I am ready for 2k
Ace-Garageguy replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually, it's not a "closed system". A closed system would have no air intakes through the filters on the front. It would be a rebreather, essentially. You need to be very careful and verify that those filters are rated for isocyanates. That's the BAD part of 2K, and it can kill you if you're sensitive to it. "Isocyanate sensitivity, or allergy, can occur in some workers who are exposed to isocyanates. This can lead to severe asthma attacks, and in some cases, death from hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a lung reaction." A mask like that would be better with a constant clean air supply. I have one that I use in the big-car booth that runs specially filtered air from the compressor through a waist-worn cooler and into the mask. Because it runs at positive pressure relative to the booth or surroundings, no vapor or smell can get in it. None, zero, period. -

Thank you both very much. I'd say we have a definitive answer at this point. -
What's with the U.S.Post office these days?
Ace-Garageguy replied to styromaniac's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
The very helpful and competent supervisor at the PO was able to find the shipment before it got sent back...in spite of their computer screens all showing the onscreen "please wait" spiral-of-doom the whole time I was there...and I'm back home. Unfortunately, there's a hole in the box that looks like the prong of a forklift went through it, and an ominous rattle. Now I have to check the contents, file a claim if necessary, and order a replacement depending on what I find. Not exactly how I'd planned my morning, and of course, as I don't get a salary for dealing with stuff like this, I'm a little miffed. I've already lost an hour and a half of time that would have been billable had I not had to fix the result of incompetence beyond my control...and we're not done yet. -

1962 Corvair Monza GT concept by Entex 1:25 scale
Ace-Garageguy replied to ea0863's topic in Model Cars
Nice job, nice mods. I bought one of these, but never really looked at it closely. I didn't realize the general lines and proportions of the body were as good as yours seem to be. I'll have to take a better look. -
Done there, been that...or something.

Missed, missed, knocked it outta the park.

That's interesting. I bet it's killer in person.

What's with the U.S.Post office these days?
Ace-Garageguy replied to styromaniac's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
The local PO seems to have some recent hires who aren't familiar with either numbers or English. There is a small car-lot at the end of the street that's gone up for lease in the last couple days, but it's not my number, naturally. Otherwise, I don't know. I've given up trying to figure out how the brain-dead do what they do...or why they're employed by a gubmint agency. It's less frustrating and more productive to just deal with the aftermath. I will be very glad when I'm no longer dependent on the PO to keep my business running. 8:30 tomorrow morning should be interesting, because I'll be there when the doors open. -
Removing cast in wheel lug nuts.
Ace-Garageguy replied to Brutalform's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Lathe. Another option if the nuts are recessed in rim detail...start your drill with a pinprick in the center of the lugnut, and drill the center out. Then go to a larger bit and machine the outer material off. Magnification is your friend here. Working very carefully, it CAN be done with no damage. -

Local PO delivers packages at least three times a week to my home address. Packages that go on the front porch, where the regular driver (the one with a brain) leaves them whether I'm home or not. This AM I check tracking on one, it says "out for delivery", so I expect to see it when I roll in after work. Stayed in the shop late, got home just before dusk, no package. Go inside, fire up the computer , check tracking, I get this idiocy: Alert Vacant MXXXXXXX, GA XXXXX May 17, 2024, 5:01 pm Latest Update Your item was returned to the sender on May 17, 2024 at 5:01 pm in MXXXXXXX, GA XXXXX because the address was vacant or the business was no longer operating at the location and no further information was available. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THANK YOU SALARIED MORON. NOW INSTEAD OF GETTING AN EARLY START ON MY OWN WORK SATURDAY MORNING, I HAVE TO GO TO THE PO AND DO YOUR JOB. YOU COULD HAVE CALLED YOUR SUPERVISOR TO SEE IF ANY RECENT DELIVERIES HAD BEEN MADE AT THIS ADDRESS. BUT THAT WOULD HAVE REQUIRED THOUGHT AND INITIATIVE AND RESPONSIBILITY. BY THE WAY, THIS PLACE DOESN'T LOOK VACANT BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION. MORON. -
"Scale" is a concept one might think would be universally understood by modelers everywhere, but it ain't.

What Did You Get Today? (Not Model Related)
Ace-Garageguy replied to LOBBS's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Enough Dynamat-like foil-backed heat barrier to cover the firewall and tunnel in the '66 Chevelle before I put the dash and console back in for the second-to-last time... A few feet of chicken teeth to grommet the AC, heater hose, and wiring harness pass-through holes... and 10 yards of 7781-50 F16 glass cloth to layup the custom airbox and filter can shells. -

Real '53 Ford pickup primer color?
Ace-Garageguy replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks Mark. Much appreciated. -
I know some of youse guys restore real vehicles that I haven't. Does anybody know the actual factory primer color for a '53 Ford pickup? I assume standard red-oxide or black, maybe gray, but I'd like to get it right. EDIT: I found this on Ford Barn. Anybody say different? "Did auto-body repair until 1961 (when I left the business ) Until that time Ford used red-oxide primer on all exterior body panels regardless of finish color."
