, every taxi in Philly (except for one company that uses hybrid Altimas) is a beat to hell Vic! I know a guy I went to high school with, who owns a limo company and is beside himself with what to replace his aging (average 500,000 miles!) Town Car fleet with. And Crown Vics are very popular in the Mid East! Ford was selling the extended wheelbase taxi version as the standard car there. I don't know how they can walk away from those markets! -
That's the one! I took a lot of photos of the truck and the camper. I even have shots of the camper taken apart... all of them currently missing on Fotki.

The only thing wrong with following the one on eBay is that it has air conditioning, thus a ton of extra plumbing under the hood. The very essence of a Chevette is rolling down the windows, no a/c! With the two I have, I will do my early version as my sister in law's bright green 1977 bugger. I will have to trade out the transmission (kit has automatic, her's had a clutch). The later model I'm thinking a white light commercial theme of a pharmacy delivery car. Yea, that's the kind of car they used in the day!

Here's my copy of the Motormax Plymouth pickup. I like this very much and wouldn't think of breaking it apart to do anything different. I'd add some light commercial decals on the doors... Since someone mentioned Dodge, Johnny Lightning did the neat humpback van. Our very own Art Anderson designed the Coke scheme. Motormax also did a nice '66 Chevy pickup that hasn't been kitted. I got one of those at Walmart in a set with a camper for $20. I've also seen the above Plymouth pickup mated with that same camper at Wallys. So that's another place to look.

"Best decal material"?
Tom Geiger replied to johnbuzzed's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've had good luck with the Micro Mark product. Nice and thin, accepts ink well. Someone had recommended sealing it in with the Testors decal sealer. It's been good to me. -
Cool! I was voting for the Chevette! Use that eBay auction for the 2,000 mile car for reference. It has over 100 pictures! I have both the later Bear Bait and the earlier 1978 era Chevette kits. The older one is a paintless old built up that I'd love to build as my sister in law's old car. Bright puke green!
