Draggon Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 I've been reading about the VW emissions fiasco. While we may not yet have muffler bearings, we do in fact have muffler fluid. Will wonders never cease.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_exhaust_fluid
BIGTRUCK Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 That DEF runs on our entire fleet, causes big problems on super cold days, trucks drop like flies.
Chuck Most Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Yeah, that stuff's been around for 7 or 8 years now...
Joe Handley Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Lol, I was wondering how that title sounded with a German Accent, or maybe while being screamed by their one time Chancelor that kinda helped VW get their start.

unclescott58 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 After spending a summer working in a auto parts store, and seeing all specialty items and high prices for parts, especially with Volkswagens. I would never own one. I found it interesting that most of the guys who work at the auto parts store I worked at, drove GM products. Mainly Chevys.By the way, I had a great time working in the store for the summer. I've now gone back to my regular job in the education field. But, they were please enough with me, to ask that I stay on the books by working for them one day a month during the school year. And come back and work for them next summer. It's a great job. And I loved it. I will do as they requested. But, I love my normal job working with kids even more.

After watching so many of my friends have problems with VWs, you'd have a tough time selling me one. That said, the raging libertarian in me LOVES the idea of getting a TDI Jetta/Golf wagon to subtlety flip the bird to the gub'mint. Charlie Larkin
Joe Handley Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 actually, there are muffler bearings.I believe they're also for VW too, not sure who would be so stupid to think that a flex joint gasket/seal should be called that though.
Joe Handley Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 After watching so many of my friends have problems with VWs, you'd have a tough time selling me one. That said, the raging libertarian in me LOVES the idea of getting a TDI Jetta/Golf wagon to subtlety flip the bird to the gub'mint. Charlie Larkin The Feds have made VW pull all fraudulently built new and used diesel cars off their sales lots since they no longer conform to US Emissions Standards, not sure if non-VW owned used lots have to do the same. If VW does "fix" these cars, power and mileage will likely suffer, as will resale value. With any luck, they will be fined severely, then probably find themselves on the wrong end of many, many lawsuits from their now quite angry customers who now have cars that are lower in value, as well will be suffering from lower mileage and performance if the computers are reflashed to eliminate that cheat code and make the emissions system work like it should be! Don't feel one bit sorry for VW itself, although I do feel bad for their dealers and salesmen, they have to deal with the buying public that either won't be told that they can't get a diesel because the cars are no longer legal for sale in the US, people who like to be jerks and give the dealership staff carp about VW's criminal activity here, and any local news agencies that smell blood and have to run off to these dealerships to see how they are handling the situations as they happen, all while having these 4 wheeled NoX factories taking up useable space on the lot as well as having to pay for the debt they incurred aquiring them that still need paying.
ZTony8 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 If I owned one of the involved cars I'd never bring it in for it's "fix".
Joe Handley Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 If I owned one of the involved cars I'd never bring it in for it's "fix".Depending on how any recall related to this is handled, if you want to register the affected vehicle, you may have no choice! If they treat this like some states treat recalls and emissions testing, you can not renew your cars plates until the recalls are done on your vehicle or if you haven't had the emissions testing done. Sounds like the IRS might be looking more closely at VW now too, the owners of those cars ended up with $51m in ill gotten tax breaks too!
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Kinda makes a man pine for the old days. Simple, rugged, efficient cars, and clever advertising with no need to lie about anything.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 And as far as the DEF issue goes, some of GM's early turbocharged cars were equipped with a water-injection system, needed to protect against destructive detonation while under boost. Many of the engines in these vehicles were destroyed by people simply not bothering to read the manual or ever fill the water tank. Unless the DEF system has a fluid-level monitor that disables the engine when the tank is empty, it's a useless, pointless system anyway (unless the vehicles employing it are all maintained correctly...yeah, right).
1972coronet Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Perhaps the best thing about D.E.F. (which is synthesised cow urine) is its containers ! Lots of landfill waste is created by the stupid boxes / containers for that non-sense , which , in my mind , negates its short term emissions "benefits" ...
Joe Handley Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Guess you've never heard of recycling then, no reason a dealership can't have a dumpster specifically for cardboard or there be something to recycle all the plastic containers used for various fluids.
Deano Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Guess you've never heard of recycling then, no reason a dealership can't have a dumpster specifically for cardboard or there be something to recycle all the plastic containers used for various fluids.Ah, but what a dealership (or anyone, for that matter) CAN do and what they DO are not always the same thing.
Joe Handley Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 It's not hard for cardboard, we've always had a dumpster set aside for just cardboard at my HTU, I wouldn't be surprised if dealers are regulated on their disposal methods for containers that carry automotive fluids either.
