garage diorama fully detailed and fully scratch build ...
Ramfins59 replied to crazyrichard's topic in WIP: Dioramas
Richard, the amount of detail that you've put into this diorama is amazing. To my eye, the only things missing are some people...... and cars of course. -
Thank you all very much guys. Bill, you really shouldn't let resin kits intimidate you as they are really not much harder to work on than plastic kits, plus, since they're curbsides you don't have to work on engines or chassis. Gives you breaks from full detail kits. Carl, I usually have a color scheme for a car "in my mind's eye" before I start working on it. If not, I'll do a search on Google until I find the car in colors that appeal to me. Dave, I've only got a couple more cars for 1956 to build and I'll have all of them. Once that happens I'll be able to take pictures of the entire "graduating class". The only car that is eluding me is a '56 Studebaker. I get outbid every time I try to get one on EBAY.

Thanks again very much for the kind and encouraging words guys. Steven, I always try to do my homework and first research the cars that I build to try my best to get the details right. When I started doing the BMF on this car I was going to foil the molding at the top of the doors but then discovered from Googled reference pictures that they were not chrome which surprised me.

Thank you all very much for your kind comments guys.

Sometimes old jar paint can harden up in the jars, but if it is spray cans they should still be good but you'll need to do a lot of can shaking to get the BB's loose to mix up the paint.

It took a while but I finally got this model finished. Had some mishaps along the way as usually happens. It is a resin kit from Modelhaus that I got from them shortly after the NNL East show. The major mishap was me getting drops of CA glue on the trimmed vacu-formed glass while tacking it in place in the body. I used a polishing kit but just could not get the white spots out of the glass. Steven Guthmiller was kind enough to send me the front glass from his kit that he had not yet worked on. I will replace it as soon as Modelhaus' website is opened up and running again. Steven, I can't thank you enough for helping me out on this. The car is painted Duplicolor Arctic White on the roof and Krylon Baby Blue on the body. Here are the pics... http://images57.fotki.com/v81/photos/9/3018309/13818986/CADILLACMODELFINISHED11024x724-vi.jpg http://images60.fotki.com/v662/photos/9/3018309/13818986/CADILLACMODELFINISHED21024x751-vi.jpg http://images57.fotki.com/v283/photos/9/3018309/13818986/CADILLACMODELFINISHED31024x763-vi.jpg http://images40.fotki.com/v1075/photos/9/3018309/13818986/CADILLACMODELFINISHED41024x732-vi.jpg http://images54.fotki.com/v242/photos/9/3018309/13818986/CADILLACMODELFINISHED51024x675-vi.jpg While I love Modelhaus' kits, they are not without their little foibles and sometimes annoying issues. Nothing that can't be overcome by an experienced modeler working with resin, but annoying nonetheless. Most of the time the interiors do not fit perfectly into the body. They are either a tad too narrow, causing the builder to add pieces of plastic to the outside edges of the side panels, or, a tad too wide and need to be sanded down a bit. The vacu-formed glass, while more in scale than plastic kit glass, can be a bear to trim properly, needing a lot of trimming and fitting over and over to get it right. Then, once you get the glass trimmed and installed you'll sometimes find that either the dashboard or the package tray need trimming or sanding to snug up properly against the glass. Of course you don't find this out until the glass is installed and the interior is painted and assembled. In a lot of instances you'll find that the resin interior buckets do not have positive mounting points inside the body of the car. You have to get creative in making your own using pieces of plastic. Overall though, Modelhaus kits are excellent products and a lot if not most of them are of cars that cannot be found anywhere else. Their kits of mid and late 1950's cars and later appear to have been made from old original promos or craftsman kits with the screw on chassis's. I've built almost a dozen of their kits so far and will be building several more. Thanks for looking in on this, and as always, comments and critiques are welcome. Now on to the next one.

Yeah, I got the same Fotki notice and decided to bite the bullet and sign up for a paid account. While it's not terribly expensive it just honks me off that I now have to pay for it... I switched from Photobucket to Fotki for that exact reason. I've been trying to cut corners on my monthly expenses since I'm on a fixed, monthly S.S. income, but EVERYTHING is costing more these days...... My water, electric and School Tax bills went up. I dropped my lawn service company because they raised my rate by 50% and I dropped TruGreen's fertilizing/weed killing service. My neighbor's son now takes care of my lawns for less than half of what I was paying for everything. (I don't get around very easily since I had my stroke, and I don't own a lawn mower since we moved here from NY. I can't afford to buy a sit-down lawn mower or I'd be doing it myself.) Unfortunately we just have to accept that things are going to cost more as time goes on, and that nothing is free for very long, if at all.

Great job Randy and excellent BMF work too.

Hope you have a great day Tom. No age listed... You're either way too old, or still a kid ... Actually we're all still kids... BIG kids at heart anyway.

I'm a happy camper... My order from ModelRoundup was delivered... I got the new Galaxie '48 Chevy Woodie Fleetline, the new Galaxie '48 Chevy Coupe, and the new Revell '29 Ford Roadster. They're added to the "pile" as I'm currently working on a couple of projects.

I'm one of those people who occasionally uses flocking on package trays. I recently tried embossing powder and it looks OK. I've also used flat or dullcoated paints

That's looking really sharp Al...... Did that tube grille come in the kit?

Decals before or after finishing polish?
Ramfins59 replied to wayne swayze's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Are you putting a finish clearcoat over the decals? If so, that would help to protect the decals when polishing. If not, then I would polish first and then apply the decals. -
Poor old worn down Caddy...... Great job of weathering both inside and out Eric.

Very nice Douglas, I like the colors and the connie kit.

Great work Tommy.

That looks great Douglas. Mine is on the way from ModelRoundup along with the '48 Chevy Woodie and the new '29 Ford Hiboy.

Hubley also did a Nash Metropolitan. One recently sold on EBAY for crazy money.

Getting back into it after a 15 year break.

That looks great Virgil. I'm waiting for my order to arrive from Model Roundup with this kit and the 2 '48 Chevy kits from Galaxie. I've got plans for this '29 Roadster kit.

I've been expanding my 1950's car collection by using redone promos, diecast kits or diecasts. I've found all of these cars either on EBAY or at vendor tables at model shows, all at very good prices. 1955 Oldsmobile http://images43.fotki.com/v329/photos/9/3018309/12461206/55oldsmobilefinished1-vi.jpg 1956 Oldsmobile http://images107.fotki.com/v159/photos/9/3018309/12461271/56OLDSMOBILEFINISHED21024x755-vi.jpg 1955 Pontiac http://images53.fotki.com/v1502/photos/9/3018309/13384669/NTIACDIECASTMODELFRONT1024x751-vi.jpg 1956 Pontiac http://images107.fotki.com/v780/photos/9/3018309/12461295/56PONTIACFINISHED11024x740-vi.jpg 1957 Pontiac http://images34.fotki.com/v1623/photos/9/3018309/13026524/1957PONTIACMODEL21024x712-vi.jpg 1955 Buick http://images60.fotki.com/v1548/photos/9/3018309/12967523/1955BUICKFINISHED21024x713-vi.jpg 1956 Buick http://images61.fotki.com/v665/photos/9/3018309/13006617/1956BUICKMODELFINISHED1-vi.jpg
