1/25 Revell '70 Plymouth HEMI 'Cuda 2'n1
gtx6970 replied to MachinistMark's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I grew up in a time when $5 for a kit was expensive, when I first started my kits were under $1 and IMO, to see it today when the average kit price is $20 more or less (usually more ) I personally have a hard time with it. Thats why I usually/lately have been buying 2nd hand . Actually I think the last time I bought a new release off a store shelf was when the Polar lights funnycars came out or possibily the AMT 71 Duster was 1st released. Actually 90% of what I have been buying in the past few years are kits I can't buy off any store shelves. That said when this Cuda arrives I'll kringe but will buy a few, how many will depend on how much. Mainly because its near the top of my want list. same with the 71 Demon kit when it shows up. And I don't need kits with a bunch of photoetch stuff in it or one thats 1000% dead nuts on to make me happy with it. And yes I am a scale snob or I might be happy with converting a monogram 71 So yes what I see so far is IMO good enough and I'll work with it . And I'll bet I am of the majority -
I don't really understand all the hullabaloo over this kit. It's nothing but a decal and box art change from any one of the earlier 64 Plymouth kits is it not ? IMO, if they want to really make a splash with it , tool it to reflect a sedan body

I went thru my parts bins and found one side of what I think your after,,,,,,,, no idea where or when I got it or what it's out of. If you want it, pm me an address and it's yours , maybe you can use it to make a resin copy of it to get both sides

German car builder for a 1st timer
gtx6970 replied to gtx6970's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
She is 15 , but till now has never shown any interest in building a model kit . But I think it has more to do with her younger sister building a couple, I've built a bunch so she asked me if I had some kind of German car ( I don't ) she could do for her German class project. -
OK, My oldest daugher has decided for her German class in school she wants to build a model kit Only problem is, it has to be of a German made product car Her 1st choice is a Volkswagon Beetle, maybe a BMW or some sort ,,,,as I think these are the 2 most recognizable of the bunch This will be here very model ever so it needs to be reasonably easy because it has to be finished in time to be graded for finals in about 4 or 5 weeks

If I may, how or where do you come up with such detailed reference pictures to show how the supports were made as an example ? I have a feelign your not just ,,winging it -
Very nice, I want to do one of these kits but had heard of fit issues getting it to look right with the body down
-
Although I don't think I would call it horrible, just not 100% accurate when you compare the AMT version side by sde with an original MPC issue . If they use the original MPC body, hood and grille with everything else from the AMT Duster I would be good with that.

Out of the choices given, wheels # 1 and I agree a lighter color would make it pop.The Pearl white mentioned would be cool, or maybe a light gold.. But to be honest none of them really do it for me, then again the model isn't for me. Myself I've never be a big fan of the big wheels short sidewall tire movement. BUT, a few years back there was an early 64 or maybe 65 Valiant 2 door hardtop running around the Mopar Nats that just knocked my socks off. But it was more of a pro touring style. Nice wheels and tires that had some sidewall . But lowered just about perfect. That car was REEEEEEALY nice and I would gladly have parked it in my garage.

Trust me, I am well aware there was a Lawman in a 1964 Plymouth 2 door hardtop,,,my comment was to the fact I don't believe a Hemi 2 door hardtop ever existed as a factory built car. Every reference I have on the Lawman is the 2 door hardtop was a maxwedge car, and the 2 door sedan was a Hemi car. Max wedge cars usually have the 4 headlight grille, and the double lump hood scoop. Hemi cars were 2 headlight grille and a wider and longer but almost smooth top hood scoop

The Polyglas tire sets , are they all F60's or all L60's or a mixture of each ? 8 to a a pkg I assume ? And I assume the pad printed blue stripe slicks are only going to be packaged as a set of 2 slicks 2 ft tires and wheels ? I for one would MUCH rather have 8 pack sets of the slicks similar to the current sets ,,,, I have very little use the gasser wheels -
As far as I know of, ALL RO series ( aka - race hemi packaged cars ) 1964 were 2 door sedans I only know of one Race hemi 2 door hardtop ( and its a nascar hemi pkg) it's a 2 door Dodge hardtop ( green car )

Got it today. and it's still sealed inside. Looking at it I REALLY like it and it may coem to the ft of line asap. Tires themselves seem kind of rubbery though , not sure what my options are to get a similar size and shape for this car. I don't have anything in the parts box that even comes close

gtx6970 replied to tabsscale1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)

I think it depends on the seller at a show, some are simply extensions of a concrete store ft, some are extensions of an internet only base business, they tend to sell pretty close to retail and less likely to wheel and deal. As opposed to the joe schmoe seller is simply trying to make a few bucks to support his hobby and may be more willing to negotiate price. I have one LHS and his model kit stock is somewhat limited ( mainly R/C stuff ) if he has it I can usually buy it cheaper online and pay shipping versus buying local, pay sales tax and pay fuel prices to go get it . A LHS his competition may be a half hour / several miles away. Plus he has that ' instant gratification ' feeling going for him . Where as an internet business,(ebay as an example ) his competition is just a mouse click away so prices tend to be a bit lower

I totally agree , my point I was trying to convey was not everyone strives to acheive 1000% dead nuts accuracy. ( me included) my point was and I may be way off base here is, but I think most builders start a project with an image in there head. If the finished product reflects that image,,, they are and very much should be ,,,,, happy with it, ( myself included ) even if a judge dis-agrees . If someone looks in my case and THEY see what I had in my minds eye, I acheived my goal and i'm happy with that result. Don't get me wrong I look at some of the builds that are and have been shown here that are off the charts. Especially some of the all scratchbuilts being completed. I simply don't have the time, inclination (aka mostly desire +/or talent) to pull off something similar to them.
-
Interesting thread, some excellant view points being made and I agree with 99% of it But I think it comes back the old adage - "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" . ( aka the builder ) If said builder IS happy with His ( or hers) finished product,,,. and thats all that matters . If a model show judge thinks it's inaccurate , thats there opinion and they are entitled to it and should add or deduct points based on there knowledge of the subject. . And ONLY if they are knowledgable of said subject. If said judge is guessing then IMO should rely on the one who built said replica that it IS accurate. Either way and in the end it comes to opinions, one person can look at the Mona Lisa and think it's the ugliest thing on the planet, someone else may think it's the gods gift to the world. PS, Love the Alfa btw

Wheel/Tire Combo & Stance
gtx6970 replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Very much so, I'll work for hours to get the stance I am after . especially on vintage funnycar. IMO they just don't look right with the entire tire visible . I try to get the body/ wheel opening down to right at the top edge of rim at least same thing for ealy 60's superstock cars, a lot of them had a nose high look to them sitting still -
Agreed, a few years ago a mint unbuilt MPC 1968 Color Me Gone Charger funnycar kit sold for nearly $1000, over the next few weeks several more came out of the woodwork and sold anywhere from $300 to $800 . Prior to that 1st one you rarely ever saw this kit unbuilt The one who determines Ebay sold prices is the 1st looser. I've won seveal kits lately and I would have paid considerably more than my winning bid, thankfully the 2nd highest bidder wasn't.

same here, mine was the SD421 with slixx decals, and i agree 100% the 3 tone interior was " lots of fun " Thankfully my next one is an all red interior Keep it up btw
