Roadrunner Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 In the past, I have had an annual tradition of gifting myself with a Christmas gift (or two). This goes so far as to my wrapping said gift(s), so that I can then unwrap them during our family celebration, usually Christmas eve or day.Does anyone see this practice as being too weird, or do you yourself ever do something similar? I see many, many folks on various forums exclaim that they bought this or that as a Christmas gift for themselves, but do you go so far as to actually wrap it?
Ramfins59 Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 I buy models and related stuff for myself for Christmas but I don't usually wrap them. My family is always telling me that I'm really hard to buy gifts for......... DUH...... Buy me model stuff...!!! 2 months ago I sent my older daughter an email saying; "In case you're doing advanced planning for buying Christmas gifts, here's a Link to a company selling acrylic model display cases (with a picture of the one I want.)" I know I'll be unwrapping it on Christmas morning when we visit my daughter in VA.
DeeCee Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 I enjoy the family side of Christmas, but the buying everybody small insignificant gifts for the sake of tradition reallyp's me off, everybody ends up with something they did not want or need, so I tell the non immediate family members "Don't buy me anything" there for I don't buy them anything, but I do buy myself a few models instead, but I don't go to the trouble of wrapping them though.
426-Hemi Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 I have to say, I buy something I want or need tool wise at times, and say "A gift by me, for me" but....I don't wrap it, I merely just say it and thats that!I have a mile long list for everyone else, (UNLESS they want the low down on a tool list, my step-son is a good one for the tool list he knows enough what hes lookin' at) so. I taught him well! The boy has a garage fulla Snap-On tools RIGHT now and hes only 21!Anyway, thats what I do. I do a bit of trading parts and stuff around Christmas, those all I got out of the trade are gifts for me for Christmas..... -I don't wrap them tho!
Tom Geiger Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 (edited) I'm not a present kinda person. When I see something I need, I buy it. I'm fairly seasoned in my hobbies, so I hate when some well meaning relative or friend tries to buy me some hobby item I don't need at full retail. I tell my family not to buy me anything. I don't need anything! I especially don't want my kids to spend their hard earned money on me! Last year my dog Ted died in November so I was still feeling the pain at Christmas time. My daughters handed me a wrapped gift and I scolded them that I didn't need presents. They confidently said that I'd like this. What I unwrapped was the mug pictured here. They had a coffee mug made for me with my Ted on it! It has my favorite photos of Ted all the way around it. Not ashamed to say I cried! Edited December 21, 2015 by Tom Geiger
peter31a Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 We sort of do that. We both have our own hobbies. When we go to related events and buy stuff especially during the latter half of the year we bring it home and hand it over to the other person to be wrapped and put under the tree. Since my birthday is within a month of Christmas I never know what I will receive for which occasion. And being somewhat forgetful I always get a surprise or two. "Oh! I forgot about that one." Kinda silly I suppose but it works for us.

So I have a simple solution that works great. The only thing on my gift list is "Consumables." That means a gift I can enjoy then it goes away (and I don't have to figure out what to do with it). They decide what consumables means, so what I get for Christmas are the best home-made cookies I ever ate from an in-law, tickets to events I love, and gift cards to restaurants they know I like. Everybody's happy. Edited December 21, 2015 by Lunajammer
vintagercr Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 I have always bought myself a Christmas gift or two.
Mr Stock Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Not that I ever need an excuse to buy myself a kit lol........ but I do generally buy one kit for myself for Christmas which I import over from the US, I don't go so far as wrapping it and I generally keep it quiet from my girlfriend as I'd get a right telling off for buying so close to Christmas !This year my present to myself is the Moebius 56 Chrysler I'm also hoping my girlfriend has got me a kit too ?
Belugawrx Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Yep , just picked up a new airbrush for myselfIwata neo,.. I let myself unwrap it early..
mikemodeler Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Don't wrap em, I usually have to sneak them in and pretend they were there all year!I have asked for gift cards to Hobby Lobby or Michaels, have yet to get one as the family thinks I have enough stuff already! My wife is very understanding of the hobby, she knows there could worse ones that cost a lot more. I have sold off quite a few models this year, she is happy that I have reduced the stash and used the money for things necessary to the household. When I was young teen, I would get models for Christmas and with my birthday just three days after, I would get them for my birthday too. Usually got more on my birthday as stores would mark them down after Christmas.
cobraman Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 I don't do it. I buy what I want/need when I want. My wife and daughter have me dialed in and always get me some nice things. That's not to say I don't buy myself something around Christmas I just don't consider it a Christmas gift to myself.
Rob Hall Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 (edited) I have in the past on a couple of occasions, bought gifts for myself and wrapped them and put cards to myself from myself on them (these were at times when I had holiday get togethers w/ family). Kind of did it as a joke... I get 'gifts' for myself all the time, so not really anymore... Edited December 22, 2015 by Rob Hall
martinfan5 Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Thats a good idea, I think I will say the six new NASCAR kits I ordered today are Christmas gifts to myself, just not gonna wrap them.
Roadrunner Posted December 22, 2015 Author Posted December 22, 2015 Thats a good idea, I think I will say the six new NASCAR kits I ordered today are Christmas gifts to myself, just not gonna wrap them. The general consensus seems to be (I posted this question elsewhere too), is that it's a perfectly acceptable practice, which I'm very glad to hear, not that I intend to stop doing it, regardless.
High octane Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Yes, I often buy myself something around this time of the year and call it a Christmas gift to myself. While I do a fairly good job of gift wrapping, I don't wrap presents to myself as I feel it's a waste of my time and material. Just today I stopped at my LHS and bought some things for my grandson's Lionel train set. Really, he's only 2 years old? I currently have the train around our Christmas tree, but when the tree comes down I will expand the track by 'bout 40 sections and include a tunnel and a station platform also. He'll get a kick out of that for sure. Since I don't want any more model car kits at this time, I guess the train stuff is my Christmas gift. It works for me.
Rob Hall Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 I do have a shipment of six kits from Hobby Link Japan coming this week and the 4 seasons of 'The Sweeney' on DVD coming from Amazon, both Xmas gifts to me from me..
1930fordpickup Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 I do buy myself gifts, just do not wrap them.
Roadrunner Posted December 22, 2015 Author Posted December 22, 2015 I think that with me, it's the one way to make absolutely, 100% positively sure that I'll at least get a few things that I really, really want as Christmas gifts. It's the little kid in me I guess.
Harry P. Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 My mom warned me that if I gifted myself I would go blind...
Aaronw Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 I do both. I will buy an item and call it a birthday or Christmas present to myself. Most of the time that is the end of it, but sometimes I'll give it to my wife who will then wrap it and it becomes a present from her or one of the children. Much depends on whether or not they have other gifts for me. I'm not a particularly easy person to buy for, some years they find something they think I will like other years I basically pick something out for them to give me. Often a little of both.My wife is the same way, so sometimes I'm the one who wraps something she bought for herself.
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 My mom warned me that if I gifted myself I would go blind... Jeez...and I thought I was just getting old...
Danno Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 My mom warned me that if I gifted myself I would go blind... And there, right there, is the moment at which the entire topic veered wildly off course into the weeds. I just hope a moderator doesn't see what you've done there!
Agent G Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Moderator Schmoderator... So that's what you call it now? G
