Photoshopped models
Modelbuilder Mark replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I can barely find the time I would like to build, let alone learn a trunk load of photoshop tricks. I do want to get better at taking nice pictures with good lighting in my little portable photo booth, but only when time permits. I would like to have some of the pictures I take LOOK more like the color really is, right there in the room as I view it, but again, I do not have the great editing skills etc that it takes. I do not know why someone would intentionally try to make you think the mode they are posting is anything other than it is. Light/dark. intensity etc, do not care, I do not want you to see the model the way I wish it were, I want you to see it the way I see it. That is my goal. But again, most of the time you just a quick shot from the bench, because my time building is too precious. -

How do you prep tire sidewalls?
Modelbuilder Mark replied to Speedfreak's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I know folks that use a toothbrush, and baking soda. After I sand the tread, I usually either use dull coat if it is a street care/work truck etc. If it is supposed to be a show rod or custom, I may even leave the sidewalls somewhate shiney to replicate tires that have had tire shine applied. -

Your craftmanship is outstanding. I hope you bring this to Phoenix in the spring. -

That is exactly what I was going to say. I get so cheesed when the other person does something wrong, then flips me the bird.

Automotive Themed rooms
Modelbuilder Mark replied to Modelbuilder Mark's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is more of an automotive storage unit. But heck yea, I would say done right, it would be automotive themed. Such as this and then maybe off to the side, the restrooms Just somehow do not think the wife will ever go for it tho... -

Clear-Before or after ?
Modelbuilder Mark replied to dartman's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I know a couple people here on the forum that chrome the script before they even paint, then use very fine q-tips,l like those from tamyia, with thinner to remove the paint from the scripts, looks very realistic. But even they wait to do the main foil until after the paint has gased out and been buffed out. Take a look at some of Steven Guthmiller's work, and you will see what I mean. Just look for some of his posts. -
Trust me here Ron, Steve knows his paint jobs! Find some of his posts on here, great stuff. There are a few companies that do what MCW does, like Scalefinishes, but some people even use nail polish for custom jobs, or decant paints from spray bombs etc. By all means, do not limit yourself to model company enamels. There is some good stuff there too, as they also have their own line of lacquer paints, but again, despite them being made for models, I would still primer. Just do not try to lay on real thick coats of primer., The best easy to use primer for me, is the grey and white primers from Tamiya. They are not cheap, but again use the coupon at Hobby Lobby and you will get a decent deal. They can shoot straight from the can. The grey is the filler primer for filling in the scratches etc, and the white is the final primer if you will, fine surfacing. BTW, here is a listing of some of the local hobby shops near you I DO see that you have a hobby lobby not too far away.
-
Welcome! For each question you just asked, there are multiple answers here on this forum that will help. Automotive paint will depend on what you use for primer, how much you use etc. There are lots of great articles/topics here on the forum and elsewhere out there on the web. As for kits, there are still a few local hobby shops here and there, just do a directory search near you, but there is Hobby Lobby which has coupons for 40% off almost every week, and Micheal's crafts has a small selection. Some folks on the forum here will certainly act as if tho you must have lost your mind if you still shop at a mom and pop brick and mortar store, so of course there is also the online options, Emodelcars (link at the top of the forum pages), Ebay, Amazon, and many many online hobby shops that do a great job at customer service. As for the wheels etc, there is a lot of aftermarket options. Some in resin like Modelhaus, some in styrene like Pegasus wheels, and others. Al kinds of parts options, in all sorts of materials, not just wheels. By all means, check out the Modelcars magazine for source material as well. The more time you spend on this forum, the more you will learn, both about building and techniques, but also where to acquire things. On top of that, there is a wanted section here, a for trade section, and so forth. Look around, grab some kits, and start building!

Serious modeler envy
Modelbuilder Mark replied to MustangGuy23's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Over time, take it slow. Like the boy in Gran Torino when he is in the garage looking at all the tools. You just accumulate over time. I would hate to even attempt to go out and replace the tools, paints, kits and so forth that I have accumulated since I got back into model build back in 1990 -
As for the phone access... When I get home at night, I leave my phone either in my car, or on a shelf at my back door, turned off. If it is an emergency, or you know me and need me, you can call my wife's phone, or see if I am online. On weekends, I may not touch my phone at all. Througout the day, no matter where I am or what I am doing, if I do not know who it is calling, it can go to VM and I usually only answer if I know who is calling. If it is important, you will leave me a msg. Oh, I almost never have the volume on at all. My wife does not like that tho.. LOL
