Johnt671 Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 I bought this car while I was still in high school. I had already enlisted in the Marine Corps, so this was going to be my last summer fling car before I shipped out. I planned to put it away until I got a permanent duty post, but the Corps sent me to Viet Nam. being gone for that long changed my plans. I think I paid $150 for it. It had a 283 two barrel, and a two speed auto, but it was a lot of fun.. I got it in the winter and couldn't wait to put the top down so I drove it around with the windows up, top down and the heater on full blast. The 1/1, The model.
StevenGuthmiller Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 That's very pretty! I like the dog dish caps! I used to hate those things but they're beginning to grow on me. Nice work! Steve
gtx6970 Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 Looks good. My personal favorite year Impala body styles So, what ever happend to the 1/1 ? My mother inlaw used to have a white with red inter 61 Impala conv. They sold it when my wifes younger sister was born
Bob Ellis Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 I always like a model built after a 1:1 that has a personal story. Nice work.
crazyjim Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 Very nicely done, John. Semper Fi and Welcome Home, brother.
Johnt671 Posted March 20, 2015 Author Posted March 20, 2015 GTX6970, I had hoped to be stationed in the states at least for a while, and be able to bring the car on post, After boot camp I got ordered to Viet Nam which would mean the car would have to sit for about two years. It would have sat in my folks driveway, and that was too long, so I sold it. In December I did find a nice convertible so I snatched it up. Can't wait for the nice weather. This is my first convert since the 61. crazyjim, Semper Fi to you and thanks. Stephen, they are baby moon hubcaps, which with the whitewalls, was a hot setup for the day. Those of us that couldn't afford nice wheels ofter went that way. Thanks for the complements.
crazyjim Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 Too bad you're in PA, John. We're having the Inverness (FLA) Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Parade on May 2, 2015. Also bringing in The Wall for the weekend. Any and every Vietnam Veteran out there is welcome to attend.
hedotwo Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Excellent! I love builds of folk's 1:1's and the stories behind them...
Johnt671 Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 Thanks for the invite crazyjim. We're going to Fl just after Memorial Day for a few weeks. My sister has a place in Fort Meyers Beach. Can't wait to get warm again. Semper Fi to you BubbaBrown. Thanks for all the nice replies. I was going to follow this post up with picture of a 66 Impala SS 396 4 speed that I bought when I came back to the world. but the model slipped out of mt hands when I picked the 61 up and fell on the floor. Not to much damage, but I have to fix it up again.
darthsideous Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Looks great! I also like the fact that it was built based on a 1:1 that had some history
Stray Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 nice trip down memory lane for you everytime you look at your shelf! Love the build bud, looks clean and true.
59-Desoto Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Looks really good, 1:1 builds are always the best in my book
