Any “diet” pop (soda) worth trying out there?
Ace-Garageguy replied to Monty's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
You can always mix straight "sparkling" or carbonated water in it if you really want something fizzy. https://fitwell.recreation.ucla.edu/file/27a0358b-896a-4c8e-bab9-30b5ad4e51a9 -

Any “diet” pop (soda) worth trying out there?
Ace-Garageguy replied to Monty's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
There's ongoing research that looks like excessive or long-term use of any artificial sweeteners may have negative health effects. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/artificial-sweeteners/art-20046936 If you can get in the habit of making a whole-fruit smoothie in a blender, or eating a handful of blueberries or strawberries or just about any fresh fruit instead of drinking a soda, you'll be doing yourself a big favor. Fruit, though naturally sweet, is low in calories and is full of stuff that's actually good for you. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324431 Unfortunately, most commercially processed "fruit juice" is not a good alternative, as it's usually sweetened and stripped of most everything beneficial, like fiber, and is just empty calories. -

COMCAST / XFINITY SCAM with a NEW TWIST
Ace-Garageguy replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I don't know. IT is not my area of expertise. However, after running the most current Windows and Chrome updates, the real site comes up every time now, not the spoofed one. EDIT: There are several online references to "www.pay-box.in", the origin of the supposed Xfinity email, and it quite obviously has absolutely nothing nada zip zero to do with Xfinity / Comcast...other than being in India, where Xfinity has most of its customer service people. There are some pretty sophisticated hackers all over the planet these days, so who knows. -
Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker.

Oh yeah. That's nice.

FAKE EMAILS supposedly from Comcast / Xfinity going out to "account recovery" emails saying "Your automatic payment was declined bla bla bla" And "your service will be interrupted", but they say "we will temporarily Turned off our service." Anybody see anything wrong with that? Then there's the originating email sender: www.pay-box.in Of course there's the standard "click here, idiot" button to "update your account" that takes you to a spoofed site where they steal your debit card or bank account info. Well see fellers, I don't do autopay. So that's another red flag. And of course I'd never click the moron button. BUT...the new twist is that if you try to go directly to Xfinity from the same browser, they've got some kind of redirect set up that makes the site seem to be inoperative, to try to scare you into going back and clicking the moron button. DON'T DO IT. I used another browser on a different ISP to access the real site and there's no problem. Obviously somebody has hacked Xfinity and has all the "account recovery" emails, so BEWARE.

Underwhelmed by another Ollie's "score"...the Polar Lights repop of the old Aurora Undertaker dragster kit. I should have looked up some online builds, but I got suckered by the low price and the box art. I should have known better. It looked like at least the front-blown Chrysler 392 and some other parts would be worth the price, but on opening the kit, it looks like the 392 is underscale, the front blower setup seems to be way underscale, and there's not much of anything else I can really use other than possibly the old-school whitewall narrow slicks, rear wheels, and some chassis stuff. The upside is that the intake manifold for the front-blown 392 and possibly the up-pipes from the blower, and maybe the front cover/blower drive, might make a starting point to convert a scale-correct 392 to a front-blown (Potvin?) configuration for something else. Oh well. At least it was cheap. I also picked up a Monogram 1/24 Nomad, just because I'd never had one. I knew exactly what to expect though, because it's just a Nomad body on the old 1/24 Bel Air kit, with sorta Centerline wheels and no-name fat tires. Pretty funny, it looks like people are buying these at Ollies and listing them on feePay for 2 or 3 times what they paid. I'd intended to do a gasser with the Bel Air kit, as the front bumper looks too heavy to me, but removing it for a gasser eliminates that problem. So the Nomad will probably get gasserized too, something like this, but not as silly nosebleed-high. I DO like the illustration though.

There was some interest here last week in old aftermarket hot-rod and 12-port heads for the big old GMC sixes (and similar equipment for the smaller Chevy inlines) from years past, and it kindled my interest as to what's still available info-wise on the web. Information is getting more and more difficult to come by on a lot of old stuff that's "no longer relevant", so I did a search for some primary source material. One of the best things I came up with was this, a NOS 1995 reprint of the 1954 original...and for a fraction of the current asking price all over the interdwerbs.

Can someone give me a painting tip, please?
Ace-Garageguy replied to dazzed's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Oh boy...all this advice. Looks to me like your passes shooting the color or the clear simply didn't overlap sufficiently there in the middle, so there wasn't enough paint to wet out and flow. Try cleaning the panel with 70% isopropyl to get any contaminants from the polish off it, scuff the whole panel, and shoot a couple more coats of clear...paying extra attention to getting good overlap at the edges of each pass with the airbrush. Then colorsand and polish again. That should take care of it. OR, if you feel like living dangerously, try sanding the peel more aggressively with something like 600 wet. If you don't go through the clear, sand up to 3000 or so and polish it. If you do go through the clear, or even all the way to primer, just scuff the whole panel, clean it with iso, and shoot it again. EDIT: Just for credibility, this is what my paint consistently looks like. -
Feet and inches are more of those concepts that are unfamiliar to most of a generation.
