I think I know what you're saying, and of course we all have different tastes. For me, I like a good story. Not a fan of action/adventure/sci-fi kind of stuff, so movies like Star Wars and "action films" with a lot of car chases and explosions just don't interest me... so even though they may we very well done for what they are, the directors who do them don't really register on my radar. But with Clint Eastwood, yes, his style is pretty much a straightforward story teller, with minimal (if any) "artistic touches" or special effects or stuff like that. I guess the term for movies like that is "character driven." Not everyone's cup of tea... but that's how I like my movies.
